In Brief
What are the best summer beach vacations?
The best summer beach vacations in the US are Destin and 30A on the Florida Panhandle for warm, clear Gulf water, Hilton Head Island for an easy family week built around bikes and wide flat sand, and Cape May for a lifeguarded Victorian beach town on the East Coast. Maui is the warm-water splurge, Gulf Shores and Ocean City, Maryland are the cheap summer beach vacations, and Martha's Vineyard is the New England island classic. Abroad, the Algarve and Menorca are both at their best in high summer, without the hurricane-season question that hangs over the Caribbean.
Key takeaways
- Warmest water: Destin, 30A and Gulf Shores, where the Gulf sits near 29°C by late July.
- Most kid friendly: Hilton Head, Cape May and Ocean City, all with guarded beaches and walkable food.
- Cheapest weeks: Gulf Shores and Ocean City, Maryland, both drive-to and both with free public beaches.
- Late June and the last two weeks of August give peak-summer water with fewer people than mid-July.
Summer 2027 beach calendar: the dates that move prices
US beach towns price summer around three holiday weekends and the school calendar, and Europe's coasts fill around their own August holiday. These are the 2027 dates worth knowing before you choose a week.
| Window | Dates | What it means for price |
|---|---|---|
| Memorial Day weekend | 29 - 31 May 2027 | The unofficial start of summer. Most US lifeguard seasons begin around this weekend, and beach towns fill for three days before going quiet again until school is out. |
| Early summer | 1 - 25 June 2027 | The value window for families with an early school finish. Water on the Gulf and in the Southeast is already warm, while New England and California are still cool. |
| Fourth of July | 3 - 5 July 2027 | The Fourth falls on a Sunday in 2027, so the federal holiday is observed on Monday 5 July and the long weekend is the busiest and most expensive of the summer at nearly every US beach. |
| Peak summer | 6 July - 22 August 2027 | Warmest water everywhere on this list and the highest rates. In Europe, August is the main holiday month for Spanish and Portuguese families, so the Algarve and Menorca are at their fullest. |
| Late summer | 23 August - 6 September 2027 | Many US schools are back, rates start to soften and the water is at its warmest of the year in the north. Labor Day is Monday 6 September 2027, which closes the season for most beach patrols. |
Holiday dates are fixed by the calendar. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the most activity from mid-August to mid-October, which matters for the Gulf and Southeast picks. School and lifeguard dates vary by district and town, so check the local schedule for your week.

Destin & 30AUSA
$$ · Mid-rangeWarm, clear Gulf water over white quartz sand
This stretch of the Florida Panhandle is the strongest all-round summer beach vacation in the US: the Gulf is near 29°C by late July, the quartz sand stays white and cool underfoot, and on calm days the water turns the clear green that gave the Emerald Coast its name. Destin brings the harbor, the boats and sandbar days at Crab Island, while the small towns along Scenic Highway 30A, such as Seaside and Rosemary Beach, add bike paths and walkable squares that suit families. The honest drawback is rip currents: double red flags close the water entirely, Walton County fines swimmers who go in anyway, and the flag needs checking every single morning.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs near 32°C, Gulf around 29°C - calm mornings, storms some afternoons.
Where to stay: Destin Harbor and Holiday Isle for boats and evenings out, Miramar Beach for big condo towers at lower rates, and the 30A towns of Seaside, WaterColor and Rosemary Beach for walkable, bikeable family stays.
Do it cheap
A condo with a kitchen one row back from the Gulf in Miramar Beach or Fort Walton Beach. In Walton County much of the dry sand in front of the 30A homes is private, so if you stay off the beach, pick a place near one of the county's regional public beach accesses.
Worth paying for
A Gulf-front cottage in Seaside or Rosemary Beach, where the sand, the town square and dinner are all a walk away and the car stays parked all week.

Hilton Head IslandUSA
$$ · Mid-rangeThe family beach island built around bikes
Hilton Head is the easiest East Coast family beach vacation to get right: about 12 miles of wide, flat beach that packs hard at low tide so children can ride bikes on the sand, more than 60 miles of public pathways behind the dunes, and lifeguarded main beaches such as Coligny with restrooms and showers next to the sand. The surf is usually gentle and the big tidal range leaves warm, shallow pools at low water for small children. The drawbacks: the water is a cloudy green-brown from the Lowcountry marshes rather than clear, July and August are hot and humid with frequent afternoon storms, and the island's sea turtle rules require beachfront lights to be off at night through the nesting season.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs 31-32°C and humid, ocean around 28°C - storms most afternoons.
Where to stay: Coligny and South Forest Beach for walkable beach and restaurants, Palmetto Dunes for a central resort with a long beach, Sea Pines for quiet villas and Harbour Town, and Folly Field for value.
Do it cheap
A villa in North or South Forest Beach a block or two from the sand, with bikes rented by the week. Bluffton on the mainland is cheaper again but puts the bridge traffic into every beach day.
Worth paying for
An oceanfront villa in Palmetto Dunes or Sea Pines, where the beach, the pool and the bike paths all start at your door.

Cape MayUSA
$$$ · High-endA guarded Victorian beach town at the tip of New Jersey
Cape May is the most rewarding small beach town on the East Coast for families who want more than sand: the whole city is a National Historic Landmark district of Victorian houses, the beaches are guarded through the summer, and the promenade, the Washington Street Mall and the lighthouse are all an easy bike ride apart. Because it sits at the very tip of the state, Sunset Beach at Cape May Point faces west over Delaware Bay, so you can watch the sun set over the water, which is rare on the Atlantic coast. The honest drawbacks are cost and fees: summer rentals often run Saturday to Saturday, and everyone 12 and over needs a beach tag in season.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs around 28°C, ocean 22-24°C by August - cooler water than the South.
Where to stay: The historic district for inns and walkability, Beach Avenue for ocean views, Cape May Point for quiet and sunsets, and the Wildwoods just to the north for a big boardwalk and lower rates.
Do it cheap
Stay in Wildwood or Wildwood Crest, a short drive north, where the beaches are free and the motels are cheaper, and spend a day or two in Cape May itself.
Worth paying for
An oceanfront Victorian inn on Beach Avenue with a porch facing the Atlantic. In Cape May the porch is the product.

MauiUSA
$$$ · High-endCalm summer water on the south and west shores
Summer is Maui's calm season on the shores visitors use most: the big winter swells that hit the north coast are gone, so the west side around Kaanapali and Kapalua and the south side from Kihei to Wailea usually offer easy swimming and snorkeling, with sea turtles common over the reefs. The Kamaole beach parks in Kihei have county lifeguard towers, which makes them the obvious first beaches for young children. The drawbacks: Maui is the most expensive pick here and the longest trip for most of the US, Lahaina town is still being rebuilt after the August 2023 wildfire, and Big Beach at Makena has a heavy shorebreak that is not for small swimmers.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs 29-31°C, sea 26-27°C - dry trade-wind season on the leeward coast.
Where to stay: Kaanapali for a walkable resort beach, Kapalua and Napili for sheltered bays, Kihei for condos and value, and Wailea for polished resorts on calm crescent beaches.
Do it cheap
A Kihei condo with a kitchen across the road from the Kamaole beaches. Making breakfast and beach lunches saves more on Maui than any difference in room rate.
Worth paying for
An oceanfront room in Wailea or Kapalua on one of the calm bays, where the snorkeling starts at the resort's own beach.

The AlgarvePortugal
$$ · Mid-rangeGolden cliffs and almost no summer rain
Portugal's south coast is one of Europe's most dependable summer beach vacations: July and August are close to rainless, the ochre cliffs and sea stacks between Lagos and Albufeira give every beach a different shape, and long sandy stretches such as Praia da Falésia leave room to spread out even in August. Albufeira is the practical base, with the widest choice of family apartments and resorts and Faro airport about 40 minutes away by road. The honest drawbacks are the Atlantic, which stays around 20-22°C even in August, and the August crowds, when European school holidays fill the beaches and Albufeira's bar strip runs loud into the night.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs 28-30°C, almost no rain, sea 20-22°C - bright and breezy.
Where to stay: Albufeira Old Town for walkable beaches and restaurants, Praia da Oura for nightlife, Galé and Salgados to the west for quieter resorts, and Olhos de Água near Praia da Falésia for families.
Do it cheap
An apartment with a kitchen above the Old Town or in Areias de São João, between the Old Town and Oura. Supermarket breakfasts and a picnic on the beach take a real bite out of a week's food bill.
Worth paying for
A cliff-top resort above Praia da Falésia with its own path to the sand, booked for late June or early September when the same room costs noticeably less than in August.

Gulf Shores & Orange BeachUSA
$ · BudgetPanhandle-style sand and water at lower prices
Alabama's short coastline has the same white sand and warm Gulf water as the Florida Panhandle at noticeably lower rates, which makes it the strongest choice for cheap summer beach vacations with kids. Gulf State Park gives you a public beach, a long fishing pier and paved trails through the dunes, The Wharf in Orange Beach adds a Ferris wheel and evening entertainment, and condos with kitchens make up most of the rentals. Drawbacks: the same rip-current flag system as Florida applies, Saturday changeover days bring heavy traffic on the roads in, and this coast sits in the path of Gulf hurricanes.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs around 32°C, Gulf near 29°C - humid, with afternoon storms.
Where to stay: Gulf Shores near the public beach for walkable food and the park, Orange Beach for larger condos and The Wharf, and Fort Morgan at the western end for quiet beach houses.
Do it cheap
A second-row condo one street back from the Gulf with a shared pool. The walk to the sand is a couple of minutes and the weekly rate drops sharply.
Worth paying for
A Gulf-front high-rise condo in Orange Beach with a balcony over the water, which is where the space and the views are.

Martha's VineyardUSA
$$$ · High-endThe New England island summer, reached by ferry
Martha's Vineyard is the classic New England summer island: gingerbread cottages and the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs, often called the oldest operating platform carousel in the US, white captains' houses in Edgartown, and the clay cliffs at Aquinnah. For families, Joseph Sylvia State Beach between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown has calmer, shallower water on the Nantucket Sound side than the surf beaches on the south shore. The drawbacks are cost and logistics: everything arrives by ferry or plane, car spaces on summer ferries go months ahead, and several of the best up-island beaches are limited to residents and renters with a town pass in summer.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs 25-27°C, water 20-22°C - August is the warmest swimming.
Where to stay: Edgartown for the polished harbor town, Oak Bluffs for families, the carousel and lively evenings, Vineyard Haven for the main ferry and a quieter base, and up-island Chilmark or West Tisbury for farms and space.
Do it cheap
Leave the car on the mainland, stay in Oak Bluffs and get around on the island buses and rented bikes. You save the car ferry fare and the parking hunt, and Oak Bluffs has the widest spread of rates.
Worth paying for
A harborfront inn in Edgartown, booked in winter for an August week. Supply on the island is small and the best rooms go first.

Ocean City, MarylandUSA
$ · BudgetThe classic boardwalk week on a free beach
Ocean City is the Mid-Atlantic's big family boardwalk town: 2.9 miles of boards from the inlet to 27th Street, rides and arcades at the south end, and about 10 miles of free beach with no tags to buy. The Ocean City Beach Patrol guards the sand from 10 am to 5:30 pm every day of the summer season, and Assateague Island, where wild horses graze behind the dunes, is a short drive south for a quieter day. The drawbacks are crowds and noise: the high-rise strip feels packed in July, and mid-June brings Senior Week, when newly graduated high-school students fill the town.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs around 29°C, ocean 22-25°C - livelier surf than the Gulf.
Where to stay: Downtown near the inlet for the boardwalk and rides, Midtown for condos and quieter blocks, and North Ocean City toward the Delaware line for high-rises and calmer evenings.
Do it cheap
A Midtown or north-end condo with a kitchen, using the town bus along Coastal Highway to reach the boardwalk. A weekly condo split between two families beats boardwalk hotel rooms by a wide margin.
Worth paying for
An oceanfront hotel on the boardwalk downtown, so children can walk from the room to the beach to the rides without getting in a car.

MenorcaSpain
$$ · Mid-rangeCalm turquoise coves for a Mediterranean summer
Menorca is the quieter, greener Balearic island and one of the best beaches for summer vacation in Europe if warm, calm water is the priority: the Mediterranean reaches about 25-26°C in August, and south-coast coves such as Cala Macarella and Cala Galdana sit in pine-backed inlets that stay sheltered on most days. The island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, which shows in the low-rise towns and the Camí de Cavalls coastal path that circles it. Drawbacks: August is peak Spanish holiday month, and in recent summers the road to Cala Macarella has been closed to private cars, with a bus from Ciutadella as the main way in.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs 29-31°C, sea 25-26°C - flat calm on the south coast most days.
Where to stay: Ciutadella in the west for the old town and the southern coves, Maó in the east for the harbor and the airport, Cala Galdana for families who want a resort beach, and Son Bou for the island's longest stretch of sand.
Do it cheap
An apartment in Ciutadella with a hire car, which puts the best southern coves within a short drive and keeps you out of resort pricing.
Worth paying for
A converted farmhouse hotel in the countryside between Ciutadella and the south-coast coves, with a pool for the hot afternoons and the beaches for the mornings.

Santa CruzUSA
$$ · Mid-rangeThe West Coast's classic boardwalk beach
Santa Cruz is the classic Northern California family beach: Main Beach is lifeguarded in summer and sits directly in front of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, California's oldest surviving amusement park, open since 1907 and still running the 1924 Giant Dipper wooden coaster. Entry to the Boardwalk is free and you pay per ride, which keeps a beach-and-rides day cheaper than a theme park. The honest drawbacks are the water, which stays around 14-16°C all summer, and the morning fog that often sits over the bay in June and July, so this is a sand, rides and tide-pool week rather than a long-swim one.
- Summer weather and water
- Summer weather and water: Highs 22-24°C, often foggy mornings, ocean 14-16°C - September is warmer.
Where to stay: Beach Hill and the Main Beach area for walking to the Boardwalk, West Cliff for ocean views and the surf at Steamer Lane, and Capitola a few miles east for a calmer village beach.
Do it cheap
A motel on the edge of downtown within walking distance of the beach, or a room in Scotts Valley a short drive over the hill, where summer rates are lower.
Worth paying for
A beachfront hotel on Beach Hill or in Capitola Village with an ocean-view balcony, which earns its price on a cool, foggy morning.

How to choose a summer beach vacation, especially with kids
Water temperature decides the trip more than air temperature
Every pick here is warm on land in July, but the water ranges from about 29°C on the Gulf to 14-16°C in Santa Cruz. If the plan is hours of swimming with children, the best summer beach vacations are on the Gulf, in the Southeast, on Maui and in the Mediterranean. New England, the Algarve and Northern California are better for walking, rides, tide pools and short dips, and Martha's Vineyard and Cape May only reach their warmest water in August.
What actually makes a beach kid friendly
Kid friendly beach vacations come down to five practical things: lifeguards on duty, a gentle slope into the water, restrooms and showers near the sand, food and ice cream within walking distance, and a short trip from the rental to the beach. Hilton Head, Cape May, Ocean City and the Kamaole beaches on Maui score on all five. The Gulf picks have the warmest water but also strong rip currents on red-flag days, so choose a guarded beach and teach children the flag colors on the first morning.
June and late August beat mid-July on both price and space
The weeks either side of the July peak deliver nearly the same weather for less money. Late June gives the Gulf and the Southeast their warm water before the biggest crowds, and the last two weeks of August give New England its warmest swimming after many schools have gone back. The exceptions to plan around: Ocean City in mid-June during Senior Week, and the Algarve and Menorca in August, when European holiday demand is at its highest.
Plan for storms and red flags, not just sunshine
The Gulf and Southeast picks sit inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which starts on 1 June and is busiest from mid-August to mid-October. Most summer weeks pass without trouble, but a refundable or flexible booking and travel insurance cost little next to a cancelled week. Daily afternoon thunderstorms are normal in Florida, Alabama and South Carolina, so plan beach time for the morning and keep afternoons flexible.
