Portugal is one of Europe's best-value, most rewarding drives - the Algarve coast, the Douro's vineyard roads, hilltop towns everywhere. Rentals are cheap and easy; the one thing that catches people out is the electronic tolls. Here's how to book smart and drive it right.

In Brief

Is it worth renting a car in Portugal?

Yes - Portugal is compact, cheap to rent in (from around $15/day) and full of coast and countryside that reward a car. The main thing to get right is tolls: many motorways use electronic-only tolls (no booths), so take the rental company's toll transponder or you risk fines. You drive on the right, manuals are the norm (book an automatic ahead), and old-town streets are narrow with tricky parking. For Lisbon and Porto themselves you don't need a car - pick one up when you head out to the Algarve, Douro or Sintra.

How much does car rental cost in Portugal?

Rough daily prices by car type. Rates rise in peak season - book early for the best deal.

Car typePrice / dayGood to know
Small manual$15-40/dayIdeal for narrow old-town streets and easy parking; cheapest option.
Compact automatic$35-70/dayThe premium if you don't drive a stick - reserve early in summer.
Compact SUV$40-80/dayMore comfort for longer drives and the Douro's winding roads.
Mid-size / estate$45-90/dayBoot space for families and beach gear along the Algarve.

Transmission: Manuals are standard and cheapest; automatics are available but book ahead in summer.

Driving in Portugal: what to know

  • Sort out the tolls before you drive

Portugal has two toll systems: manual booths on some roads, and electronic-only tolls (marked "Electronic toll only" / Via Verde) on others, including many fast routes, where there's no booth at all. Rent the car's toll transponder or register your plate so charges bill automatically - otherwise you can rack up fines.

  • Automatics book out

As across Europe, manual is the default and cheapest. If you need an automatic, reserve it well ahead in the summer season, when the limited automatic fleet sells out and prices climb.

  • Old towns are tight

Historic centres in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and hill towns have steep, narrow, one-way streets and scarce parking. Park in a garage or on the edge and walk in; some centres have restricted-access zones for residents.

  • The A-roads are fast and easy

Portugal's motorways (A-roads) are modern, quiet and quick - the drive between regions is genuinely relaxing. Keep right except to overtake, and mind the tolls as above.

  • Drive the N222 and N125

For scenery, skip the motorway: the N222 along the Douro (often called one of the world's best roads) and the coastal N125 through the Algarve are the drives worth the extra time.

  • The Algarve coast (N125)

Beach town to beach town along the sunny south - Lagos, Albufeira, Tavira and the cliffs between.

  • The Douro Valley (N222)

A famously beautiful riverside road past terraced vineyards from Peso da Régua to Pinhão.

  • Lisbon → Sintra & Cascais

Palaces in the hills and the Atlantic coast, an easy day loop from the capital.

  • The Alentejo & interior

Whitewashed hill towns, cork oaks and empty roads between Évora and the coast.
