The Best Beaches in America

America's best beaches span two oceans and four coastlines - Hawaiian reef bays, Gulf quartz sand, cold Pacific sea stacks and wild Atlantic barrier islands. These twelve are the national short list, drawn from our regional rankings, with the honest trade-offs and the months that actually work.

In Brief

What are the best beaches in America?

Siesta Key in Florida is the best beach in America - 99% quartz sand that stays cool underfoot and calm, shallow Gulf water. Lanikai and Waimanalo on Oahu have the country's best water colour, Coronado is the West Coast's best all-rounder, and Coast Guard Beach on Cape Cod is the Atlantic's wild-beauty pick.

The 12 best beaches, ranked

Ranked on sand and water quality, setting, and how much the beach rewards a full day - with the honest trade-offs stated.

  1. Siesta Key Beach

Best all-round beach in the US

    Sarasota, Florida (Gulf Coast)

The beach that tops our Florida ranking is the national winner too: sand that is 99% pure quartz, so it stays cool underfoot even in August, plus shallow, calm, clear Gulf water and free public facilities. It's no secret - expect crowds from spring break through summer - but no other US beach combines sand quality and safe swimming this well.

Best time: March–May: warm Gulf water and low humidity, before the summer afternoon-storm season.

  2. Lanikai & Waimanalo

    Water colour & sunrise kayaking

    windward Oahu, Hawaii

The turquoise-over-white-sand water colour that stands in for 'Hawaii' in most photographs, with the Mokulua islets offshore as a kayak target. Lanikai has no facilities, no lifeguards and scarce residential parking - go early - while Waimanalo, a few minutes south, trades the islet view for a longer, wider, easier beach with parkland behind it.

Best time: April–May and September–October: dry and warm outside peak crowds; windward showers pass quickly.

    Hotels near Lanikai & Waimanalo
  3. Poipu Beach

    Snorkelling & year-round swimming

    south shore of Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai's sunny-side beach: a naturally sheltered pool for small kids, reliable snorkelling off the points either side, and endangered monk seals hauling out often enough that roped-off naps on the sand are routine. Because it faces south it stays swimmable through winter, when the island's north-shore beaches turn dangerous.

Best time: Year-round; April–May and September–October combine the driest weather with the lightest crowds.

  4. Wailea Beach

    Resort comfort & calm snorkelling

    south Maui, Hawaii

The pick of Maui's dry, leeward resort coast: calm mornings with turtle-spotting snorkelling at the rocky points, and a paved shore path linking a string of equally good crescents (Ulua, Mokapu, Polo). Five-star hotels sit behind the sand, but every Hawaii beach is public by law and each one here has its own access and parking.

Best time: Mornings, any month, before the afternoon wind; December–April adds breaching humpbacks offshore.

    Hotels near Wailea Beach
  5. Coronado Beach

    Families & classic California

    San Diego, California

The West Coast all-rounder that leads our California list: a huge, flat, family-friendly strand whose fine sand glitters with mica, with the 1888 Hotel del Coronado as the backdrop and San Diego's famously mild weather. The honest note: this is the Pacific - the water peaks around 20–21°C in late summer, so most swims are short and bracing.

Best time: August–October: the warmest water and sunniest skies, after the early-summer marine layer clears.

    Hotels near Coronado Beach
  6. Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach

    Isolation & undeveloped coastline

    Outer Banks, North Carolina

The wild-Atlantic standout of our North Carolina coverage: about 16 miles of undeveloped national-seashore beach on an island reachable only by ferry or small plane, with a single village at the far end. It has topped national beach rankings, and the isolation is the point - warm-season surf, shell-strewn sand and space even in July. Rip currents are serious; swim at the lifeguarded stretch.

Best time: May–June and September–October: warm water and easy ferries, either side of peak hurricane risk.

  7. Coast Guard Beach

    New England scenery & bodysurfing

    Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The Atlantic's scenery champion and the northern anchor of our East Coast list: dunes, marsh and long wave-swept sand inside the protected Cape Cod National Seashore. Summer access runs by shuttle, the water tops out in the high teens Celsius, and seals (and therefore white sharks) share the water - it earns its place on beauty and body-surfable waves, not bathtub swimming.

Best time: Late June–early September: the only reliably swimmable window this far north.

  8. Cannon Beach

    Sea stacks & tide pools

    northern Oregon coast

The Pacific Northwest's best beach and arguably America's best walking beach: miles of flat sand around the 72-metre Haystack Rock, whose tide pools - and nesting puffins in spring and early summer - you can reach on foot at low tide. Nobody swims here on purpose; the water stays in the low teens, so bring layers, not a swimsuit.

Best time: June–September for the mildest weather; winter storm-watching has its own devoted following.

    Hotels near Cannon Beach
  9. South Beach

    City energy & winter warmth

    Miami Beach, Florida

The city-beach pick from our Florida ranking: genuinely turquoise Atlantic water, the pastel Art Deco district directly behind the sand, and the country's best beach people-watching. It's loud, pricey and busy - that is the product - and the December–April dry season delivers warm swimming when the rest of the mainland is cold.

Best time: December–April: 24–28°C, dry, and zero hurricane risk - Miami's real high season.

    Hotels near South Beach
  10. Gulf Shores

    Family value & white sand

    Alabama Gulf Coast

The same sugar-white quartz sand as the Florida Panhandle at a friendlier price point, with Gulf State Park adding a fishing pier, a protected dune system and a big trail network directly behind the beach. It's the Gulf's best-value family week; summer means warm (~29°C) water, afternoon storms and heavy regional crowds.

Best time: May and September–October: warm Gulf water without peak crowds; October brings the shrimp festival.

    Hotels near Gulf Shores
  11. South Padre Island

    Warm Gulf water & watersports

    far south Texas

The beach that tops our Texas list: a barrier island with the state's clearest Gulf water, steady wind that makes the Laguna Madre flats a kite- and windsurfing hub, and summer sea-turtle releases from the island's rescue centre. Skip March unless you want spring break at full volume.

Best time: April–May and September–November: warm water and quiet sand between spring break and winter season.

    Hotels near South Padre Island
  12. Assateague Island

    Wild horses & beach camping

    Maryland (mid-Atlantic coast)

The wildcard from our East Coast list: an undeveloped 37-mile barrier island where feral horses graze between the dunes and the campsites - the best beach camping in the eastern US. Treat the horses as wildlife (they bite and raid coolers), pack repellent in mid-summer, and enjoy an Atlantic beach that still looks the way the whole coast once did.

Best time: May–June and September: swimmable water on either side of peak mosquitoes and crowds.
