Portugal is one of Europe's sunniest, best-value escapes, and it stays mild long after the rest of the continent cools. The trick is catching the warm, uncrowded shoulders around the July-August Algarve peak. Here's every month rated for weather, crowds and cost.

In Brief

When is the best time to visit Portugal?

The best time to visit Portugal is late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) - warm, sunny days, swimmable seas and prices below the July-August peak, when the Algarve is busiest and dearest. Lisbon and Porto are lovely across the whole spring-to-autumn stretch, and even winter stays mild and green (if wetter), making it a strong low-cost city-break option.
