The timing questions travelers ask most before booking.

The cheapest months are November to March, outside the Christmas-New-Year weeks, when flights and hotels drop and Lisbon and Porto are quiet - mild but often wet. For warmer weather at better-than-summer prices, the shoulder months of March-May and October are ideal: sunny days, low crowds and shoulder-season rates, especially away from the Algarve's peak.

There's no bad time, but July and August are the ones to weigh up if crowds and cost matter: the Algarve is at its busiest and most expensive, and popular beaches and restaurants get packed. Lisbon and Porto stay comfortable thanks to Atlantic breezes, so if you're city-focused, summer is fine. For beaches without the crush, come in June or September instead.

The Atlantic off the Algarve is warmest from July to early October, reaching around 20-22°C - refreshing rather than tropical, thanks to the Atlantic. June is swimmable for most, and September is a favourite as the water is at its warmest just as the peak-summer crowds ease. Spring and late autumn are generally too cold for comfortable swimming without a wetsuit.

Portugal is one of the mildest winter escapes in Europe, with Lisbon and the Algarve often reaching 15-18°C on sunny days - though it's also the wettest season. It's excellent value for city breaks, food and wine, and the Algarve interior sees almond blossom in February. Just pack for rain and shorter days, and don't expect beach weather.

For July and August in the Algarve - and popular spots like the Douro Valley in harvest season - book three to five months ahead, as the best-value places sell out. For spring, autumn and winter city breaks, four to eight weeks is usually fine. Lisbon (LIS), Porto (OPO) and Faro (FAO, for the Algarve) are the main gateways to compare.

Portugal has a mild, sunny climate: warm, dry summers (26-29°C on the coast, hotter inland), and mild, wetter winters (15-16°C in Lisbon). Spring and autumn are warm and largely dry - the sweet spots. The Algarve in the south is the sunniest and warmest region; the north around Porto is greener and rainier; and the interior gets hotter summers and cooler winters than the coast.
