In Brief

When is the best time to visit Italy?

The best time to visit Italy is spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) - warm, sunny days, thinner crowds and comfortable temperatures for both cities and coast. July and August are hot and crowded, and in August many Italians go on holiday, so cities can feel emptied out with some shops closed while the coast is packed. Winter (November-March) is cool and quiet, ideal for low-cost city breaks and skiing in the Alps.

Time it right: Italy's seasonal highlights

  • Spring bloom & Easter

    April–May

Warm, blossoming and beautiful across the whole country; Easter week (Settimana Santa) brings big processions and crowds in Rome.

  • Summer coast season

    June–August

The Amalfi Coast, Sardinia and the lakes are at their best for swimming and sun - but book early and expect peak prices and crowds.

  • Ferragosto

    15 August

Italy's big summer holiday: much of the country stops, city businesses close and locals flood the coast. Plan city visits around it.

  • Harvest & truffle season

    September–November

Grape and olive harvests, white truffles in Piedmont and golden vineyards make autumn a foodie's favourite - with thinner crowds.
