The Best Hotels on Lake Garda, and When Each One Is Shut

The best hotels on Lake Garda are not all open when you are: Villa Cortine Palace closes on 25 October, Val di Sogno shuts from November to March, and from 2 November 2026 to 12 March 2027 not one passenger boat runs on the lake. Eleven hotels from Sirmione to Riva, each checked for its season, its car rules and the swim it offers.

Best all-round: Villa Cortine Palace

In Brief

Which hotel should I book on Lake Garda?

Villa Cortine Palace (€€€€) is the best hotel on Lake Garda from late March to late October: a five-star park on the Sirmione peninsula with its own 500 sq m jetty. It closes on 25 October, so for autumn or Christmas book Grand Hotel Fasano. On a budget, Hotel Marconi has its own pier in Sirmione's old town.

Key takeaways

  • April to October: Villa Cortine Palace, closed 25 October 2026 to 25 March 2027
  • November and December: Grand Hotel Fasano. January to March: either Terme di Sirmione hotel, both quoting January rates
  • No passenger boats run from 2 November 2026 to 12 March 2027, only the Torri to Maderno car ferry
  • Driving into Sirmione's old town: give your hotel the number plate before you arrive

What the bands mean

Rates are shown as bands, not numbers, because every hotel here prices live and several will not quote a winter night at all. On 3 October 2026 we asked three operators' own booking engines for one night on Tuesday 20 October 2026, two adults. Hotel Acquaviva del Garda started at 119 euros and Hotel Sirmione Terme at 154 euros, both with breakfast. Villa Cortine Palace started at 623 euros, prepaid, with breakfast, parking and city tax included, and the same engine refuses every date from 25 October 2026 to 25 March 2027. The other hotels were not priced from their own engines, so their bands are set against those three by published star class and facilities. City tax is extra almost everywhere: Hotel Ilma lists 2 euros a person a night from age 10.

The 11 hotels, and who each one is wrong for

Walking times are to the town's public ferry pier. Walking times run to each hotel's nearest public ferry pier on the Navigazione Laghi network, because in season the boats are how you get around this lake. Hotel Vigna's 30 m and Val di Sogno's 2.4 km are the hotels' own published figures. The rest are OpenStreetMap foot routes from the hotel to the pier, measured on 3 October 2026 and converted at 1.25 m/s, so they are road routes rather than operator figures. Between 2 November 2026 and 12 March 2027 no passenger boat runs at all, so in winter the number only tells you how far the water is.

    Best all-round

A 52-room five-star Relais & Châteaux villa in a five-hectare park on the Sirmione peninsula, with a 500 sq m private jetty, an outdoor pool and a Michelin Key awarded in 2024.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
6 minutes, 430 m to the Sirmione pier to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
A couple who want Sirmione's old town on foot and a private jetty to swim from, between late March and late October.
    Wrong for
Anyone travelling in winter. Its own booking engine shows it closed from 25 October 2026 and reopening on 26 March 2027.
    The catch
The drive in runs through Sirmione's limited traffic zone. The hotel's welcome book lists hours on Saturdays and Sundays when cars cannot enter, and on Sunday afternoons from June to September, 14:00 to 20:00, cars can neither enter nor leave.

    Hotel Sirmione Terme

    €€
Rated 4.3 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,748 reviews, as of October 2026

A 102-room four-star on Piazza Castello by the Scaligero castle, run by Terme di Sirmione, with a sulphurous thermal pool and Jacuzzi at 36°C.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
1 minute, 100 m to the Sirmione pier to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
Anyone who wants to sleep inside the old town and step straight onto a boat. It is the closest hotel here to Sirmione's ferry pier, and it takes January bookings.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants to swim in the lake from the hotel. The operator publishes a thermal pool, not a beach or a jetty.
    The catch
From 15 September to 26 May the thermal pool must be booked and each session is capped at two hours, and free parking applies only to certain room types booked on the hotel's own site.
  • The limestone shelves and clear water of Jamaica Beach on the Sirmione peninsula, seen from above

Via Vittorio Emanuele II, Sirmione old town

    Best value

A small family-run three-star in Sirmione's old town with a lakeside garden, a restaurant and its own pier with sunbeds, where guests can swim whenever they like.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
4 minutes, 300 m to the Sirmione pier to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
Anyone who wants Sirmione's old town and a swim off a private pier without five-star prices.
    Wrong for
Late risers. Check-out is at 10:00, an hour earlier than at most hotels on this page.
    The catch
Parking costs extra wherever the car goes: a few paid spaces in front with old-town access limits after check-in day, or Grifo Parking 400 m away with a shuttle, on request only. The smallest rooms face the main street.
  • The Porto Vecchio harbour in Desenzano del Garda, the town's old port and the stop for the lake ferries

    Hotel Acquaviva del Garda

    €€
Rated 4.4 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,119 reviews, as of October 2026

A four-star spa hotel in Desenzano run by Terme di Sirmione, with lake and park-view rooms and an indoor freshwater pool at about 30°C that is open all year.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
39 minutes, 2.9 km to the Desenzano pier to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
A winter or shoulder-season stay by car. It quoted rates for January 2027, parking is free for every room type, and a family package puts a third guest in free.
    Wrong for
Anyone without a car who wants Desenzano's harbour and trains on foot. The ferry pier is a 39-minute walk away.
    The catch
No beach or jetty is published, so the lake is a view rather than a swim, and from mid-September to late May the spa pool needs booking with a two-hour cap.
  • The villa-lined western shore at Gardone Riviera, looking along the lake from the waterfront

    Gardone Riviera, western shore

    Grand Hotel Fasano

An 1888 imperial hunting lodge, five-star since 1948, with 86 rooms, a 12,000 sq m park on the water, a jetty, indoor and outdoor pools and the Michelin-starred Il Fagiano.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
20 minutes, 1.5 km to the Gardone pier to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
Luxury outside the summer. Its booking calendar blocks arrivals only from 9 to 12 November 2026 and from 11 January to 18 March 2027, so it covers autumn and Christmas.
    Wrong for
Anyone arriving by train without a taxi budget. The hotel names Desenzano as the nearest station and the rest of the trip as a taxi or car ride.
    The catch
Its own terms warn that a continuous stay in the same room is not guaranteed, especially in high season, and that a room change may be needed partway through.
  • The Lungolago Zanardelli promenade along the gulf of Salò, the pedestrian lakefront of the town

    Lungolago Zanardelli, Salò

    Hotel Vigna

Rated 4.8 out of 5 on Google Maps from 283 reviews, as of October 2026

A 27-room hotel run by the same family for three generations on Salò's pedestrian lakefront, with breakfast over the water, a lounge bar and free city bikes.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
Under a minute: the hotel puts the pier 30 m away to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
Arriving without a car. The hotel recommends coming by boat and puts the public boat landing 30 m from the door, with the bus station 250 m away.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants dinner, a pool or a beach at the hotel. It has no restaurant and no pool, and the nearest beaches are about 700 m away.
    The catch
Parking is a paid garage 300 m away, bookable and limited to cars under 2 m high. The city-view rooms have no balcony.
  • Porto Nuovo in Limone sul Garda, with the village and its terraces climbing the cliff behind

Above the old village, Limone sul Garda

    Hotel Ilma

    €€
Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,071 reviews, as of October 2026

A family-run four-star in an olive grove above Limone, with an indoor pool at about 28°C, an unheated outdoor pool, a buffet dinner and an adults-only spa.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
9 minutes, 670 m to the Limone pier to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
A walking or cycling week on the north-west shore, with free parking, e-bikes at 10 euros for up to five hours and an indoor pool for the cool days.
    Wrong for
Families who wanted a shared spa. The spa is clothing-optional and adults-only, and so is the gym.
    The catch
Check-out is at 10:00, there is no beach at the door, and Verona airport is 95 km away by the hotel's own count.
  • The small harbour in the centre of Riva del Garda, at the mountain end of the lake

    Viale Carducci, Riva del Garda

    Lido Palace

    €€€€
Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 947 reviews, as of October 2026

A 42-room five-star in an 1899 Belle Époque villa in Riva, redesigned in 2011, with a 1,500 sq m spa that has indoor and outdoor pools.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
15 minutes, 1.1 km to the Riva pier to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
Luxury at the mountain end of the lake, including the cooler months: the hotel publishes a winter spa timetable and serves breakfast indoors over the lake in winter.
    Wrong for
Families with young children. Under-14s may use the pool area only until 17:30, are barred from the saunas and gym, and a child under four costs 50 euros a day.
    The catch
No beach or jetty is published, and Verona airport is about 82 km away by the hotel's own figure.
  • Palms on the public gravel beach along the lakefront at Riva del Garda

    Viale Rovereto, Riva del Garda

Du Lac et Du Parc Grand Resort

    €€€
Rated 4.6 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,336 reviews, as of October 2026

A four-star superior resort of hotel rooms, suites and bungalows in a 7-hectare park at the north end of the lake, with a sailing club and direct access to the public beach.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
21 minutes, 1.5 km to the Riva pier to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
Families. There is a kids club for ages 3 to 10, a baby space for under-threes, an indoor and an outdoor pool, and sailing lessons from the park.
    Wrong for
Couples who want an adults-only pool late in the season. The over-16 Relax pool and the Roof Garden both close on 5 October 2026.
    The catch
The beach beyond the park is the public one, not a private lido, and the main outdoor pool only reopened on 15 April 2026.
  • The harbour at Malcesine with the public boat ticket office on the quay

Val di Sogno bay, 2 km south of Malcesine

    Hotel Val di Sogno

    €€€
Rated 4.8 out of 5 on Google Maps from 391 reviews, as of October 2026

An adults-only, guests-only hotel on its own bay south of Malcesine, off the main lakeside road, with a private dock, a heated outdoor pool and a private spa.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
About 32 minutes: the hotel puts Malcesine port 2.4 km away to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
A couple who want to walk from the garden into the lake and never see a child, between April and October.
    Wrong for
Anyone under 18, groups of more than six, dog owners, and anyone travelling from November to March, when the hotel is closed.
    The catch
The beach in front is public gravel and stone with no loungers, and the hotel itself advises bathing shoes. Malcesine's port, castle and cable car are 2.4 to 2.7 km away.

    Old centre, Garda

    Hotel Regina Adelaide

    €€€
Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 162 reviews, as of October 2026

A 59-room family-run hotel in an Art Nouveau villa and four adjoining buildings in Garda's old centre, with a large outdoor pool in a private garden and a 400 sq m spa.

Walk to the town's public ferry pier
9 minutes, 660 m to the Garda pier to the town's public ferry pier
    Right for
Christmas or New Year on the lake. It sells Christmas, New Year and Epiphany packages while much of the lake is closed.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants to swim from the hotel. No beach or jetty of its own is published.
    The catch
The festive packages need at least three nights, and New Year guests must check in between 29 and 31 December 2026.

Where not to book in Lake Garda

Nothing on Lake Garda is unsafe, so the traps are the calendar and the car. The first is booking a lake holiday for winter without checking both: Navigazione Laghi runs no passenger boats at all from 2 November 2026 to 12 March 2027, only the Torri to Maderno car ferry, and Villa Cortine and Val di Sogno are both shut for most of that time. The second is driving into Sirmione. The town runs a camera-monitored limited traffic zone that starts at the castle, so your hotel has to register the number plate before you arrive, and the Comune has set 31 afternoons in 2026 when no car may enter or leave between 14:00 and 19:00, apart from the electric golf carts that carry hotel guests and luggage. The third is the word beach. In Malcesine the beaches are publicly owned, as Val di Sogno itself points out, so a lakefront hotel there has a shore, not a private lido.

When to book

Book around the season rather than the month. The full summer boat timetable runs from 16 May to 4 October 2026, a reduced one to 1 November, and boats return on 13 March 2027, two weeks before Villa Cortine reopens on 26 March. Early booking pays where the hotel publishes it: Regina Adelaide offers 10 per cent off 2027 stays booked by 20 March. Cancellation terms tighten in summer, so read them before paying a deposit. At Val di Sogno, April arrivals cancel free up to 7 days out, but June to September arrivals only up to 31 days out. For Christmas and New Year, the packages that exist need three nights.

Best hotels in Lake Garda: FAQ

The questions travellers ask most when picking a hotel here.

From April to October, Sirmione for a hotel stay: three of the hotels here sit in its old town, each within six minutes' walk of the ferry pier, and one has its own pier for swimming. Out of season the passenger boats stop from 2 November to 12 March, so choose a hotel that is open, such as Hotel Sirmione Terme by the castle. Our where-to-stay guide compares the towns themselves.

There is no official answer, but Sirmione is the one the authorities have to manage for crowds. The Comune runs a summer limited traffic zone until 13 October and closed the old town to all cars on 31 afternoons in 2026. For a quieter base, Garda and Salò both have lakefront promenades and a hotel on this page within a short walk of the boats.

Three on this page publish five stars. Villa Cortine Palace in Sirmione is a Relais & Châteaux member with a Michelin Key from 2024. Grand Hotel Fasano in Gardone Riviera is a Leading Hotels of the World member with the Michelin-starred Il Fagiano. Lido Palace in Riva del Garda has 42 rooms and a 1,500 sq m spa. Terme di Sirmione's Grand Hotel Terme in Sirmione is also listed as five-star.

For a hotel stay, Garda, because Hotel Regina Adelaide gives you an old-centre base with a large garden pool and winter packages. The choice matters less than it looks: the two towns are neighbouring stops on the same Navigazione Laghi line, about 15 minutes apart by boat on the autumn timetable. Our where-to-stay guide covers what each town is like.

Villa Cortine Palace for a summer stay, with its 500 sq m jetty and five-hectare park in Sirmione, though it closes from 25 October to 25 March. Grand Hotel Fasano for the rest of the year, since its calendar blocks arrivals only in mid-November and from 11 January to 18 March. Lido Palace for the mountain end of the lake, with a spa that keeps a winter timetable.

Yes, at both ends of the price scale. Grand Hotel Fasano's own site calls it a luxury five-star boutique resort, and Lido Palace keeps to 42 rooms. Cheaper and smaller, Hotel Vigna in Salò has 27 rooms on the lakefront and Hotel Marconi in Sirmione describes itself as a small family-run hotel with its own pier. Val di Sogno is the small adults-only choice.

Some are, and the gap is wide. Villa Cortine Palace is closed from 25 October 2026 to 25 March 2027 and Val di Sogno from November to March. Hotel Sirmione Terme and Hotel Acquaviva del Garda both quoted rates for January 2027, Grand Hotel Fasano's calendar stays open to 10 January, and Regina Adelaide sells Christmas and New Year stays. Remember that no passenger boats run from 2 November to 12 March.

Yes, but only through the limited traffic zone, which starts at the castle, where the local police have a post. The zone is camera-monitored, so your hotel must register your number plate. Hotel Marconi asks for it when you book. Villa Cortine's welcome book lists weekend hours when cars cannot enter, and on the town's pedestrianised afternoons hotels move guests and bags by electric golf cart.

Villa Cortine Palace has a 500 sq m private jetty, Grand Hotel Fasano a jetty and several access points, Hotel Marconi its own pier, Val di Sogno a private dock onto a public gravel beach, and Du Lac et Du Parc direct access to the public beach. Hotel Sirmione Terme, Acquaviva del Garda and Regina Adelaide publish pools but no lake access of their own.

Not as a rule on the hotels here. None of the eleven publishes a general minimum stay on the pages we read. The exception is the festive season: Regina Adelaide's Christmas, New Year and Epiphany packages start at three nights, with New Year arrivals limited to 29 to 31 December 2026. Summer cancellation terms are the bigger catch, at up to 31 days at Val di Sogno.
