Family Friendly Resorts in Crete, and the Four That Publish a Slide Height

Fourteen Cretan beach resorts checked against their own websites in August 2026, chosen on what actually decides a family holiday here: which slides a child is tall enough for, what the all-inclusive plan rations, whether a room really holds five, and what the resort charges for a child. Only four of the fourteen publish a minimum slide height in centimetres. One publishes an upper age limit instead, capping its slides at eight years old.

Grecotel Creta Palace at Rethymno publishes the most complete family package on the island: a new six-slide aqua park with free entry, published slide heights, a zero-entry family pool, a shaded toddler pool and under-12s staying free. Aquila Rithymna Beach publishes a complimentary supervised overnight kids club that nothing else here comes close to. Anemos near Georgioupoli is the only resort with genuine five and six-person rooms as ordinary stock rather than villas. Grecotel Marine Palace has the biggest waterpark and publishes no height rule for any of it.

What the rate covers, and what it does not

Ten of the fourteen sell an all-inclusive plan and every one of them describes it as covering the whole resort's restaurants and bars, so these are genuine resort-wide plans rather than half-board upsells. What varies, and what actually decides the holiday, is how the a la carte restaurants are rationed: a number of visits per stay, a booking rule, or a supplement. Read that line before the inclusions list. Read the watersports line too, because only two operators itemise free non-motorised watersports and several outsource all watersports to a third party operating off the property, which means the equipment in the photographs is not in the rate and may not even be on the beach you are standing on.

What the bands mean

The largest cost difference between two apparently comparable five-star all-inclusive resorts here is what they charge for a child. Grecotel, at all four of its Crete properties, publishes that children up to 12 stay free of charge in their parents' room on selected room types and periods, with kids dining and the Grecoland programme included. Mitsis Selection Rinela publishes the opposite and publishes it as a hard number: children from 0 to 1.99 stay free and children from 2 to 11.99 pay 60 euro per day. Its sister Canvas by Mitsis Cretan Village is materially cheaper on the same model. Then there is the climate crisis resilience fee, which is set by star rating under Greek law: 2 euro for one and two-star hotels, 5 for three-star, 10 for four-star and 15 for five-star, per room per night from April to October. Four operators publish it wrong in four different ways, and one contradicts itself inside a single sentence.

That is the exact opposite of the sister Creta Palace, which publishes two thresholds.

    The catch
    The operator's own FAQ warns that the resort offers limited accessibility because of its hillside location, with key facilities reachable by vehicle, which is a real constraint with a pushchair or a small child. Its kids-stay-free arrangement is published as an offer rather than a standing policy, unlike Grecotel's, so it may not be there when you book.

Where not to book in Crete

Four things to check. The first is the slide rule, because only four of these fourteen resorts publish a minimum height in centimetres and the two biggest waterparks on the roster publish none at all: Grecotel Marine Palace's 6,000 square metre park and Aquila Rithymna's 4,000 square metre one give no height, no age and no weight limit for any slide. Where a rule does exist it can run either way, so read it carefully: Star Beach needs 110 cm and six years, Nana Golden Beach needs 120 cm and eight years for the main slides, and Pilot Beach caps its slides at children up to eight. The second is the child charge, which differs by more than a thousand euro across a stay between Grecotel's under-12s-stay-free and Mitsis Selection Rinela's 60 euro a day from age two. The third is the climate crisis resilience fee, which under Greek law is set by star rating at 2, 5, 10 or 15 euro per room per night from April to October, and which four operators publish incorrectly in four different ways, one of them contradicting itself inside a single sentence. Check it against the statute rather than the hotel. The fourth is the a la carte ration, because every all-inclusive plan here limits the a la carte restaurants somehow and the limit is the thing that decides the week.

When to book

Season dates are the gap in this research and they matter more here than in most places: only three of the fourteen publish an opening and closing date, and two of those three contradict themselves. Abaton publishes the cleanest statement of the three. So confirm in writing that the resort, and specifically the water park, will be open on your dates, because the climate fee runs April to October and several of these places do not. Book a five or six-person room a long way ahead, because Anemos is the only property with them as ordinary stock and there are few. If the slides are the reason for the trip, note that they cluster on the Hersonissos and Anissaras strip in the east, which is the furthest part of the island from Chania, so match the airport to the resort before booking flights.

Four of the fourteen checked. Grecotel Creta Palace publishes 120 cm for selected slides and 130 cm for the extreme slide. Star Beach at Hersonissos publishes 110 cm and, separately, children over six years old. Nana Golden Beach publishes 120 cm and a minimum age of eight for the main slides, with a separate children's park from age three. Canvas by Mitsis Cretan Village publishes 120 cm for its single 75 metre slide, twice. Ten publish nothing, and that includes the two largest waterparks on the island: Grecotel Marine Palace's 6,000 square metre Kingdom of Poseidon and Aquila Rithymna's 4,000 square metre park both name their attractions and give no height, no age and no weight limit for any of them.

It is the single largest difference between two otherwise comparable five-star resorts here. Grecotel publishes at all four of its Crete properties that children up to 12 stay free of charge in their parents' room, on selected room types and periods, with complimentary kids dining and snacks and the Grecoland programme included. Mitsis Selection Rinela publishes the opposite as a hard number: children from 0 to 1.99 stay free and children from 2 to 11.99 pay 60 euro per day. Its sister property Canvas by Mitsis Cretan Village uses the same model at a materially lower daily rate. Aquila, Star Beach, Nana Golden Beach, Pilot Beach and Phaea publish no stay-free age at all, and several publish only a free-food threshold instead, which is not the same thing.

It is a charge set by Greek law and it is a star-rating signal, so you can read it backwards to work out what a hotel is. Under Law 5162/2024 it runs from April to October at 2 euro per room per night for one and two-star hotels, 5 euro for three-star, 10 euro for four-star and 15 euro for five-star. Where these operators publish the figure it matches the statute exactly, which makes it a useful cross-check on a resort's own star claim. Four operators publish it wrong in four different ways, and one manages to contradict itself inside a single sentence by naming four stars, writing fifteen in words and ten in figures. If a quoted fee does not match the four statutory bands, the hotel has made an error rather than the law.

No operator on this roster publishes a connecting-room category with a confirmed door, and three publish wording that looks like one and is not. The closest anyone comes is Grecotel Creta Palace, which describes an actual interconnecting door inside a single room type rather than between two separately sold rooms: its Family Room Sea View has two rooms joined that way. So if the requirement is two bookable rooms with a door, Crete cannot supply it from published sources. What the island does supply instead is genuine multi-room units, and Anemos is the only property here with five and six-person rooms as ordinary stock rather than as villas.

Mostly unanswerable, which is itself the finding. Not one of the fourteen publishes a midday or lunch closure, but only six publish kids club hours at all, so for the other eight the question cannot be settled from the operator's own site. Where hours do exist they cluster around a full day: the two Mitsis properties both publish Storyland running 10:00 to 18:00. The age floor is more consistent than the hours: nine of the fourteen set it at 4, with under-4s admitted only when a parent stays with them, and only two properties offer genuine childcare below that. Aquila Rithymna Beach is the standout with a creche plus the only complimentary supervised overnight club found anywhere in this research.

Usually not, and several resorts outsource them entirely. Only two operators itemise free non-motorised watersports. Nana Golden Beach splits the list precisely, naming pedalos, canoes and snorkelling as free under the all-inclusive plan. Anemos publishes the opposite arrangement plainly: there are no watersports at the resort, the centre sits 600 metres from the hotel beach and it is run by an external supplier. That pattern matters because the paddleboards and pedalos in resort photography are frequently a third party's equipment on a beach the resort does not control, at a price the resort does not publish. Ask which company runs the watersports and where it is before assuming any of it is in the rate.
