Family Resorts in Bali, and the Waterslide Heights Nobody Will Publish

Twelve large Bali resorts in Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Tanjung Benoa and Ubud, checked against their own websites in August 2026 through one lens: what the room rate covers and what lands on the bill afterwards. Six of the twelve publish a water slide or a splash feature and not one of them publishes a minimum height for it. The single exception publishes the opposite, a maximum, and it is the most useful sentence any of these operators has written.

Which Bali resort is genuinely built for a family?

Movenpick Jimbaran publishes the best-described family product on the island: an eleven-hour kids club with a sleeping room and a teen floor, a purpose-fitted children's bedroom, a toddlers pool and a kids pool with a slide. Merusaka Nusa Dua publishes the friendliest rules, with a clean two-tier kids club and occupancy grids that count the infant and the cot. Padma Resort Ubud is the only resort in Bali publishing a kids pool depth in centimetres. Mulia is the one to check hardest, because its rooms take two adults and one child and it has no rollaway beds at all.

What the rate covers, and what it does not

Read the kids club row twice, because free and supervised are different claims. Four resorts state plainly that the club is free: Mulia, Merusaka, Nikko and Ayodya. Two of them then say in their own words that it is not childcare. Hotel Nikko publishes that the club attendant is available only to conduct the daily activities and is not a babysitting service, and is therefore not responsible for taking care of the children, and invites parents to observe. Ayodya sells supervision separately as babysitting. So the honest reading of a free Bali kids club is a free activity programme with a member of staff in the room, and the thing a parent actually wants, a couple of hours off, is the paid product underneath it.

What the bands mean

Bali quotes plus-plus and almost nobody says what the two pluses are worth. Ayodya Resort is the only operator here that publishes a combined figure, printing that rates do not include 21 per cent service charge and government tax. Mulia publishes the service-charge half alone, at 10 per cent, and calls the rest applicable government taxes without a number. Seven of the twelve publish no service charge, no tax and no statement of whether the rate is net or plus-plus anywhere at all. For context that is checkable, Indonesian law caps the hotel tax component at 10 per cent under the 2022 fiscal-relations act, with each regency setting the actual rate, so a 21 per cent combined quote is a 10 per cent service charge plus a tax at or under the cap. Babysitting, where published, varies by a factor of five: Hotel Nikko charges IDR 100,000 net an hour a child, Ayodya charges IDR 150,000 an hour for one child rising to IDR 500,000 for three, before that 21 per cent, with a maximum of two children per babysitter and an extra IDR 50,000 after 10pm.

Where not to book in Bali

Three traps. The first is the waterslide, which is the reason many families choose a Bali resort and which almost nobody documents: six of the twelve publish a slide or splash feature and not one publishes a minimum height, while AYANA publishes a maximum instead, at 1.4 metres with a minimum age of 5, so a tall nine or ten-year-old is excluded from the slides at a resort chosen for them. The second is occupancy, and Mulia is the hardest case: a standard room takes two adults and one child under 12 on existing bedding, rollaway beds are not available at all, and a twelfth birthday reclassifies a child as an adult. The third is the word free on a kids club, because two operators say in writing that it is not childcare. Hotel Nikko publishes that its club attendant only conducts the daily activities, is not a babysitting service and is not responsible for taking care of the children, and Ayodya sells supervision separately. Finally, note that Hotel Nikko's own site publishes two different children-stay-free ages, 11 and 4, and two different kids club age bands, and both readings are printed above rather than reconciled.

When to book

Ask for the rate in writing with the tax attached, because only two of the twelve resorts here publish a percentage and the difference is real: Ayodya's published 21 per cent combined charge turns a seven-night quote into something meaningfully larger, and seven resorts publish no tax position at all. If the kids club matters, ask for its hours as well as its ages, because four of the twelve publish no hours and the published spread runs from Movenpick's eleven hours down to eight at Merusaka and Nikko, and AYANA closes for an hour at lunch. July, August and the Christmas and New Year weeks are the constraint on family rooms, and the connecting-door products are the first to go because there are few of them. Budget the Bali tourist levy separately at IDR 150,000 a person, once per trip, with no published child exemption.

Six of the twelve checked, and none of them will tell you who is allowed on. Ayodya publishes Kids Water Slides and a Splash Pad with a dedicated page and hours. Mulia publishes a Splash Pool with slides, fountains and a giant tipping bucket for ages 3 to 12. Movenpick publishes a kids pool with a water slide. Sofitel confirms a children's pool with artificial sand and slides. Padma Resort Ubud and AYANA both publish slide features too. Not one publishes a minimum height. AYANA is the single operator that publishes any height rule at all and it runs the other way: children must be at least 5 years old and no taller than 1.4 metres. InterContinental publishes five fully dimensioned pools and has no slide anywhere on the property.

Often free, and mostly not childcare. Four resorts state plainly that the club is free: Mulia, Merusaka, Nikko and Ayodya, whose kids activities page is headed free for all resort guests. Two of them then draw the distinction themselves. Hotel Nikko publishes that the club attendant is available only to conduct the daily activities, that it is not a babysitting service, that she is not responsible for taking care of the children, and that parents are welcome to observe. Ayodya sells supervision as a separate paid babysitting product at IDR 150,000 an hour for one child, rising to IDR 500,000 for three, before 21 per cent, with a maximum of two children per babysitter.

A service charge and a government tax, and only one resort here publishes the combined number. Ayodya prints that rates do not include 21 per cent service charge and government tax, without splitting it. Mulia publishes the service-charge half alone at 10 per cent and describes the rest as applicable government taxes with no figure. Kempinski states in words that tax is additional and not included in the advertised rate. The other seven publish nothing at all: no service charge, no tax and no statement of whether the rate is net or plus-plus. For a checkable reference point, Indonesian law caps the hotel tax component at 10 per cent under the 2022 fiscal-relations act, with the actual rate set by each regency.

Five publish a genuine connecting-door product and the wording is what separates them from an adjoining one. Nusa Dua Beach Hotel is the clearest, publishing a Family Room for 4 that consists of two adjoining Deluxe Rooms joined by a connecting door. Padma Resort Ubud's Family Premier Room is a Premier Room with a king connecting to a Premier Oversized Twin Room. Movenpick's Family Prestige Room is 76 square metres across two connecting rooms with two bathrooms. Ayodya sells a Family Interconnecting Room of two 48 square metre rooms. Sofitel's family offer works differently, discounting a whole adjoining room rather than joining two, which makes it a two-room booking at a two-room price.

Almost nobody publishes either, with two exceptions pointing in opposite directions. Hotel Nikko is the only property in this research that publishes both a cot price and a cot age limit: baby cots are free on request and not suitable for a child over 4, with an extra bed at IDR 250,000 plus plus a night for a child aged 6 to 12. Mulia lists baby cribs as complimentary under its kids amenities, on request and subject to availability, and then states that rollaway beds are not available at all. Merusaka does something better than pricing a cot, building it into the published occupancy, with both family room types stated as five guests including one infant with a baby cot. Everyone else publishes a cot on request with no price.

Where a depth is published at all it is usually in metres, and one operator prints centimetres. Padma Resort Ubud publishes its kids pool at 45cm, which is the only centimetre figure in this research and the most useful one for a toddler. AYANA publishes its kids pool at 0.8 metres. InterContinental publishes the most complete set anywhere: Fun Pools and Fountain Pool at 0.75 metres, the Balinese Bath and Club Pool at 1.2 metres and Nirwana at 1.5. Ayodya publishes its family pool at 1.2 to 1.6 metres, which is over a small child's head throughout. Several resorts, including Sofitel, Novotel and Nusa Dua Beach Hotel, name a children's pool and publish no depth for it at all.
