Family Hotels in Crete, and the Tax Twelve Operators Do Not Mention

Twelve Cretan town hotels across Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos, checked against their own websites in August 2026. The finding that costs a family most is an absence: not one of the twelve mentions the Greek climate crisis resilience tax anywhere on its own site, and that is the charge added to the bill at check-out. Twelve out of twelve. The second finding is that a room called a family room here is more often a marketing label than a specification.

This page covers the town hotels of Crete rather than the beach resorts, which is a different product and a different page. Three patterns run through all twelve. The first is that the family label rarely survives contact with the specification: two operators publish a room marketed to families and then decline to specify it, and one publishes a Superior Family Room while never using the word child anywhere on its website. The second is that where a room does sleep four, the fourth place is a sofa bed more often than a real bed, and the pattern runs the wrong way with price, so the cheaper family rooms tend to have the better beds. The third is the occupancy inversion, present at seven of the twelve, where a bigger or dearer room holds fewer people than a smaller one. Read the bed line, never the room name.

What the bands mean

Two operators publish a cot price and they publish opposite answers ten minutes apart in the same city. Capsis Astoria in Heraklion gives a free cot for infants aged 0 to 2.99. GDM Megaron, a short walk away, charges 40 euro per day per cot, on request and subject to confirmation. Capsis Astoria is also the only hotel on this roster that prices the bed a child sleeps in: the first child aged 3 to 11.99 is free in an extra bed and the second child in the same band costs 18,00 euro a day. Beyond that the money simply is not published. Zero of the twelve publish a child breakfast price and zero publish an adult one either, though eight publish breakfast hours. Not one publishes working booking terms and conditions: two publish website terms of use that are copyright documents, one loads a terms page with a header and no body text at all, and the rest have no terms page in their sitemap.

The 12 hotels, and the room to ask for at each

Walking times are to the operator's own published address and stated position. Each row gives the operator's own published address and its own stated position, quoted as the operator's claim. Distances between towns are not published by most of these hotels: only two publish any figure at all for the other end of the island, and one of those, Aquila Atlantis in Heraklion, puts Chania airport at approximately 140 km from its front door, which is the most useful number on the roster for anyone planning to combine the two ends of Crete.

It also publishes the clearest cot trap here, that the cot sits within the room's maximum occupancy rather than outside it, which is the opposite of Capsis Astoria's rule.

Where not to book in Crete

Four things to settle before you book. The first is the tax, because it is the largest unavoidable surprise on a Cretan hotel bill and not one of these twelve operators mentions the climate crisis resilience charge anywhere, including on their terms pages, where nine of them have no working terms page at all. Ask what will be added at check-out. The second is the pool, which five of these hotels do not have, three of them in Chania town, and which none of the seven that do have describes with a lifeguard statement. Only two publish a depth and both are bad news for a small child: 2.20 metres maximum at Brascos with no shallow section, and a 1,20 metre minimum on the Capsis Astoria rooftop. The third is the occupancy inversion, present at seven of the twelve, where the larger and more expensive room holds fewer people. The fourth is GDM Megaron, which publishes outright that no extra person can be accommodated even a child of three or older, and which charges 40 euro a day for a cot while a hotel ten minutes away gives one free.

When to book

July and August are the constraint and they are the only months when several of these pools are open at all, which the operators mostly do not date. Family rooms are thin on this roster, with most hotels publishing one four-person type in a range of six to eleven, so book that specific room type early rather than the hotel. Two of the three Chania hotels that publish a late check-out charge it steeply, at 50 per cent of the room rate for a departure up to 18:00, which is worth knowing when the ferry or the flight is in the evening. Breakfast windows are short and cluster tightly, with seven of the eight that publish hours starting at 07:00 or 07:30 and finishing between 10:00 and 11:00, and the shortest is two and a half hours, so a family that sleeps in will miss it.

Family hotels in Crete: FAQ

The questions parents ask most when booking a room here.

Nobody on this roster does. The Greek climate crisis resilience tax, the successor to the old overnight stay tax, is charged per room per night and collected at check-out, and not one of the twelve operators checked here mentions it anywhere on its own website. That is twelve out of twelve, and it holds even on the terms pages, because nine of the twelve publish no working booking terms at all: two publish website terms of use that are copyright and disclaimer documents, one loads a terms page containing a header, a cookie banner and no body text, and one publishes a cancellation page that is a single paragraph telling you to read your confirmation. Ask the hotel directly what will be added at check-out, and treat any quoted total from these sites as incomplete.

Two publish an answer and the two answers are opposite, in the same city, ten minutes apart. Capsis Astoria in Heraklion publishes a free cot for infants from 0 to 2.99 years, and its policy leaves the infant outside the room's guest count. GDM Megaron, also in central Heraklion, publishes a baby cot on request subject to confirmation with an extra charge of 40 euro per day per cot. Theartemis Palace in Rethymno publishes no price but publishes the condition that matters more, that the cot is provided within the maximum occupancy of the room, which means the baby uses one of the room's places. The other nine publish a cot on request with no price, or, in the cases of Lato, Domus Renier, Du Lac and Aquila Atlantis, publish no cot at all.

At six of the twelve, and the beds vary more than the number does. Lato's Family Room gives four real beds across two internally connected bedrooms. Theartemis Palace's Family Room gives four singles or a double plus two singles, all real. Capsis Astoria's Family Room gives three real beds and one extra bed. Kydon's Family Suite goes further, to six, across two bedrooms and a sitting room. Aquila Atlantis and Sofia both publish a four-person family room and both contradict themselves about the beds in it on the same page. Six publish nothing that holds four: Samaria, Brascos, Porto Veneziano beyond a claim, Domus Renier beyond one unit, GDM Megaron by explicit refusal, and Du Lac, where nothing holds more than two.

Seven of the twelve have one and five do not, including three of the four Chania town hotels. Of the seven pools, only two publish a depth and neither suits a small child: Brascos in Rethymno publishes a 70 square metre pool with a maximum depth of 2.20 metres, no shallow section and no children's pool, and Capsis Astoria publishes a 75 square metre rooftop pool with a minimum depth of 1,20 metres. Zero of the twelve publish a lifeguard statement, and the word lifeguard appears on none of the seven sites that have a pool. Theartemis Palace in Rethymno is the only operator on the roster with a published children's water provision, a central pool that includes a children's section and a second outdoor pool with a children's area.

Not one publishes a connecting door between two separately bookable rooms. The closest anyone comes is GDM Megaron's single sentence saying the hotel has some types of rooms that can be connected, which names no room types, uses no door language and never says whether such a pair can actually be booked. What Crete offers instead is the two-bedroom unit inside one booking: Lato's Family Room is described as two bedrooms internally connected, Kydon's Family Suite has two bedrooms plus a sitting room, and Capsis Astoria's Family Room puts a single bed in a second bedroom. If two rooms with a door is the requirement, this roster cannot supply it.

Because these hotels price by category and view rather than by capacity, and seven of the twelve publish a case where it happens. The sharpest survives a bed-for-bed comparison: at Capsis Astoria the 34 square metre Business Suite and the 45 square metre Grand Suite Panoramic View carry the identical published bed line, and the smaller one takes more guests. At Lato the 40 square metre Executive Sea View Suite, the hotel's largest and dearest room, holds three while the 35 square metre Family Room holds four. At Theartemis the room called simply Suite is 40 square metres and holds two, while the Maisonette at 35 square metres holds four. At Kydon two 60 square metre suites differ by two people. Read the occupancy line, not the price or the square metres.
