Warmest sea of the year, half the crowds

September is the local's answer to when to do Greece: the Aegean has been warming all summer and peaks now, the meltemi winds ease, ferries still run full schedules, and the August crush is gone. Caldera sunsets, beach days and taverna dinners all improve when you subtract the queues.

When to go: 27-29°C, sea at its annual warmest - the connoisseur's window.

    $$$

Oktoberfest - the world's biggest party

Oktoberfest opens in mid-September (not October - the name fools everyone), filling the Theresienwiese with six million visitors, fourteen giant tents, brass bands and Masskrugs of festival beer. Around it, Munich itself is at its best: beer gardens in late-summer sun and the Alps an hour away.

When to go: 15-20°C - festival season; book beds months ahead.

  3. 3.Amalfi CoastItaly

    $$$

La dolce vita with parking spaces

September deflates the Amalfi Coast's August madness: the coast road unclogs, Positano's beach clubs have loungers free, the sea stays at 25°C, and restaurant tables reappear. It's the same postcard at a civilized volume - and hotel rates drop with the crowds.

When to go: 24-27°C, warm sea - August's beauty, none of its chaos.

  4. 4.BarcelonaSpain

    $$

Beach city at full power, locals back in town

September Barcelona gets its city life back - locals return from holidays, the festival calendar restarts with La Mercè (the city's biggest street festival, late September), and the beaches stay warm and swimmable. It's the month the city feels most itself while still feeling like summer.

When to go: 24-26°C, warm sea - plus La Mercè's fireworks and human towers.

  5. 5.Lisbon & the AlgarvePortugal

    $$

    Summer extended, prices retreating

Portugal stretches summer deep into September: Lisbon idles at 26°C, the Algarve's beaches stay warm into October, and the surf coast hits its clean-swell season. Hotel rates step down from August across the country while nothing about the weather does.

When to go: 24-27°C, sunny - high summer's weather at shoulder prices.

  6. 6.BaliIndonesia

    $

    Dry season's golden final act

September closes Bali's dry season in style: rice terraces at their greenest-gold, surf still pumping on the west coast, waterfalls full but trails dry - and the July-August crowd surge gone. Villa rates soften while the weather holds.

When to go: 29-31°C, dry - the last full month of prime season.

  7. 7.Kyoto & JapanJapan

    $$

Summer heat breaking, autumn calendar starting

September eases Japan out of its sweltering summer: temperatures fall through the month, the summer holiday crowds end, and by late September Kyoto's gardens hint at the autumn to come. It's the value window between the summer and November foliage peaks.

When to go: 24-30°C cooling through the month - shoulder-season rates.

  8. 8.New England (Boston)USA

    $$

First foliage, harbor towns, harvest stands

Late September lights the first fires of foliage season in northern New England while Boston enjoys its finest weather of the year - crisp, clear harbor days made for the Freedom Trail and Fenway. Come the last week for early color without October's leaf-peeper premium.

When to go: 15-22°C, crisp and clear - early color from late month.

  9. 9.MarrakechMorocco

    $$

    The furnace switches off

September breaks Marrakech's summer extremes: days settle back toward 32°C then fall through the month, evenings turn rooftop-perfect, and the souks and palaces reclaim their comfort. It's the start of the city's long golden season at pre-peak prices.

When to go: 30-33°C easing - the gateway to the best months.

La rentrée - the city switches back on

Paris in September is Paris at its most alive: the rentrée brings locals home, new exhibitions and menus launch, café terraces stay warm into the evening, and the light turns golden. August's ghost-town lull ends overnight - and hotel rates stay gentler than June's.

When to go: 17-22°C, golden light - the city's great re-opening.

How to choose your September trip

The Mediterranean is the September default for a reason

Sea at its warmest, crowds at a third of August, prices down 20-40%: Greece, coastal Italy, Spain and Portugal are all playing their best month. If a beach-plus-culture week is the brief, don't overthink it - point at the Med.

Skip the Caribbean this month

September is the statistical peak of hurricane season - the one month the Caribbean and Gulf genuinely earn their discounts. If you need tropics in September, the Pacific side (Bali, Hawaii's dry leeward coasts) carries none of that risk.

Oktoberfest needs a plan, not a whim

The festival's opening weekends sell Munich out entirely - beds triple and tents book out. Reserve accommodation months ahead, go midweek for breathing room, and know that the first two weekends are the rowdiest. The last days (early October) are the calmest.

Watch the one-week price cliff

In Europe, everything changes the week schools return (the first days of September): the same hotels drop 20-40% from the last week of August. If your dates float at all, the second week of September is the single best value-to-weather ratio of the European year.
