Best Family Hotels in Costa Rica, and the Two With a Real Kids Club

These are the best family hotels Costa Rica has to offer by one test: what each operator puts in writing about children, read on its own website in October 2026. Twelve hotels across Guanacaste, Arenal, Manuel Antonio and the Central Valley, and only two of them run a supervised kids club, both from age four. The other ten offer naturalist walks, a water slide or nothing, and one tells you on its own FAQ not to swim at its beach.

Best for a family of four: Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica

In Brief

Which Costa Rica hotel is best for a family of four?

Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, in the top band, is the cleanest answer: two-queen rooms published for two adults and two children, a free kids club for ages 4 to 12, a teen centre for 10 to 18, and Liberia airport 40 minutes away. For value, Arenal Observatory Lodge lets young children stay free.

Key takeaways

  • Only 2 of 12 hotels run a supervised kids club, and both start at age four
  • Arenas del Mar advises against swimming at its own two beaches, citing big waves and possible riptides
  • Nayara Gardens caps every room at three guests and offers no connecting rooms
  • Who counts as a child runs from 0 to 8 at Parador to 3 to 12 at Peace Lodge

Which rooms actually fit your family

Find your party shape along the top, then read down. A tick means the hotel publishes a room that holds that group in one booking. A dash means the hotel does not publish the fact at all, which is not the same as a no, and is why the column exists.

Every tick comes from the hotel's own website or its brand's, read in October 2026. Four Seasons and Margaritaville refuse automated requests, so their pages were read through a text reader that returned the operator's own page. A dash means the operator publishes nothing, which is not the same as a no. The connecting column is strict: a tick needs the operator to say in writing that rooms connect, which five do, and Nayara Gardens is marked no because its FAQ says it has no connecting rooms. Two patterns run through the twelve. Childcare is rare, with only Four Seasons and RIU running a supervised club. And the definition of a child changes at every door, from 0 to 8 at Parador to 3 to 12 at Peace Lodge.

These are family facts, and family facts go stale. This table is set for re-verification in April 2027.

What the bands mean

No hotel here publishes a fixed nightly rate on a page we could read, so the bands below are relative tiers. Every operator prices in US dollars, and the figures worth knowing are the extras. The 13 per cent sales tax is left off the rate at The Springs, Peace Lodge and Finca Rosa Blanca, all of which say so, while Arenal Observatory Lodge includes taxes and breakfast. Extra children are charged by the night in three places: $50 at The Springs (one paragraph on the same room page says $40), $30 at Peace Lodge, and $25 for ages 4 to 11 at Finca Rosa Blanca. Who counts as a child is the real variable. Parador defines children as 0 to 8, Arenal Observatory Lodge frees under-8s on one page and 8-and-unders on another, and Peace Lodge prices ages 3 to 12. Park fees add up too: Manuel Antonio National Park charges non-residents $18.08 for an adult and $5.65 for a child aged 2 to 12, and La Paz Waterfall Gardens $56 and $40, plus taxes.

Walking times are to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure. In a country where the four family regions sit hours apart, the transfer matters more than any walk, so each row gives the hotel's own published drive time from the nearest international airport: Liberia (LIR) for Guanacaste, San Jose (SJO) for Manuel Antonio and the Central Valley, either for Arenal. Four of the twelve publish no drive time at all, and that is recorded rather than estimated.

  • Bahia Prieta on the Papagayo Peninsula in Guanacaste, framed by an overhanging tree

    Peninsula Papagayo, Guanacaste

Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica

    €€€€
Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,775 reviews, as of October 2026
    Best for four

A resort on the Papagayo Peninsula with two beaches of its own, and the only hotel here that runs both a supervised kids club and a separate teen centre. Kids For All Seasons takes ages 4 to 12, with under-fours welcome alongside a parent, and the Tuanis Teen Center takes 10 to 18. Both are free to registered guests, and children under five eat free from the children's menu.

    Room to book
A Terraza, Brisa or Cielo room with two queen beds, published for two adults and two children
    Breakfast for children
Children under five eat free from the children's menu at the restaurants, excluding in-room dining
Walk to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
40 minutes and 37.5 km by car to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
    Right for
Two parents and two children aged 4 to 12 who want a kids club, a teen club and a short transfer.
    Wrong for
A family of five on a guest-room budget.
    The catch
The guest rooms stop at two adults and two children, and the two-queen version takes a crib but no rollaway, so a fifth person means a three-bedroom suite or a private residence. The beach club's infinity pool at Virador is adults-only. The family page also gives two opening times for the kids club, 8:00 am in the schedule and 8:30 am in the FAQ.
  • Families walking and paddling on Playa Matapalo in Guanacaste under a clear sky

    Playa Matapalo, Guanacaste

    Hotel Riu Guanacaste

    €€€
Rated 4.2 out of 5 on Google Maps from 11,172 reviews, as of October 2026

A 24-hour all-inclusive on Playa Matapalo with six pools, a children's pool with slides and free entry to the Splash Water World park inside the complex. It is one of only two hotels here with a named kids club, RIU Land, which the brand runs for ages 4 to 12. It also sells two standard rooms as a pair with a connecting door, in writing.

    Room to book
Superior Family Room (2 Bedrooms), 58 square metres, a king in one room and three twins or two large beds in the other
    Children stay free
The brand's offer terms say free kids apply only when children share a room with two adults, and the hotel page gives no age
    Breakfast for children
All meals are in the 24-hour all-inclusive, with no child rate published
Walk to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
No drive time published to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
    Right for
A family of five who want two bedrooms, a water park and every meal paid in advance.
    Wrong for
Parents who want quiet evenings or nature on the doorstep.
    The catch
The hotel sells itself as much on nightlife as on children, with the RIU Party and RIU Get Together Party at its nightclub and a 24-hour sports bar, and its swim-up bars are for over-18s only. No room carries a published maximum, and its own FAQ on travel time from the airport gives no time at all, only a transfer that must be booked at least seven days ahead.
  • The sweep of Playa Tamarindo in Guanacaste with flowering trees along the sand

    Playa Tamarindo, Guanacaste

    Hotel Capitan Suizo

    €€
Rated 4.8 out of 5 on Google Maps from 671 reviews, as of October 2026

A family-owned hotel directly on Playa Tamarindo, a 10-minute walk along the sand from town. It answers the beach question better than anyone here: its FAQ says the currents are gentle, the beach is flat and the hotel sits at the end of the bay where the waves are calmest, and warns that they build at high tide. Breakfast is included in every rate.

    Room to book
Two Superior Rooms with a connecting door, or the Four-Bedroom Suite for six to eight
    Breakfast for children
A full buffet breakfast is included in every rate, with no child price published
Walk to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
About 60 minutes by car to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
    Right for
A family who want to swim from the hotel's own stretch of beach and walk into town.
    Wrong for
Parents counting on a kids club to give them a few hours off.
    The catch
No ordinary room takes four. The rooms have a king and a queen sofa bed and the hotel caps them at three guests, so a family of four books two connecting Superior Rooms or the Four-Bedroom Suite. There is no kids club, no children's pool is listed and there is no free airport transfer.
  • Playa Flamingo in Guanacaste at sunset with the wooded headland at the end of the beach

    Playa Flamingo, Guanacaste

    Margaritaville Beach Resort Playa Flamingo

    €€
Rated 4.4 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,222 reviews, as of October 2026

A beachfront resort on Playa Flamingo that publishes a guest count on each of its family rooms. The Studio Family Suite takes five with two doubles, a twin sleeper sofa and a kitchenette. It also publishes its transfer price: $100 a van from Liberia airport, plus 13 per cent tax.

    Room to book
Studio Family Suite, two doubles and a twin sleeper sofa with a kitchenette, published for five
    Breakfast for children
On the optional all-inclusive plan, children aged 0 to 5 eat free with a paying adult from the children's menu
Walk to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
About 1.5 hours by car to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
    Right for
A family of five who want one room with a kitchenette and a known transfer cost.
    Wrong for
Families who want a supervised kids club.
    The catch
The resort's own room page contradicts itself on the Family Bunk Bed Junior Suite: the heading lists two double beds and a sleeper sofa, and the description lists a king and two sets of twin bunks. There is no named kids club, only a family centre, a covered children's pool and babysitting at an unpublished price. The resort describes its beach as having waves made for body-surfing.

A hot-springs resort above the Arenal valley, six kilometres from the volcano and outside the government danger zone, by its own account. It publishes a base and a maximum occupancy on each room it lists, and runs its own river centre below the hotel with tubing, river paddling, horse riding and a 15-metre climbing wall.

    Room to book
Vista Grande Double Queen, two queens and a pull-out sofa, published at a maximum of six
    Children stay free
No. Every child above the base occupancy is charged by the night
    Breakfast for children
Not included in any rate, and no child price published
Walk to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
No drive time published to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
    Right for
A family of five or six who want one big room, hot pools and a water slide.
    Wrong for
Parents who want childcare, or a toddler-proof room.
    The catch
Its river centre states that it has no lifeguards or babysitters, that every child 16 and under must be supervised by an adult, and that children who cannot swim well should stay out of the hot springs and river pools. The Family Suite's second bedroom is an open mezzanine reached only by stairs, with limited privacy in the operator's own words.

    Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails

A lodge on 870 acres between Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal, seven kilometres from the national park entrance. The rate includes breakfast and taxes, and so do a guided morning walk, 11 kilometres of trails, a tractor ride three days a week and an evening natural history talk twice a week. Young children stay free.

A Standard room with two double beds, or the Junior Suite with two kings
    Children stay free
Under 8 free sharing with parents on the room pages, 8 and under on the rates page, and 9 and over pay as adults
    Breakfast for children
An a la carte breakfast and taxes are included in the room rate
Walk to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
3.5 hours from SJO or 4 hours from LIR by road to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
    Right for
A nature-first family with children young enough to stay free.
    Wrong for
Families who want a beach, a kids club or dinner in town.
    The catch
It is the most remote hotel here. The lodge says the last 9 km is a public road of gravel and dirt that can be slow after rain, La Fortuna's shops and clinics are 22 km away, and the transfer from Liberia is four hours. Its own pages disagree on whether an eight-year-old stays free.

    Nayara Gardens

    €€€€
Rated 4.9 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,102 reviews, as of October 2026

The family half of the Nayara rainforest complex near Arenal, with rooms and villas set in tropical gardens, family pools and guided walks to find sloths and toucans. Its sister property Nayara Springs is adults-only and sends families here. Cribs and high chairs are free, and every room has mosquito nets and screened windows.

    Room to book
A single room, which takes three people at most
Walk to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
About 3 hours by car from SJO or LIR to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
    Right for
Two parents and one child, or a baby in a free crib.
    Wrong for
Any family of four that wants to sleep under one roof.
    The catch
A family of four cannot share a room. The FAQ says rooms take up to three guests including children and that the resort does not offer connecting rooms, so two parents and two children need two separate rooms with no door between them. There is no formal kids club, and babysitting costs extra.
  • Pale sand of Playa Espadilla Norte at Manuel Antonio with a forested headland

Arenas del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort

Rated 4.8 out of 5 on Google Maps from 674 reviews, as of October 2026

A 37-room resort on an 11-acre reserve joined to Manuel Antonio National Park, with private paths to two beaches. It is the most family-organised hotel in the region: in-house naturalist guides, kids' menus with half portions, cribs on request, and a written plan for a family of five. Breakfast is included.

    Room to book
Ocean View Premium Suite for two adults and two children, or the Playitas Suite for up to eight
    Breakfast for children
An a la carte breakfast is included in room rates, with kids' menus and half portions and no child price
Walk to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
No drive time published to the nearest international airport, by the hotel's own figure
    Right for
A family of four or five who want wildlife from the balcony and a guide to find it.
    Wrong for
Families whose plan is to swim in the sea every day.
    The catch
Its own FAQ says it does not advise swimming at either of its beaches, because the waves can be big and riptides are possible, so the sea is for paddling and the swimming happens in the two pools. The same FAQ says nearby activities suit children over six best.

    Right for
A family of four who want a pool of their own away from the adults.
    Wrong for
Families of five, and anyone who needs a refundable rate.
    The catch
Its only published kids-stay-free offer covered June to August 2026 and had to be booked by 6 February 2026 with full non-refundable payment, and no room is published above four guests. The resort is not on the beach, so the sand is a shuttle ride away.

A large resort on the Punta Quepos headland beside Manuel Antonio National Park, with more than 130 rooms, a shaded children's pool, a toddlers' playroom, a game room and mini-golf. Biesanz Beach, which it calls perfect for swimming and snorkelling, is a short walk away. The Family Suite has three king bedrooms.

    Room to book

    Wrong for
Families with children over eight who expect child pricing.
    The catch
Its FAQ counts only ages 0 to 8 as children, three of its five pools are adults-only, and the perk attached to every suite, beach club access at Miamar, is at an adults-only sister resort. It publishes no airport drive time and no shuttle price.

    Children stay free
No. Villa Lago charges $30 plus tax for each extra child aged 3 to 12

    Wrong for
Families who want a pool day or a beach.
    The catch
Very little is included: the lodge says rates exclude breakfast, every other meal and the 13 per cent sales tax, and each extra child costs $30 a night. The waterfall trail is a descent by paved paths and steps with handrails, which the park itself describes.

    The catch
With 14 rooms and only two villas, the family option is scarce, and the inn's rate policy warns it may not be able to keep a party in the same room for every night requested. Its child pricing skips a year, free under three and $25 from four, and rates exclude the 13 per cent tax.

Where not to book in Costa Rica

Three things catch families out in Costa Rica, and the hotels say so themselves if you read far enough. The first is the sea. The US State Department warns that rip currents are very dangerous and that most beaches have no lifeguards, and lists lifeguard presence at only six Pacific beaches, Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio among them. Arenas del Mar advises against swimming at its own beaches, while Capitan Suizo calls its end of Tamarindo the calmest in the bay. Ask the hotel, as the State Department advises. The second is room size. Nayara Gardens and Capitan Suizo both cap rooms at three guests, so a family of four needs two, and only Capitan Suizo offers a connecting door. The third is the adults-only corner. Parador keeps three of its five pools for adults, Four Seasons does the same at its beach club, RIU limits its swim-up bars to over-18s and Si Como No has an adults-only area. And if Manuel Antonio National Park is the reason for the trip, avoid Tuesday: it opens Wednesday to Monday, 7 am to 3 pm, and sells tickets only online through the national parks service.

When to book

Pick the region by the month, because Costa Rica's rain does not fall on one calendar. The national weather service gives the Pacific side and the Central Valley a dry season from December to March, with April as the turn, a wet season from May to October and a short drier spell in July and August. The Zona Norte around Arenal moves the other way in November, into a rainy stretch running through December and January, just as Guanacaste dries out. Arenas del Mar puts the wettest months at September and October. So Guanacaste and Manuel Antonio suit the Christmas and February holidays, and Arenal is the place to expect showers then, which Arenal Observatory Lodge itself says happen year-round. Book transfers early too: RIU requires its airport transfer to be booked at least seven days ahead, and Finca Rosa Blanca warns it may not keep a party in the same room for every night.

Family hotels in Costa Rica: FAQ

The questions parents ask most when booking a room here.

Guanacaste is the easiest start, because it has both supervised kids clubs on this list and the shortest transfers: Four Seasons is 40 minutes from Liberia airport and Capitan Suizo about an hour. Manuel Antonio suits wildlife lovers but is about three hours by road from San Jose. Arenal adds hot springs, three hours or more from either airport. The Central Valley works as a first night, 20 minutes to an hour from SJO.

Start with the sea. The US State Department says rip currents cause several drownings of US tourists each year and most beaches have no lifeguards. It warns about adventure sports such as zip lining and rafting, and says the Ministry of Health lists approved operators. At the hotels, check who counts as a child, from 0 to 8 at Parador to 3 to 12 at Peace Lodge, and whether the 13 per cent tax is in the rate.

Tamarindo has the strongest case on published facts. Capitan Suizo describes the currents there as gentle and the beach as flat, with the calmest waves at its end of the bay, and the US State Department lists Tamarindo Beach among the few with lifeguard presence. Manuel Antonio is also on that list, but Arenas del Mar advises against swimming at its two beaches there. Playa Flamingo's own resort describes waves suited to body-surfing.

From about five, if you go by the operators' own rules. Both kids clubs here start at four. Sky Adventures, a zip-line operator at Arenal, sets a minimum age of five and a minimum height of 1.10 metres. Arenas del Mar says nearby activities suit children over six best, and horse riding at Mistico's hanging bridges starts at ten. Babies are still easy at the right hotel: Nayara Gardens and Four Seasons both provide cribs, and Nayara's are free.

On written family policy, Four Seasons Resort Peninsula Papagayo leads, with a free kids club for 4 to 12, a teen centre for 10 to 18, free meals for under-fives and rooms published for two adults and two children. Arenas del Mar follows, with naturalist guides, cribs on request and a written plan for families of five. For an all-inclusive, Hotel Riu Guanacaste has RIU Land and a water park. Arenal Observatory Lodge is the value choice.

Two of the twelve checked. Four Seasons runs Kids For All Seasons for ages 4 to 12, free to guests, with a teen centre for 10 to 18 from noon to 8 pm. Hotel Riu Guanacaste runs RIU Land, which the brand sets at 4 to 12, with a children's pool, slides and a playground. Nayara Gardens says outright that it has no formal kids club, and The Springs says its river centre has no lifeguards or babysitters.

It depends on the side of the mountains. The national weather service gives the Pacific coast and the Central Valley a wet season from May to October, with November as the turn, and notes a drier spell in July and August. Arenas del Mar names September and October as the wettest months. The Zona Norte around Arenal turns rainy in November, December and January, the months when Guanacaste is drying out, and Arenal Observatory Lodge says showers come all year.
