The Best Beaches in Costa Rica
Costa Rica has two coastlines running on opposite weather calendars: the surf-and-sunset Pacific and the smaller, calmer Caribbean. These eleven beaches are the ones worth building a trip around - ranked, with honest notes on riptides, road access and which months actually work for each coast.
What are the best beaches in Costa Rica?
Playa Manuel Antonio, the sheltered cove inside Manuel Antonio National Park, is Costa Rica's best beach - calm, clear water with sloths and capuchins in the trees behind the sand. Playa Conchal has the clearest water in Guanacaste, Santa Teresa is the surf-town pick, and Punta Uva is the best of the Caribbean side.

The 11 best beaches, ranked

Playa Manuel Antonio
Wildlife & calm swimmingManuel Antonio National Park, central Pacific
The sheltered cove inside the national park is the country's best single beach: calm, clear water in a forested horseshoe with sloths, capuchins and iguanas in the trees directly behind the sand. Entry is capped and tickets must be bought online ahead (the park is closed Tuesdays); the free beach outside the gate, Espadilla Norte, is bigger but carries genuine rip currents.
Best time: December–April for dry-season reliability; be at the gate for opening before the tour groups arrive.

Clear water & snorkellingnear Brasilito, Guanacaste
The sand here is crushed shell, and the water over that pale shelf is the clearest on the northern Pacific coast - the best shore snorkelling in Guanacaste on a calm day. There's no town on the beach and vehicle access is restricted, so most people walk in 15–20 minutes along the sand from Brasilito and carry everything they need.
Best time: December–April: dry season brings the flattest, clearest water over the shell bank.

Surf & food sceneNicoya Peninsula, southwest tip
A dirt-road surf town that became one of the country's most fashionable corners without paving the road: kilometres of beach-break peaks, swell nearly year-round, and a sunset that stops the whole town each evening. The trade-offs are real - dust in dry season, mud in the rains, rips outside the main peaks, and prices well above the national average.
Best time: December–April for dry weather; May–August for glassy morning surf and fewer people.

Calm Caribbean water & slothsnear Puerto Viejo, Caribbean coast
The best swimming beach on the Caribbean side: two coves of clear, usually calm water backed by rainforest, with sloths genuinely common in the beachfront trees. It runs on the opposite calendar to the Pacific - September and October, the Pacific's wettest months, are the Caribbean's driest and flattest. Puerto Viejo, 15 minutes away by bike, supplies the Afro-Caribbean food and nightlife.
Best time: September–October: the Caribbean's dry, flat-sea window; February–March is the secondary calm spell.

Learning to surf & nightlifeGuanacaste, northern Pacific
Costa Rica's most developed beach town and still its best place to learn to surf: a long, forgiving beach break, surf schools every hundred metres, and restaurants steps from the sand. It's busy and touristy - locals joke about 'Tamagringo' - but the infrastructure makes it the easiest first stop, and Las Baulas park across the estuary protects leatherback turtle nesting roughly October–March.
Best time: November–April: dry season with reliable waves; avoid the Christmas–New Year price peak.

Consistent surf & yogaNosara, Nicoya Peninsula
One of the most consistent surf beaches anywhere - it breaks essentially every day of the year - fronting a town that kept construction off the beachfront, so the sand is backed by trees rather than hotels. The vibe is surf-and-yoga rather than party, and at nearby Ostional, olive ridley turtles come ashore in mass arribadas, mostly in the wetter months around the new moon.
Best time: December–April for dry roads and offshore mornings; the surf itself runs year-round.

Families & safe swimmingNicoya Peninsula, Guanacaste
The safest ocean swimming on the Pacific coast: a reef across the mouth of the horseshoe bay knocks the swell down, so the water stays calm and shallow enough for kids - rare in a country of rip currents. The town behind it is small, flat and walkable, with beachfront restaurants and none of Tamarindo's noise.
Best time: December–April dry season; green-season mornings stay swimmable because the reef does the work.
Hotels near Playa SámaraUvita (Marino Ballena)
Whale watching & quiet sandCosta Ballena, southern Pacific
At low tide the sandbar of Marino Ballena National Park uncovers into the shape of a whale's tail - fitting, because this is one of the best humpback-watching coasts anywhere, with southern-hemisphere whales July–October and northern ones December–March. The beach itself is long, forest-backed and quiet; check the tide table or the 'tail' is underwater.
Best time: July–October for peak whale season (go at low tide); it rains, but mornings are usually workable.

Comfort & boat tripsGuanacaste, northern Pacific
The polished option on this coast: a genuinely white-sand bay, calmer than the surf beaches either side, with a modern marina that has made it the sportfishing and boat-trip hub of northern Guanacaste. It's condo-and-resort territory rather than a backpacker town - come for comfort, sunsets and easy boat access, not local colour.
Best time: December–April: dry, calm and clear; May–June keeps the sunsets without the peak rates.
Hotels near Playa FlamingoCahuita (Playa Blanca)
Snorkelling & sloth-spottingCahuita National Park, Caribbean coast
Playa Blanca runs along the edge of Cahuita National Park, so the walk in doubles as a wildlife trail - sloths, howler monkeys and capuchins over the sand - and the village entrance works on donations rather than a fixed fee. Offshore sits one of the country's largest coral reefs; snorkelling it requires a licensed guide, best in the September–October calm.
Best time: September–October: the Caribbean's calm window, when reef visibility is at its best.

Waterfalls & bohemian vibesouthern Nicoya Peninsula
A bohemian village where the jungle meets a string of small coves, with a multi-tier waterfall a 20-minute walk from town - the swimming holes are often safer than the sea here, which carries strong currents on several beaches. It suits travellers who want artsy and low-key; the ferry from Puntarenas via Paquera makes it easier to reach than the map suggests.
Best time: December–January: dry weather while the waterfalls still run full from the rainy season.
