What is the best month to visit Zurich?

July, with September a close and cheaper second. July gives you the warmest weather at around 25°C, the longest evenings and the lake and Limmat at swimming temperature, which is what makes a Zurich summer genuinely different from other European city breaks. September holds much of the warmth, tends to be the clearest month for Alpine views, and costs noticeably less. If you want Christmas markets and skiing instead, December is the alternative peak.

Can you swim in Zurich?

Yes, and it is the defining local pastime from June to September. The lake and the Limmat river are clean enough to swim in, and the city maintains badis - public bathing houses - along both, some of them free. The classic experience is floating down the Limmat from the Flussbad Oberer Letten and getting out further downstream. Water temperatures are comfortable from late June through August. This alone is a strong argument for visiting in summer rather than any other season.

What is nebelmeer and when does it affect Zurich?

Nebelmeer, literally sea of fog, is a persistent low cloud that settles over the Swiss plateau in late autumn and can sit for days at a time, mainly through October and November. It greys out the city and hides the Alps entirely, which is why those months are the weakest for a first visit. The strange upside is that the mountains above it are often in brilliant sunshine, so taking a train or cable car up out of the fog on those days is a genuinely spectacular thing to do.

Yes - it is consistently among the most expensive cities in the world, and there is no cheap season that changes that. Restaurant meals, drinks and hotels all run well above Western European norms. The standard tactics locals and visitors use are lunch menus rather than dinner, picnics assembled from Coop or Migros supermarkets eaten by the lake, and the Zurich Card, which bundles transport with museum entry. Tap water is excellent and the city's fountains are drinkable, which is a small but real saving.

Is Zurich a good base for skiing?

It works well as a gateway rather than a ski town itself. Zurich airport has excellent connections and the Swiss rail network reaches numerous resorts in one to two hours, so a few days in the city followed by a transfer into the Alps is a common and easy pattern. Some smaller areas are reachable as day trips. What Zurich does not offer is slopeside convenience, so if skiing is the main purpose of the trip, base yourself in the mountains and treat the city as a bookend.

How many days do you need in Zurich?

Two days covers the city: the Altstadt old town and the Grossmunster, a walk along the Bahnhofstrasse, the Kunsthaus art museum, and a lake boat or a swim depending on the season. A third day is best spent on a mountain trip - Uetliberg for an easy city view, or the train to Lucerne and Mount Pilatus, which is under an hour away. Zurich is compact and expensive, so it rewards a short, well-planned stay more than a long one.
