When is the best time to visit Zurich?
June to September is the best time to visit Zurich - warm days in the mid-20s°C, long evenings, and the lake and Limmat river warm enough to swim, which is the thing that makes a Zurich summer distinctive. December is the other strong window for Christmas markets and easy access to the Alps for skiing. March to May is pleasant with lower rates. Avoid October and November, when nebelmeer fog settles over the valleys for weeks.

Zurich month by month
Every month rated for weather, crowds and price, so you can match the trip to the month.
| Month | Weather | Crowds | Price | What it's like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 4°C, cold, grey | Moderate | $$$ | Cold and often grey, but the ski resorts are an hour or two away and rates reflect that demand. |
| Feb | 6°C, cold, brightening | Moderate | $$$ | Still cold with good ski conditions nearby. Fasnacht carnival brings parades and masked processions. |
| Mar | 11°C, cool, brighter | Low | $$ | Spring begins and rates ease. Sechselauten in April approaches, and the old town is pleasant to walk again. |
| Apr | 15°C, mild, showers | Moderate | $$ | Blossom along the lake and mild days. Sechselauten burns the Boogg snowman to predict the summer. |
| May | 19°C, mild, pleasant | Moderate | $$ | Lovely walking weather, gardens out and the lake boats running again, before the summer rates arrive. |
| Jun | 23°C, warm, long days | High | $$$ | Summer proper. The badis open, the lake is swimmable and daylight stretches past 9pm. |
| Jul | 25°C, warm, storms | Peak | $$$ | Warmest month, river swimming at its best and the Zuri Fascht or Street Parade filling the city some years. |
| Aug | 25°C, warm, storms | Peak | $$$ | Still peak, with the Street Parade in mid-August drawing enormous crowds. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. |
| Sep | 20°C, mild, clear | Moderate | $$ | Often the clearest month, with warm days, cool nights and the Alps sharply visible. Excellent value. |
| Oct | 14°C, cool, foggy | Low | $$ | Autumn colour, but nebelmeer fog begins settling in the valleys and can grey out days at a time. |
| Nov | 8°C, cold, foggy | Low | $$ | The foggiest, greyest month. Cheap and quiet, but the lake and mountain views often simply are not there. |
| Dec | 5°C, cold, festive | High | $$$ | Christmas markets across the city, lights on Bahnhofstrasse and ski season open nearby. Prices climb. |
When to book Zurich
Find the row that sounds like your trip.
| If you want | Months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The best trip for the money | Mar, Apr, May and Sep | Rated good above without hitting the top price band, so you are not paying peak rates for the conditions. |
| Peak season anyway | Jun, Jul and Aug | Busiest and dearest. This is the window where booking early changes the price, not just what is left. |
| To know what to skip | Nov | Rated off-peak here. The low price is the compensation, not a bargain. |
