Best time to visit Switzerland: FAQ

The timing questions travelers ask most before booking.

The between-season months are cheapest: April to mid-May and November, when hotel rates drop and the crowds are gone. The catch is that most ski lifts and many high-mountain cable cars and hotels close then, so those months suit city and lake trips (Zurich, Lucerne, Geneva, Lugano) far better than mountain ones. For mountain trips at fair prices, June and September beat July-August.

November is the one month that disappoints most visitors: the lifts are shut, the valleys sit under fog and many mountain hotels close entirely. Late April can feel similar. Neither ruins a city break, but if you're coming for the Alps, aim for June-September or the December-March ski season instead. July and August are excellent weather-wise - just expect the biggest crowds and prices.

June to September is the safest window: the Gornergrat railway, Glacier Express connections and viewpoints run at full summer schedules, and the Matterhorn is most often clear in the mornings. September is a favourite for photographers - stable air, golden light and fewer people. The scenic trains run year-round though, and the winter Glacier Express through snowed-in valleys is its own spectacle.

Winter is one of the two right answers, as long as you come for winter things. December to March delivers world-class skiing and snowboarding, sledding runs, thermal spas and festive towns. Non-skiers still get plenty: winter hiking trails, the Jungfraujoch, fondue season and Christmas markets in December. Just book the ski weeks around Christmas, New Year and February half-terms months ahead.

For July-August and the Christmas-New Year and February ski weeks, book three to six months ahead - Switzerland's hotel stock in the famous villages is small and sells out. June and September need less lead time, and the between-season months can be booked weeks out. Zurich (ZRH) and Geneva (GVA) are the main gateways, with fast, frequent trains onward to the mountains.

It varies more by altitude than by month. Lowland cities like Zurich run from around 4°C in January to 25°C in July, with summer thunderstorms. The mountains are 10-15 degrees colder, hold snow from roughly November to May, and can flip from sun to storm in an hour at any time of year. Pack layers whenever you come - a warm June day in Lucerne can be near freezing on the Jungfraujoch.
