The Best Time to Visit Switzerland
Switzerland runs on two seasons that barely overlap: a green summer of hiking trails, lake swims and open mountain passes, and a white winter built for skiing. The months between them are cheap but half-closed. Here's every month rated so you land in the right one.
When is the best time to visit Switzerland?
The best time to visit Switzerland is June to September, when the hiking trails, mountain railways and high passes are all open and the lakes are warm enough to swim. July and August are the peak - busiest and priciest. For skiing, come December to March. The shoulder months of April-May and late October-November are the cheapest, but many cable cars and mountain hotels close between seasons, so check what's open before booking.

| Month | Weather | Crowds | Price | What it's like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 4°C, cold, snowy Alps | High (ski) | $$$ | Deep winter: reliable snow across the ski resorts and crisp, foggy lowlands. Ski prices peak but the slopes are at their best. |
| Feb | 6°C, cold, sunny peaks | High (ski) | $$$ | Prime ski month - longer days, deep base and frequent bluebird mornings. School-holiday weeks fill the big resorts. |
| Mar | 11°C, thawing | Moderate | $$ | Spring skiing up high while the valleys turn green; prices ease as the season winds down through the month. |
| Apr | 15°C, changeable | Low | $ | Between seasons: ski lifts close and summer routes aren't open yet. Cheap and quiet - best for cities and lake towns. |
| May | 19°C, mild, showery | Low | $$ | Green valleys, waterfalls at full blast and low prices, though high trails stay under snow and some lifts are still shut. |
| Jun | 23°C, warm | High | $$$ | Summer opens: most cable cars and passes running, alpine flowers out, long days - and thinner crowds than July. |
| Jul | 25°C, warm, storms | Peak | $$$ | Everything is open and the hiking is superb. The famous spots (Zermatt, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen) are at their busiest. |
| Aug | 24°C, warm, storms | Peak | $$$ | Peak summer continues with warm lakes and full trains; afternoon thunderstorms are normal - start hikes early. |
| Sep | 20°C, clear, crisp | Moderate | $$ | Many locals' favourite: stable clear weather, golden light, open trails and noticeably fewer people. Great value for summer. |
| Oct | 15°C, cool, autumn colour | Low | $$ | Larches turn gold and the crowds vanish, but high lifts start closing mid-month and mountain weather turns fast. |
| Nov | 8°C, gray, fog | Low | $ | The dead month: lifts closed, valleys foggy, many mountain hotels shut. Cheap city breaks are the one good use of it. |
| Dec | 5°C, cold, festive | Moderate then Peak | $$$ | Christmas markets and the start of ski season; snow can be thin early, and the holiday weeks send prices to the year's top. |
