What the bands mean
Rates are shown as bands, not numbers. Every resort here sells through a live booking engine, so a nightly figure would be wrong by the time you read it. The bands come from the starting price each hotel's Trip.com page showed on 3 October 2026, in US dollars: the eleven that showed one ran from 222 to 868. Viceroy Riviera Maya showed no rate, so its band is an estimate from its format and should be checked. Compare like with like: Excellence, Grand Velas, Hotel Xcaret Arte, UNICO and Conrad include food and drink, the rest are room-only or sell a plan on top. Rosewood Mayakoba adds a 15% service charge, 16% IVA and 5% occupancy tax, Etéreo a 16% service charge, and Fairmont Mayakoba a resort fee of USD 38 per adult per night. Fairmont also lists Quintana Roo's government-mandated environmental sanitation fee of USD 1.90 per person per night for guests 13 and over, charged on arrival.

The 12 hotels, and who each one is wrong for
Walking times are to Cancun International Airport (CUN), by road. None of these resorts is a walk from anywhere, so each card gives the drive from the airport as the hotel itself publishes it, in minutes or miles. Where a hotel's own pages give two different figures, both are shown. Read on 3 October 2026.

Where not to book in the Riviera Maya
Three traps catch people booking luxury in the Riviera Maya. The first is the label adults-only: Viceroy Riviera Maya's page title uses it but its FAQ admits guests from 12, Azulik sets it at 13 and Hotel Xcaret Arte at 16, so if you want an over-18 resort, book Excellence Riviera Cancun or UNICO 20°87°, which say 18 in writing. The second is the room type at the big resorts. At Grand Velas, Zen Grand is a jungle area a shuttle ride from the beach, and at Excellence almost every standard suite faces the pools rather than the sea. The third is the add-ons. Room-only rates at Rosewood and Etéreo carry service charges of 15% and 16%, Fairmont Mayakoba adds a resort fee of USD 38 per adult per night, and Fairmont's guest page lists a government-mandated Quintana Roo environmental sanitation fee of USD 1.90 per person per night for guests 13 and over.
When to book
Book for the dry season and plan around the seaweed. Grand Velas gives the dry season as November to April and Chablé Maroma names December to April as the best time to visit. Summer is the low season, by Viceroy's own FAQ, and it is also when sargassum peaks: the University of South Florida's satellite bulletin of 30 June 2026 reported record June levels in the Caribbean, while its 30 September bulletin said amounts were falling and would keep falling until possibly November. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaking around 10 September, according to the US National Hurricane Center. If you travel at Christmas, note that Rosewood Mayakoba does not sell its meal plan over the festive season.
