What is the cheapest time to visit Cancún?

The cheapest months are the low season of May-June and September-November, once the winter and spring-break crowds have gone. September and October are the very cheapest - but they're the peak of hurricane season and often the heaviest for seaweed, so you trade price for reliability. For low prices with better weather, target May, early June or the second half of November before the holiday surge.

When is hurricane season in Cancún?

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk in September and early October. Most summer and autumn trips see nothing worse than short afternoon storms, and a direct hit in any given week is uncommon - but if you're travelling in the September-October peak, keep your itinerary flexible and buy travel insurance. December to April sits safely outside the season.

When is the seaweed (sargassum) worst in Cancún?

Sargassum seaweed is typically heaviest from May to October, and lightest from December to April. Amounts vary year to year and beach to beach - the Caribbean-facing shores get more than the sheltered bays of Isla Mujeres and the north-facing beaches. Big resorts rake their beaches daily in season. If a pristine white-sand beach is the priority, come in the winter dry season.

What months should you avoid in Cancún?

September and October carry the highest hurricane risk, the most rain and often the heaviest seaweed, so they're the months to approach with caution. The other stretch to plan around is the late-December holiday peak, when prices spike and resorts sell out. For great weather without either issue, come between January and April - just note that March brings the spring-break crowds.

For the December-April high season - especially Christmas-New Year and the March spring-break weeks - book flights and resorts three to five months ahead, as the best all-inclusive deals sell out early. For the summer and autumn low season, four to six weeks is usually enough. Flights land at Cancún International (CUN), the main gateway for the whole Riviera Maya.
