Are Dubai resorts with a private pool worth it?
Only if the pool is chilled. Al Maha gives every suite a temperature-controlled pool in a desert conservation reserve and is the clearest yes. On the Palm, One&Only and Anantara both sell genuine pool villas. Ignore all of them if you are visiting in winter, when the resort's main pool is pleasant and the premium buys you privacy rather than usable water.

On this page most of the answers are that there is no route at all, which is the honest result rather than a gap: private-pool resorts in Dubai sit on the Palm, on the coast between transport lines, or an hour inland in the desert, and none of those places is served by rail. That is worth knowing before you book a honeymoon, because it means every dinner outside the resort is a booked car in both directions.

- The catch: The resort faces back at the skyline rather than out to open sea, so the view is the city rather than the horizon. Whether that is a feature depends entirely on you.

- The catch: It is a large resort rather than an intimate one, so the private villa is private and the rest of the property is busy, particularly in the school holidays.

- Wrong for: Anyone who wants a beach. It is inland desert, and the nearest sea is back in the city.
- The catch
- The catch: It sits in ordinary desert rather than a conservation reserve, so you get the dunes and the quiet but not the wildlife that justifies Al Maha's rate.
West Crescent, Palm Jumeirah
Raffles The Palm Dubai

- The catch: It is very large and can feel empty in the low season and busy in the high one, and the far end of the West Crescent is a long drive from anywhere.

- Wrong for: Anyone whose priority is the private pool itself. This is a beach hotel first, and the pool suites are a small part of it.
- The catch
- The catch: The Burj Al Arab view is the reason many people book, and it is only from certain rooms. Confirm you are getting one before you pay for it.
Where not to book in Dubai
The premium on a private pool is worth paying in some months and close to wasted in others, and nobody selling you one will say so. From November to March the resort's main pool is pleasant, uncrowded outside the peak weeks and perfectly usable, so what the villa upgrade buys is privacy and a terrace rather than water you could not otherwise get. From June to September it is the reverse: the shared pools are crowded with everyone hiding from the heat, and an unshaded private pool that is not temperature-controlled sits at bath temperature and is unpleasant by mid-morning. This is why Dubai resorts advertise chilled or temperature-controlled pools as a feature, and it is the single question to ask before you book. Two further traps. A listing that says private pool covers everything from a genuine swimming pool to a plunge you cannot swim in, so ask for the dimensions rather than the photograph. And every resort on this page is car-dependent, with no walking route to a station, so a week of dinners outside the property is a real line in the budget before you have eaten anything.
When to book
Pool-villa stock is small at every one of these properties, which makes it behave differently from ordinary rooms. The winter weeks book out months ahead and there is no substitutable inventory when they do, so for anything between November and March, and especially for New Year, book three to four months out. Honeymoon dates concentrate further, because everyone wants the same handful of villas. The counter-intuitive advice is to look hard at May and October: rates have dropped from the winter peak, the heat has not yet reached its worst or has just broken, and a chilled private pool is at its most useful precisely then. Ramadan dates move each year and change the atmosphere of a resort stay, so check them before committing.
