How much are Doge's Palace tickets and is skip-the-line worth it?
The standard ticket is 35 EUR full and 15 EUR reduced, and it is not a Doge's Palace ticket at all: it is the combined I Musei di Piazza San Marco ticket, which also covers the Museo Correr, the National Archaeological Museum and the monumental rooms of the Marciana library. There is an online rate of 30 EUR, but only if you buy more than 30 days before your visit date, so it is a planning discount rather than a booking discount. The audioguide app is included, not an extra. The thing that actually ruins mornings: a San Marco ticket with no specific entry slot only admits you to the palace from 12:00 onward.
The 12:00 rule nobody warns you about
The palace's own notice is explicit: holders of an I Musei di Piazza San Marco ticket without a specific entry time can only enter the Doge's Palace from 12:00. If you have booked an untimed combined ticket and turned up at 09:30 expecting a quiet morning, you will be turned away until noon, which is precisely when the square is at its worst. A timed ticket is the fix, and it costs the same. Book the slot, not just the ticket.
What skip-the-line actually skips
Skip-the-line is sold as though it removes every wait. It does not, and knowing which queue it removes is the difference between a smooth visit and standing outside anyway.

This is the one an advance ticket genuinely removes. On-site desks also stop selling between 30 and 60 minutes before closing, so a late arrival without a ticket can find the desk shut while the museum is technically open.

An advance ticket does not conjure an early slot. Without a specific time on the ticket you are held until 12:00 regardless of what you paid.

Bag checks happen at the venue entrance and no ticket type skips them. Suitcases, trolleys and anything over one linear metre measured across three sides are refused entry altogether, so leave luggage before you come rather than at the door.

Covers: Doge's Palace, Museo Correr, National Archaeological Museum and the monumental rooms of the Biblioteca Marciana. The Correr has one entrance that leads through to the other two.
Who it suits: Almost everyone. This is the only way to see the palace, so the question is which version you buy rather than whether.

Who it suits: Anyone who plans more than a month ahead. Note the reduced rate is 15 EUR either way, so this only benefits full-price adults, and buying at 29 days does not count.
Secret Itineraries guided tour

Covers: The tour plus the same four museums. About 1 hour 15 minutes, advance booking required, minimum 2 and maximum 25 people, from about age 6.
Who it suits: People who want the prisons, the interrogation rooms and the working guts of the building rather than the state rooms. Fixed departures only: in English at 10:00, 11:30 and 13:00, with the 13:00 moving to 09:30 from 15 June to 31 August. Not suitable if you have mobility problems, claustrophobia or vertigo, or are pregnant.
Museum Pass
50 EUR
25 EUR reduced
Covers: Twelve civic museums including the Doge's Palace, valid six months, one admission each, no reservation required. The Clock Tower is not included.
Who it suits: Only worth it if you will genuinely visit three or more of the twelve. For a single Venice trip focused on the palace it is 15 EUR of insurance against museums you will probably not reach.

Which door you actually use
The public entrance is the Porta del Frumento on Piazzetta San Marco, the lagoon-facing side under the arcade. The Porta della Carta, the ornate gate people photograph and head towards, is not the visitor entrance. The address is San Marco 1, and the nearest vaporetto stops are Vallaresso and San Zaccaria on lines 1, 4.1, 5.1 and 5.2, or Giardinetti on line 2.
How long you really have
Opening is 09:00 to 19:00 from 1 April to 31 October with last admission at 18:00, and 09:00 to 18:00 from 1 November to 31 March with last admission at 17:00. Closing procedures start 30 minutes before the stated closing time, so the real end of your visit is earlier than the headline hour suggests. Budget two hours for the palace alone and more if you are doing the Correr on the same ticket.
One entry, no coming back
Each ticket allows a single admission and is not reusable. Once you leave the museum you cannot re-enter, which matters because the combined ticket tempts people to split the palace and the Correr across a lunch break. Do the palace in one go.
The audioguide is already paid for
The MUVE app audioguide is included in the ticket price. The app is a free download, you scan a QR code inside the venue, and the check-in lasts six hours. It runs in Italian, English, French, Spanish and German, with Korean also available for the Doge's Palace. If a reseller offers you an audioguide as a paid extra on top of entry, you are being sold something you already own.
Groups and radio receivers
Non-organised groups of more than ten people must use whisper radio receivers at 1 EUR per person. And if you have booked a guided tour, arriving more than 15 minutes after the start time forfeits it outright with no transfer to a later slot.
Dated notices, check before you go
- Prices rose on 1 January 2026. Guides still quoting 30 EUR for entry or 40 EUR for the Museum Pass are working from the 2025 list.
- Extended evening hours run every Friday and Saturday from 1 May to 26 September 2026, when the palace stays open to 23:00 with last entry at 22:00. That is a dated 2026 notice, not a permanent arrangement.
- Veronese's Ratto d'Europa is away for restoration. A reproduction hangs in its usual place and the original is visible to the public in the Sala del Liago while work goes on.
Is it worth it?
Yes, and the Secret Itineraries tour is the one upgrade worth the money.
The state rooms are enormous and gilded and slightly numbing after an hour. What makes the building extraordinary is the machinery underneath the pageantry, and that is exactly what the Secret Itineraries route covers: the chancellery, the interrogation rooms, the lead-roofed cells. At 40 EUR it is 5 EUR more than standard entry and it includes the same four museums, so the marginal cost of the tour itself is small. Book it, because it takes a maximum of 25 people and it sells out well before the general ticket does.
When to skip it: Skip the palace entirely if you have one day in Venice and you have never walked the city. Venice itself is the attraction and the palace is a two-hour indoor commitment plus a combined ticket you will only half use. Skip the Museum Pass unless you will visit three or more civic museums. And skip any reseller charging extra for an audioguide that comes free with the ticket.
