Since 2021 the large ships have been banned from the in-city terminals and sail from the mainland instead. Book the wrong side of the lagoon and you are an hour and a taxi from your ship.

The 7 hotels, and who each one is wrong for

Walking times are to the Marittima cruise terminal. Walking times are real pedestrian routes measured through OpenStreetMap foot routing at 4.5 km/h, with one Venice-specific correction that matters more here than anywhere else we have measured. The router will happily send you across a canal on a ferry and count the crossing as walking, which silently turns a boat ride into a stroll. Every route below was re-run with water crossings rejected, so where a figure appears it is genuinely on foot. Where a hotel cannot be reached on foot at all, the card says so rather than printing a number.

    Anyone whose trip is really about Venice. Piazzale Roma is a bus and taxi interchange, and it is the least atmospheric address in the historic centre.

    You are sleeping beside the city's road head. It is the most practical location in Venice for a cruise and it looks like a transport terminus, because it is one.

Where not to book in Venice

The mistake that actually costs people their ship is booking for the wrong port. Venice has not had a single cruise port since 2021: Decree Law 103 of that year closed the Giudecca Canal to vessels over 25,000 gross tons, which is most of the fleet, so the in-city terminals at Marittima, San Basilio and Santa Marta now take only smaller ships while everything larger sails from Fusina or the Liguria and Lombardia quays at Porto Marghera on the mainland, with some calls at Chioggia. These are not near each other. There is a second trap at Fusina itself, where two separate facilities share the name: Terminal Fusina is a car park and passenger ferry to the Zattere, while the cruise ships use Venice Ro-Port MoS on Via dell'Elettronica. Arriving at the wrong one is an easy mistake and an expensive one. Finally, no vaporetto and no public bus serves the Fusina cruise terminal, so from the historic centre you need a booked car, a taxi or your cruise line's own shuttle, and quoted taxi fares to Piazzale Roma ran from about 41 to 60 euro across the sources checked in August 2026.

When to book

Cruise dates concentrate demand in a way ordinary city breaks do not, because everybody on your ship wants a bed on the same night. For a summer Saturday sailing, book the night before as soon as your cruise is confirmed, and expect the Piazzale Roma cluster to go first because it is the obvious choice. Carnival in February and the Biennale season, which runs to 22 November 2026 this year, both lift rates across the city independently of the cruise calendar. If your dates are fixed and your ship is large, check your terminal before you book anything, because a mainland sailing turns the whole shortlist over.

Best hotels in Venice: FAQ

The questions travellers ask most when picking a hotel here.

There is more than one, and which applies to you depends on the size of your ship. Marittima, San Basilio and Santa Marta sit at the western end of the historic centre and now take only vessels up to 25,000 gross tons, a limit set by Decree Law 103 of 2021 when the Giudecca Canal was closed to larger ships. Anything bigger sails from the mainland, either from Fusina, officially Venice Ro-Port MoS on Via dell'Elettronica, or from the Liguria and Lombardia quays at Porto Marghera, with some calls going to Chioggia. Check your terminal on your cruise documents before you book a hotel, because the two options are on opposite sides of the lagoon.

Take the People Mover, the automated shuttle that runs Piazzale Roma to Marittima Terminal Crociere to Tronchetto. A one-way ticket is 1.50 euro and is valid 75 minutes, and the operator puts the Tronchetto to city run at 4 minutes. It runs from 07:00 to 23:00 on weekdays year-round, and on Sundays and holidays 08:00 to 22:00 from April to October and 08:30 to 21:00 from November to March. The alternative is a 25-minute walk from Piazzale Roma, which is flat and perfectly pleasant without luggage and not something to attempt with a large case on sailing morning.

For the in-city terminals, the cluster around Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia station in the Santa Croce sestiere. Hotel Santa Chiara stands on Piazzale Roma itself, Hotel Olimpia and Hotel Papadopoli are three minutes away, and Hotel Carlton and Hotel Antiche Figure are five minutes from the station. For the mainland terminals at Fusina and Marghera, none of those help, and you want a Mestre hotel on the same side of the water instead.

To Marittima, yes, if you are staying at the Piazzale Roma end and travelling light. It is a measured 25 minutes on foot from Piazzale Roma and about 27 to 29 minutes from the Santa Croce hotels here, on flat ground. With a suitcase, take the People Mover instead. To Fusina or Porto Marghera, no. They are on the mainland across the lagoon and there is no walking route from the historic centre at all.

Work backwards from your terminal rather than from a general rule. From a Piazzale Roma hotel to Marittima, the People Mover makes this a 15-minute exercise including the walk to the platform, so leaving 90 minutes before your boarding window closes is generous. From the historic centre to Fusina it is an entirely different problem: there is no public transport to that terminal, so you need a car booked in advance or the cruise line's shuttle, and you should treat it as an hour door to door plus whatever your booking requires.

Most will, and it is worth confirming in writing when you book rather than assuming, because it changes what you can do with your last morning. This matters more in Venice than in most ports: check-out is usually late morning, boarding is often mid-afternoon, and there is nowhere convenient to sit with four suitcases in a city where every route crosses stepped bridges. If your hotel will not hold bags, the deposit at Santa Lucia station is the fallback and it is a short walk from every in-city hotel on this list.
