The Best Family Resorts in the Midwest

The search results for Midwest family resorts are full of all-inclusive promises, so this page tested them. Eighteen resorts, fourteen readable on their own domains, checked on 6 September 2026. Three sell a rate where lodging and meals come in one price, and every one of the three is an old lake lodge. Not one of the waterpark resorts does.

Facts rechecked by Fourteen of the eighteen resorts were read on their own domains on 6 September 2026, and every host referenced is an operator domain or a government one. Four are absent rather than estimated: both Kalahari resorts and Wilderness Resort returned HTTP 403 to every path and every user agent, and Kalahari's own robots.txt permits everything, so this is a bot wall rather than a crawl rule, and not one number was taken from an aggregator to fill the gap. Chula Vista could be read only on its homepage. Rates and fees change, and one on this page changes on a known date, so check the operator's own page before booking.

In Brief

Are there all-inclusive family resorts in the Midwest?

Three of the eighteen tested, and the pattern is the whole answer: all three are lake lodges, and none of the waterpark resorts sells one. White Birch Lodge in Elk Rapids, Michigan runs a full American Plan at $2,445 per person per week. Madden's on Gull Lake sells a modified plan with breakfast and dinner. Breezy Point includes breakfast and one dinner. Read the gratuity line before you book: White Birch and Madden's both exclude it in writing, and only Breezy Point states that its rate includes the 15 per cent service charge.

Key takeaways

  • 3 of 18 sell a genuinely meal-inclusive rate, and all three are lake lodges rather than waterpark resorts.
  • White Birch runs nine weeks a year, Saturday to Saturday, 13 June to 15 August 2026.
  • Crystal Mountain publishes kids 17 and under staying free, the highest free age in this whole build, and only in winter.
  • Great Wolf's Chicago lodge is in Gurnee, Illinois, forty-five miles from the city.

What the rate covers, and what it does not

Each row below is what the operator publishes on its own site. Where a resort names a charge without giving its size, the row says so rather than guessing, and where two of an operator's own pages disagree, both readings are recorded. Nothing here comes from a booking aggregator.

What the bands mean

Two things move the real price here and neither is the room rate. The first is the mandatory fee, which in this region is more often a percentage than a flat sum: Grand View Lodge charges 10 per cent of the nightly rate with no cap, and Cragun's has published an 8 per cent resort fee that begins on 1 January 2027. The second is the gratuity, which two of the three meal-inclusive rates exclude in writing.

The 14 resorts, and the plan to book at each

  • Elk Rapids, on Elk Lake in northern Michigan

    White Birch Lodge

    €€€
Rated 4.8 out of 5 on Google Maps from 85 reviews, as of October 2026
    Best all round

A family lake lodge on Elk Lake that runs a genuine full American Plan, which almost nothing else in the Midwest does. It is also the reason this page exists: a small operator outranking the aggregators on this keyword, because it publishes what it actually sells.

    Room to book
A weekly Saturday to Saturday booking, which is the only way it sells
    Children eating
Under 3 free, and children aged 3 to 12 at half price on the weekly rate
    Right for
A family that wants one price and one week on a lake.
    Wrong for
Anyone travelling outside high summer, or for fewer than seven nights.
    The catch
The activity the lodge is famous for is not in the all-inclusive price. It describes itself as one of the only resorts in the nation offering full-service waterskiing, wakeboarding and tubing, and then charges separately for it. It also runs just nine weeks a year, Saturday to Saturday, between 13 June and 15 August 2026.
  • Gull Lake, Brainerd, Minnesota

    Madden's on Gull Lake

    €€€€
Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,015 reviews, as of October 2026

A large Brainerd Lakes resort with golf, a beach and a modified American Plan that includes breakfast and dinner. It publishes what its packages contain in detail and refuses to publish what any of them cost.

    Room to book
A package rather than a room; the accommodation pages carry no maximum occupancy
    Children eating
Only inside one dated package: ages 12 and under, up to two children, on the MEA Fall Break weekend with a three-night minimum
    Right for
A family that will ring for a quote and stay a week.
    Wrong for
Anyone trying to compare prices online.
    The catch
Every package page ends with a telephone number instead of a rate, and the accommodation pages publish no maximum occupancy. A parent cannot price this resort or check that a room fits them without making a call, which in a market where competitors publish both is a real cost.
  • Pelican Lake, Breezy Point, Minnesota

    Breezy Point Resort

    €€
Rated 4.4 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,398 reviews, as of October 2026

The third and last meal-inclusive rate in this set, and the only one of the three that puts the service charge inside the price rather than beside it.

    Room to book
A Getaway Package, though read the occupancy figures carefully
    Right for
A family that wants meals in the price without the gratuity surprise.
    Wrong for
A family of four trying to budget from the website.
    The catch
The meal packages are priced per person with no published child rate, so a family of two adults and two children pricing a summer Getaway Package at $345 per person cannot tell from the site whether the children cost $345 each or something less. It also publishes a two-bedroom unit holding ten against a three-bedroom holding eight, on its own how-many-can-stay field.
  • Gull Lake, Brainerd, Minnesota

    Cragun's Resort on Gull Lake

    €€
Rated 4.3 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,105 reviews, as of October 2026
    Best value

A Brainerd Lakes resort with a beach, golf and free family programming rather than childcare, and the only property here that publishes a fee which does not exist yet.

    Room to book
A lodge room rather than a cabin, if you want the paid early check-in
    Right for
A family that wants a lake week without a package price.
    Wrong for
Anyone arriving early in the day.
    The catch
Check-in is 5pm, the latest of any resort here, and getting in earlier is a paid product at $50 for lodge rooms only. Its rule for a family is also worth reading in advance: if anyone in the room is under 18, someone over 21 must be there too.
  • Nisswa, on Gull Lake, Minnesota

    Grand View Lodge

    €€€
Rated 4.6 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,114 reviews, as of October 2026

A historic Gull Lake resort with the widest range of lodging here, from lodge rooms to large private homes, and the most expensive mandatory fee structure in the set.

    Room to book
A cabin or private home if the group is large enough to spread the percentage fee
    Right for
A family that wants a full-service lake resort with a spa attached.
    Wrong for
Anyone booking the most expensive room in peak season.
    The catch
The 10 per cent resort fee has no cap, so it rises with the room. On a $500 peak-season night that is $50 plus tax, more than double Grand Traverse's flat $20.95, and the family paying the most for the room pays the most for the fee as well.
  • Wisconsin Dells, though the lodge's postal address is in Baraboo

    Great Wolf Lodge Wisconsin Dells

    €€
Rated 4.1 out of 5 on Google Maps from 9,071 reviews, as of October 2026

The original Great Wolf, with the indoor waterpark included in the room rate and free daily programming through the lodge. Read the address before you book anything else around it.

    Room to book
A standard suite rather than an accessible one, unless you need it; see the drawback
    Children eating
Day passes are free for children aged 2 and under; no children-stay-free age is published for the room
    Right for
A family that wants the waterpark inside the building.
    Wrong for
Anyone expecting the waterpark to be guests-only.
    The catch
The waterpark included in your room rate is on sale to the public by the day and by the season, so you queue beside families who did not pay lodge prices. Note also that the accessible suites hold one or two fewer people than their identically named standard twins, because the layout swaps a sleeper sofa for a chair, and that appears only as an occupancy attribute in the booking widget and nowhere in the prose.
  • Gurnee, Illinois, forty-five miles north of Chicago

Great Wolf Lodge Chicago / Gurnee

    €€
Rated 4.1 out of 5 on Google Maps from 9,606 reviews, as of October 2026

The same product an hour north of Chicago, and the name is the thing to check: it is in Gurnee, Illinois, forty-five miles from the city a family thinks they are booking.

    Room to book
A standard suite; the accessible suites hold fewer people
    Right for
A family doing a Chicago trip with a waterpark day bolted on.
    Wrong for
A family without a car who booked it as a Chicago hotel.
    The catch
The word Chicago in the name is doing a lot of work: the lodge is in Gurnee, forty-five miles from the Loop, which is a real drive with children after a day in the city. As at the Dells lodge, the accessible suites hold fewer people than their standard twins and nothing in the prose warns you.
  • Thompsonville, northern Michigan

    Crystal Mountain

    €€€

A northern Michigan mountain resort with skiing in winter and golf in summer, and the single most generous published family rate in this whole build, filed under the season most families do not book.

    Room to book
Lodging rather than a rental home, because the free-kids rate is for lodging guests
    Children eating
Kids 17 and under stay free anytime in winter, for lodging guests
    Right for
A family with teenagers, travelling in winter.
    Wrong for
A family who want the water feature and are coming in January.
    The catch
The two best things it publishes cancel each other out. Kids 17 and under stay free in winter only, and the free water feature it includes is an outdoor Water Playground. The season that gives you the free children is the season that closes the water.
  • Acme, near Traverse City, Michigan

    Grand Traverse Resort and Spa

    €€€
Rated 4.2 out of 5 on Google Maps from 4,464 reviews, as of October 2026

A large resort near Traverse City with the cleanest same-operator contradiction in this set: it publishes its resort fee amount on one page and what the fee buys on another, and the two lists are different lengths.

    Room to book
A tower room or a condominium, depending on whether you want the kitchen
    Right for
A family that wants a full-service resort near a real town.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants the fee to be unambiguous.
    The catch
The resort's own two pages cannot agree on what the $20.95 nightly fee buys, and the difference is not trivial: it is the outdoor pools and the Beach Club. Beyond that, housekeeping is on request only and a microwave is not standard.
  • Boyne Falls, northern Michigan

    Boyne Mountain Resort

    €€€
Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 6,893 reviews, as of October 2026

A four-season Michigan resort with skiing, golf and the Avalanche Bay indoor waterpark, which is the thing to read carefully because it is not in the room rate.

    Room to book
A room inside the lodging tiers that carry the better waterpark discount
    Children eating
Children 2 and younger are free for the waterpark day pass only, not for lodging
    Right for
A family that came for the mountain rather than the water.
    Wrong for
A family who assumed the waterpark came with the room.
    The catch
At Boyne the waterpark is not in the room rate and for most guests neither is the pool. A family books lodging and then buys Avalanche Bay passes for every person including the adult who is only supervising, and the size of the guest discount is published two different ways by the resort itself.
  • Ridgedale, on Table Rock Lake, Missouri

    Big Cedar Lodge

    €€€€
Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 3,773 reviews, as of October 2026

An Ozarks resort on Table Rock Lake with a wide estate of lodges, cabins and attractions, and an access structure a family needs to understand before booking rather than after.

    Room to book
Whichever lodging area carries the pool and the park access you actually want
    Right for
A family that will read the lodging tiers properly first.
    Wrong for
Anyone booking on the brand name alone.
    The catch
Big Cedar sells one brand and runs six access tiers. The pool a family can use, the park they can enter and the per-vehicle gate fee they pay all depend on which lodging area their booking landed in, and two of those areas come with no pool at all.
  • Branson, above Table Rock Lake, Missouri

Chateau on the Lake Resort Spa

    €€€

A Branson resort above Table Rock Lake, and the clearest published fee in this set, in the sense that it tells you the number and then does not tell you what it covers.

    Room to book
A lake-view room, which is the reason to be here
    Right for
A family that wants a full-service hotel in Branson with a view.
    Wrong for
    Anyone counting the mandatory charges.
    The catch
The $28 resort fee does not cover parking, so the genuine floor is $43 a night before tax, and the fee's own description ends in and more rather than a list of what you get. There is also no kids club of any kind and no published children's rate.
  • French Lick, southern Indiana

    French Lick Resort

    €€

Two historic hotels and a spa in southern Indiana, and the only property in this set with genuinely supervised, priced childcare, which it switches off at exactly the wrong time of year.

    Room to book
Either of the two hotels, depending on whether you want the grand or the practical one
    Right for
A family that wants an evening off, outside the holidays.
    Wrong for
Anyone booking childcare for a Christmas trip.
    The catch
The one supervised childcare product anywhere in this set is switched off for the two months families most want it. If an evening off is why you are booking French Lick, do not book it in November or December.
  • Wisconsin Dells

    Chula Vista Resort

    €
Rated 3.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 8,276 reviews, as of October 2026

A Wisconsin Dells waterpark resort, and the only one in the set that refuses day passes outright, which for a family is a genuine advantage worth naming.

    Room to book
Any room, but plan the first and last day around the times below
    Right for
A family who want a waterpark without the day-trip crowds.
    Wrong for
    Anyone booking a single night.
    The catch
Check-out is 10:30, the earliest in this set, and waterpark access on arrival day does not start until noon even if you pre-register. On a one-night stay that is a very narrow window for the thing you came for.

Where not to book in the Midwest

Four traps. First, the address: Great Wolf's Wisconsin Dells lodge is postally in Baraboo, and its Chicago lodge is in Gurnee, Illinois, forty-five miles from the city. Second, the upgrade that shrinks: Breezy Point publishes a two-bedroom holding ten against a three-bedroom holding eight, and at both Great Wolf lodges every accessible suite holds one or two fewer people than its identically named standard twin, because the layout swaps a sleeper sofa for a chair. Third, the percentage fee: Grand View charges 10 per cent of the nightly rate with no cap, and Cragun's has published an 8 per cent resort fee starting 1 January 2027 that a family booking now for next year will meet. Fourth, Honey Creek Resort in Moravia, Iowa is not listed above because its waterpark is closed with no published reopening date, its largest lodge room sleeps four, and its own site simultaneously says reservations are open and opening soon. Ring before booking that one.

When to book

The lake lodges sell by the week and the good weeks go early: White Birch runs only nine Saturday-to-Saturday weeks between 13 June and 15 August 2026. The waterpark resorts sell by the night and swing on school holidays rather than the season. If a package price matters to you, note that two of the best resorts here quote only by telephone, so build a call into your planning rather than expecting to compare online.

Family resorts in the Midwest: FAQ

The questions parents ask most before paying for a package here.

Three of the eighteen tested sell a rate where lodging and meals come in one price, and the pattern matters more than the list. All three are lake lodges: White Birch Lodge in Elk Rapids, Michigan on a full American Plan at $2,445 per person per week, Madden's on Gull Lake on a modified plan with breakfast and dinner, and Breezy Point with breakfast and one dinner. Not one of the waterpark resorts sells a meal-inclusive rate, which is the opposite of what the search results imply.

Usually not, and the operators say so in writing. White Birch states that gratuity is not included, and Madden's prints gratuities are not included on every package page. Only Breezy Point states that its rate includes the 15 per cent service charge. On a week-long stay for a family that difference runs to a meaningful sum, so read the line before you compare two prices that look similar.

Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville, Michigan, on the published rate alone: kids 17 and under stay free anytime in winter for lodging guests, which is the highest published free-stay age found anywhere in this series. The catch is honest and worth stating: the free-kids rate applies in winter, and the water feature the resort includes free is an outdoor Water Playground, so the season that gives you the free teenagers is the season that closes the water.

It depends, and this is the question that costs families the most. At both Great Wolf lodges and at Chula Vista the waterpark is in the room rate. At Boyne Mountain it is not: Avalanche Bay passes are bought separately for every person, including the adult who is only supervising, and the resort publishes its guest discount two different ways, as 10 per cent on the waterpark FAQ and as up to 45 per cent off from $30 on the lodging page. Chula Vista is the only resort here that refuses day passes entirely, calling itself strictly guest exclusive, which means a quieter waterpark for the price.

Some do and the structure differs more than the amount. Grand View Lodge charges 10 per cent of the nightly rate with no cap, so it grows with the room. Chateau on the Lake charges a flat $28 a night, which does not cover parking, taking the real floor to $43. Grand Traverse charges a flat $20.95 and publishes two different lists of what it buys. Cragun's has published an 8 per cent resort fee that begins on 1 January 2027, replacing a credit card surcharge, so a family booking now for next summer will meet a charge that does not exist today. Crystal Mountain names a service fee, a sales tax and an assessment and prices none of them.

In Wisconsin, which has the greatest concentration of them, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection does. The state requires a licence for every public pool and water attraction, and its ATCP 76 rules require a named certified operator for any water attraction, a requirement extended since 24 September 2023 to any pool that has had two reinspections in three years. It is the clearest published safety regime of any state in this set.
