The Best Theme Parks in the Midwest

Every list of Midwest theme parks ranks them by feel. None of them tells you whether your 42-inch child can actually ride anything. This one does: 315 height rows read off operator ride pages on 6 September 2026, including the 82 that publish a second, lower minimum when an adult rides too, and the 49 that publish a maximum height as well.

In Brief

Which Midwest theme park is best with children?

Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana, on the published evidence. It has the highest proportion of rides with an accompanied-rider option of any park here, it publishes a $76.99 gate price and free admission for children three and under, and its parking, soft drinks and sunscreen are free. Cedar Point has by far the most rides, 82 with published heights, but it also caps 23 of them with a maximum height. Indiana Beach publishes the clearest information of anyone: a literal two-column table giving the minimum to ride with an adult beside the minimum to ride alone, for every ride in the park.

Key takeaways

  • 82 of 315 rides publish a lower minimum when an adult rides too, and 76 of those admit a 42-inch child.
  • 49 rides publish a maximum height, most at 54 inches, which stops taller children nobody expects.
  • Four Midwest parks stopped publishing heights entirely when they changed hands in 2026.
  • Holiday World and Indiana Beach publish the accompanied-rider rule where a parent can actually find it.

The 42-inch child is not shut out, but only if someone rides with them

This is the finding that changes a family's day and almost nobody publishes it where you can find it. Across 315 height rows gathered from operator ride pages, 82 carry a second, lower minimum that applies when an adult rides too, and 76 of those 82 admit a child of 42 inches. Cedar Point's Wild Mouse is 48 inches alone and 42 accompanied. Its Woodstock Express and Atomic Scrambler both drop from 48 to 36. Kings Island's Scrambler does the same, and Six Flags Great America's Hometown Fun Machine and River Rocker both go 48 to 36. The parent who reads only the headline number will queue for half of what their child could actually ride.

The parks, ranked by what they publish

  1. Cedar PointSandusky, Ohio

The most rides, and the most maximum heights

Cedar Point is the biggest published ride roster in the Midwest by a distance: 82 rides with heights on their own pages, on a peninsula sticking into Lake Erie. Fourteen of those publish an accompanied minimum, so a shorter child rides considerably more here than the headline numbers suggest.

  2. Holiday World & Splashin' SafariSanta Claus, Indiana

Rated 4.6 out of 5 on Google Maps from 16,884 reviews, as of October 2026

The one that publishes what it costs and who can ride

A Christmas-themed park with a water park attached, and the most useful publisher in this set. It defines its accompanied-rider rule in plain words, marks the rides it applies to, prints its gate price and gives free parking, free soft drinks and free sunscreen. Between the two halves it publishes 49 height rows and 30 of them carry an accompanied option, the highest proportion anywhere here.

    The drawback
It contradicts itself on Thunderbird, listing the ride inside its 48-inch band while writing on the same page that riders must be at least 52 inches and no taller than 6 feet 6. Both readings are recorded here and neither is treated as settled. The same page also shows a shoes-on and shoes-off measuring split between the theme park and the water park, so one child can clear 48 inches on one side of the property and fail it on the other.
  3. Indiana Beach Boardwalk ResortMonticello, Indiana

The clearest height information published anywhere in this set

A lakeside boardwalk park on Lake Shafer, and the one operator that lays the accompanied-rider question out properly. Its safety guide prints two columns for every ride, minimum to ride with an adult beside minimum to ride alone, which is exactly the comparison a parent needs and which every other park leaves you to assemble yourself.

  4. Kings IslandMason, Ohio

Rated 4.6 out of 5 on Google Maps from 35,799 reviews, as of October 2026

The second-largest roster, and a strong accompanied set

North of Cincinnati, with 65 rides publishing heights and a large children's area. Ten of its rides publish an accompanied minimum, and the drops are the same twelve inches seen at Cedar Point: the Scrambler is 48 alone and 36 accompanied, and Shake, Rattle & Roll is 54 alone and 42 accompanied.

  5. Six Flags Great AmericaGurnee, Illinois

Rated 4.4 out of 5 on Google Maps from 33,208 reviews, as of October 2026

The Chicago-area park, and the best accompanied ratio of the big three

Between Chicago and Milwaukee, with 56 rides publishing heights and fourteen of them publishing an accompanied minimum, which is the same count as Cedar Point from a roster two thirds the size. Hometown Fun Machine and River Rocker both drop from 48 to 36 inches with an adult.

  6. ValleyfairShakopee, Minnesota

Rated 4.2 out of 5 on Google Maps from 14,041 reviews, as of October 2026

The clearest pricing in the set

Twenty miles south west of Minneapolis on the Minnesota River, and one of only two parks here that publishes what a day actually costs. A Good Any Day ticket including the Superior Shores water park is $64.99 online, and a Select Your Day ticket starts at $39.99.

It left Six Flags for Enchanted Parks during 2026 and its ride pages now carry a description and nothing else. The accessibility page says requirements are posted on each attraction's safety guide sign, which is readable only after you have paid and walked in. A family planning around a height gate cannot do it from home.
  7. Mt Olympus Water & Theme ParkWisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Rated 3.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 21,211 reviews, as of October 2026

The indoor option, and the only one that runs in winter

In the middle of the Dells, with go-karts, a wooden coaster and indoor water park space. It is the only park in this set with genuinely indoor attractions, which makes it the answer for a Midwest trip between November and March when every outdoor park is shut.

  8. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor RockfordRockford, Illinois

Rated 4.0 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,395 reviews, as of October 2026

A water park rather than a theme park, and priced as a half day

Included because it publishes what most Midwest water parks do not: nine attractions with heights, four of them carrying an accompanied minimum. It is a half-day stop between Chicago and the Dells rather than a destination.

  9. Worlds of FunKansas City, Missouri

Rated 4.2 out of 5 on Google Maps from 18,565 reviews, as of October 2026

A big park that no longer tells you who can ride

Kansas City's park, with a substantial roster and an attached water park, and the reason it sits this far down the list is not the rides. It is that the operator stopped publishing the information a family needs.

  10. Michigan's AdventureMuskegon, Michigan

Rated 4.2 out of 5 on Google Maps from 9,348 reviews, as of October 2026

  11. Mid America AdventureEureka, Missouri

Rated 4.1 out of 5 on Google Maps from 18,958 reviews, as of October 2026

Formerly Six Flags St. Louis, and renamed in 2026

Thirty miles south west of St. Louis, this was Six Flags St. Louis until 2026. The name is the first thing to know about it, because a family searching the old one will find pages that no longer describe the park they are going to.

Who counts as an accompanying rider

Holiday World & Splashin' Safari

A supervising companion is defined as any guest who is at least 16 years of age and meets the rider requirements to ride alone. Rides marked with an asterisk in the operator's height bands require riding with one. The companion must help the guest while loading and unloading, assist in maintaining postural control while the ride is moving, and assist down stairs, walkways or steeply inclined ramps if the ride has to be evacuated.

Indiana Beach Boardwalk Resort

The safety and accessibility guide publishes two columns for every ride, minimum to ride with an adult beside minimum to ride alone. Some entries use the phrase sit up alone in place of a number, which is the most useful thing anyone here publishes for a toddler.

Cedar Point, Kings Island, Six Flags Great America and Hurricane Harbor Rockford

Each ride page renders a Min Height Accompanied field alongside Min Height and Max Height. The information is there but it is one ride page at a time, so no parent will ever see the pattern across a park.

Maximum heights

Forty-nine rides across this set publish a maximum height as well as a minimum, and this is the rule that blindsides people, because nobody expects to be too big. Cedar Point caps 23 attractions, mostly at 54 inches. Holiday World publishes a no-taller-than-54-inch list and then the same rule in reverse for Magic Waters, where a guest over 54 inches must be accompanied by a guest under 54 inches. A tall eleven-year-old is the most commonly caught, because they clear every minimum and fail the maximums their younger sibling never notices.

Season and closures

Almost everything here shuts for winter, and the exact dates are unusually hard to establish because most operators render their calendars client-side rather than in the page. Only two dates could be read directly: Indiana Beach's last regular 2026 operating day of Sunday 27 September, and Cedar Point's HalloWeekends window of 17 September to 1 November 2026. The only genuinely year-round attractions in this set are Mt Olympus's indoor parks in Wisconsin Dells.

Who inspects these rides

Ohio

Ohio Department of Agriculture, Division of Amusement Ride Safety and Fairs

The division licenses and inspects amusement rides before they operate, and states that it regularly inspects more than 4,000 rides across the state including theme parks, portable rides, aquatic amusement rides and inflatables. Rides need an annual permit and an initial inspection before operating, and the inspection is in three parts: an observation during assembly, a static inspection with the ride stopped, and an operational inspection while it runs. The rules sit in Ohio Administrative Code chapter 901:9-1.

How these figures were checked

Every height, price and date above was read from the operator's own ride and ticket pages on 6 September 2026, and the 315-row matrix behind it was counted from the saved file rather than estimated. Nothing came from a review site, a listicle or a fan wiki. Four operators are recorded as publishing nothing rather than being filled in from memory, and four more, including Silver Dollar City and Noah's Ark, returned 403 to every request and are absent from this page entirely rather than guessed at. Heights change between seasons, so check the ride's own page before you travel.

Two traps, and both come from the same 2026 upheaval. First, Cedar Point and Kings Island no longer have their own domains: the old height-requirements URLs now redirect, so any guide still linking them is linking a dead page. Second, Valleyfair, Worlds of Fun, Michigan's Adventure and the park now called Mid America Adventure all left Six Flags for Enchanted Parks during 2026, and their new ride pages publish no heights at all. If you are travelling to one of those four with a child near a gate, you cannot check from home, and the operator's own advice is to read the sign at the ride.

Midwest theme parks: FAQ

The questions parents ask before booking.

On published ride counts rather than acreage, Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, with 82 rides publishing a height requirement, ahead of Kings Island at 65 and Six Flags Great America at 56. That is the honest way to answer it: these operators do not publish comparable acreage or attendance figures on their own sites, and the attendance rankings quoted everywhere else come from third-party industry reports rather than from the parks, so they are not sourced here.

Holiday World and Indiana Beach, because they publish the accompanied-rider rule in a form a parent can use. Holiday World defines a supervising companion as anyone at least 16 who meets the requirements to ride alone, and marks every ride the rule applies to. Indiana Beach prints two columns for every ride: the minimum to ride with an adult beside the minimum to ride alone. Everywhere else the same information exists one ride page at a time, which means you will not find it while planning.

Far more than the headline numbers suggest, provided an adult rides too. Of the 315 published height rows across these parks, 82 carry a lower minimum for an accompanied rider, and 76 of those 82 admit a child of 42 inches. Cedar Point's Wild Mouse drops from 48 to 42, and its Woodstock Express and Atomic Scrambler both drop from 48 to 36. The practical advice is to check every ride's accompanied figure rather than its headline one, because the difference is routinely a whole category of ride.

Yes, on 49 rides across this set, and it catches families out far more than the minimums do. Cedar Point caps 23 attractions, most of them at 54 inches. Holiday World publishes a no-taller-than-54-inch list and then reverses it for Magic Waters, where a guest over 54 inches must be accompanied by one under it. The child most often turned away is a tall ten or eleven-year-old who has never been stopped by a height rule in their life.

Almost all of them are outdoor and seasonal, and the exact dates are genuinely hard to pin down because most operators render their calendars with scripts rather than publishing them in the page. Two dates were readable: Indiana Beach's last regular 2026 day is Sunday 27 September, and Cedar Point's HalloWeekends runs 17 September to 1 November 2026. If you are travelling between November and March, the indoor parks at Mt Olympus in Wisconsin Dells are the only thing in this set that is open.
