Which Maldives hotel actually takes a family, and what will it cost before the room?
Kaani Grand Seaview publishes the only four-person room in the set with a floor area attached, a 45 square metre Quadruple, and its group publishes a real child boat fare. Kaani Village and Spa is the cheaper answer on tax rather than on rate, because it sits in the USD 6 Green Tax band. Boutique Beach on Dhigurah is the only operator anywhere in this research that tells you what the third and fourth people actually sleep on. Hulhule Island Hotel has the country's only genuine connecting-room product, and it is on the runway island.

This page covers the hotels rather than the private-island resorts, which means the Male and airport-island city hotels and the local-island hotels a family can reach on a public speedboat. The pattern across all twelve is that the room is the thing operators publish worst and the boat is the thing they publish best. Kaani states occupancy as a count of adults on every room card across four hotels, with no child, infant or total figure anywhere and no bed configuration for any room type. Arena Beach names seven room types with no occupancy at all. Ranthari and Season Paradise publish nothing about their rooms while publishing complete transfer schedules. Against that, one operator, Boutique Beach, names the actual furniture, and one, Hulhule Island Hotel, sells a real interconnecting product. Not one of the twelve publishes a cot charge or any cot policy, and only one publishes a child price for food.

What the bands mean
The room rate is the smallest of the three numbers a Maldives family pays. The Green Tax is charged per person per night and collected at reception rather than at the airport, and it is either USD 12 or USD 6 depending on the property. Kaani Hotels publishes both in one sentence: USD 12 for Kaani Haven Beach, Kaani Palm Beach and Kaani Grand Seaview, and USD 6 for Kaani Beach Hotel and Kaani Village. Arena Beach, standing on the same island, publishes the USD 6 rate. Then the boat. Kaani charges USD 25 an adult and USD 15 a child aged above 2 to 9.99 each way for the 35-minute Maafushi speedboat. Ranthari on Ukulhas charges USD 100 return an adult and USD 50 for a child under 10, with under-twos free, on an 80-minute run. Season Paradise on Thulusdhoo charges USD 30 an adult and USD 15 a child one way. Everything else is an absence: not one of the twelve publishes a cot charge, and only one publishes a child price for food.

Each row carries the operator's own published journey from Velana International Airport, quoted as the operator's claim. Where not to book in the Maldives
Four things to settle before you pay. The first is the Green Tax, because it is charged per person per night at reception and it is not one number: Kaani publishes USD 12 for three of its hotels and USD 6 for two others in the same sentence, and for a family of four with two children over two that gap is USD 168 across a week. The second is the boat, which is almost never in the room rate and which Kaani states plainly must be booked separately. The third is that a published occupancy in the Maldives usually counts adults only, so a Quadruple advertised for four adults and a Family Room advertised for three are not telling you where children fit. The fourth is Arena Beach's condition that room assignments across its four Maafushi properties depend on availability at check-in, which means the hotel you chose is not guaranteed to be the hotel you get. On the local islands, note also that alcohol is prohibited outright and swimwear is restricted to designated bikini beaches, which two operators state clearly and most do not mention at all.
When to book
Book the boat at the same time as the room, and earlier than feels necessary. The published speedboat schedules are thin, at three to five departures a day on the Maafushi runs and two on the Ukulhas and Dhigurah ones, and several operators require flight details days ahead to hold a seat: Crystal Sands asks for them at least three days before arrival. A late-evening arrival at Velana can miss the last boat of the day entirely, which turns into an unplanned airport-island night. The public ferry is the cheap alternative and Crystal Sands is the only operator that publishes its timetable, at 15:00 out of Villingili and 07:30 back from Maafushi with no service on Fridays, so it is a once-a-day option rather than a flexible one. December is the peak and it carries mandatory gala dinners at several properties, charged on arrival and not included in the booking.
