• Tromso car rental winter tyres and legal dates

  According to Statens vegvesen, vehicles in Troms must have a tyre tread depth of at least 3 mm between 16 October and 30 April inclusive. Studded tyres are legally permitted during this same window and must be installed on all four wheels. Non-studded friction tyres may be used year-round. Note that Hertz Norway publishes its own winter tyre fitting window starting on 1 November, which is 16 days after the legal requirement takes effect in Troms.

• Driving in Tromso winter and convoy rules

  When crossing exposed passes, Statens vegvesen may initiate convoy driving (kolonnekjoring). The road authority requires drivers to have a full tank or charged battery, hazard lights on, and a torch, spade, tow rope, food, hot drinks, and winter footwear packed. Crews can reject vehicles lacking appropriate tyres or clothing. Maintain a minimum gap of 15 metres from passenger cars and 50 metres from heavy vehicles.
