Where to Stay in Tromso for the Northern Lights

The core commercial strip runs along Sjogata, Storgata, Kaigata and Prostneset on the eastern shoreline of Tromsoya. Good to know: The city centre is the brightest part of the island, meaning urban light pollution obscures faint auroral displays. Catching the lights reliably usually requires booking an excursion coach, which spends between two and eight hours travelling out to dark inland corridors.

Situated across the Tromsobrua bridge on the mainland, Tromsdalen sits directly below the Arctic Cathedral and the Fjellheisen cable car station. Kvaloya is the rugged island directly west of Tromsoya, terminating at the small coastal settlement of Sommaroy roughly 52 kilometres from the airport. Accommodation here faces out towards the open Norwegian Sea, surrounded by dark coastal horizons free of city lighting. Guests can observe aurora displays directly from the shoreline without joining bus tours.

Stretching along the Ullsfjord and the dramatic Lyngen Alps between 25 and 100 kilometres east of Tromso, this area is built entirely around dark-sky observation. Establishments like Aera at Skittenelv offer panoramic glass-roof cabins positioned directly beneath aurora transit paths, allowing travellers to watch the night sky from heated rooms. Stays frequently package saunas, outdoor activities, and car rentals together.

Good to know: Staying out along the fjords requires navigating Arctic winter roads yourself or relying on private shuttles that cost up to NOK 1,000 per trip. Off-site amenities are absent, meaning evening meals and daytime entertainment are tied entirely to your lodging operator.

Covering the hilly interior and northern stretches of the island around Stakkevollan, Workinnmarka, and the university, these districts consist largely of local family housing and student quarters. Frequent Svipper buses travel along the main avenues, connecting back to the centre within 10 to 15 minutes. It offers a calm, ordinary slice of northern Norwegian town life.

Good to know: There are no conventional hotels in these neighbourhoods; every chain hotel on Tromsoya except the airport Moxy is situated downtown. Choosing to stay here means reserving private homestays or sublet flats without staffed front desks, luggage storage, or organised tour pickups.
