Finnish Lapland has five airports a British traveller can land at, and they are not interchangeable. Rovaniemi (RVN) serves the regional capital, Santa Claus Village, and Luosto. Kittila (KTT) places you in ski country for Levi, Yllas, and Kittila village. Ivalo (IVL) serves the far north including Saariselka, Kakslauttanen, Kiilopaa, Ivalo village, and Inari. Enontekio (ENF) handles winter tour charters for Hetta and snow-activity centres. Kuusamo (KAO) sits southeast and serves the ski fell of Ruka.
Airport-to-resort road distances vary enormously across the network. The closest connection is Kittila Airport to Levi at 15 km, published by Finavia. In contrast, reaching Luosto from Rovaniemi Airport requires a 110 km coach trip according to Santa's Hotel Aurora. Furthermore, polar night conditions differ by destination. The Finnish Meteorological Institute explains that kaamos - the Finnish word for polar night - stays roughly half a degree north of the Arctic Circle because day length at the circle never drops to zero. Visit Rovaniemi publishes fifteen routes from the UK and Ireland for winter 2026-2027. Of those fifteen services, seven conclude on or before 5 January 2027. Finnair states this journey takes 10 to 15 minutes by Airport Express bus, taxi, or rental car, while the Airport Express operator timetable lists 25 to 45 minutes for the full route between the airport and the central railway station.
Ground transport from Rovaniemi Airport is clearly priced. The Airport Express bus charges 8,00 EUR one way to the city centre. Payment is strictly by card or pre-paid ticket; the operator does not accept cash on board. Reaching Santa Claus Village on the same Airport Express shuttle costs 4,00 EUR one way or 7,00 EUR return, taking 5 to 20 minutes. Local municipal Linkkari bus 8 runs between the city centre and Santa Claus Village for 3,60 EUR in 30 minutes, but does not serve the airport terminal.
Travellers heading to Luosto from Rovaniemi Airport can book the Kutilan Liikenne ski bus. According to the operator timetable, this coach runs four times daily, departing the airport at 9:20 and arriving at Lapland Hotels Luostotunturi at 10:50 (1 hour 30 minutes). Finnair advertises multiple connecting flights daily from Helsinki to Rovaniemi all year, publishing flight times of 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes. Norwegian also operates the Helsinki to Rovaniemi route year-round with several weekly services, quoting a gate-to-gate block time of 1 hour 20 minutes. Neither airline publishes an exact daily rotation count.
Beyond Rovaniemi, Finnair maintains year-round daily domestic flights from Helsinki to Kittila and Ivalo, adding high-season rotations in core winter.
