The Best Time to Visit Stockholm
Stockholm swings harder between seasons than almost any European capital. In late June it is barely dark at all and the archipelago boats run all day; in December you get about six hours of light and the city retreats indoors to candles and Christmas markets. Both are worth doing, but they are completely different trips.
When is the best time to visit Stockholm?
June and July are the best time to visit Stockholm - daylight runs to nearly midnight, temperatures reach a comfortable 21-22°C, and the archipelago and outdoor swimming are fully open. September is the value pick, with autumn colour, mild days and far fewer visitors. December is dark and cold but genuinely lovely for Christmas markets. January and February are cheapest, coldest and darkest.

| Month | Weather | Crowds | Price | What it's like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | -1°C, cold, dark | Low | $ | Coldest and darkest, with about six hours of light. Very cheap, and the museums are empty. Snow is likely. |
| Feb | -1°C, cold, bright | Low | $ | Still freezing but the light returns quickly and clear days are common. Ice skating and winter markets. |
| Mar | 3°C, cold, brightening | Low | $ | Snow lingers while days lengthen fast. Cheap and quiet, though the archipelago is still largely closed. |
| Apr | 9°C, cool, changeable | Moderate | $$ | Spring arrives late here. Parks green up and terraces cautiously open, but it can still turn cold overnight. |
| May | 16°C, mild, long days | Moderate | $$ | A lovely, underrated month - blossom, long evenings and the city outdoors again before the summer rates arrive. |
| Jun | 21°C, warm, endless light | High | $$$ | Near-24-hour daylight around Midsummer and the archipelago fully open. The best month, and the most Swedish. |
| Jul | 22°C, warm, bright | Peak | $$$ | Warmest month, full archipelago timetable and swimming in the city. Busiest and priciest, and many locals are away. |
| Aug | 21°C, warm, showers | High | $$$ | Still summer, with crayfish parties and slightly darker evenings. Rain becomes more likely toward month end. |
| Sep | 16°C, mild, crisp | Moderate | $$ | The value month - autumn colour, crisp clear air, thinner crowds and prices dropping while the city is still outdoors. |
| Oct | 10°C, cool, wet | Low | $$ | Golden parks and cosy cafes, but darkening fast and the archipelago boats wind down to a skeleton service. |
| Nov | 5°C, cold, grey | Low | $ | The bleakest month - dark, damp and grey, without the snow or lights that redeem December. Cheapest rates. |
| Dec | 2°C, cold, dark | Moderate | $$ | Six hours of light but genuinely magical - Christmas markets in Gamla Stan, candles everywhere and often snow. |
