What is the best month to visit Stockholm?

June, narrowly ahead of July. Around Midsummer the light barely goes at all - it stays usable until nearly midnight - temperatures sit at a comfortable 21°C, and the archipelago ferries run their full timetable. July is marginally warmer and the busiest and priciest month, with many locals away on holiday. If cost matters more than daylight, September gives you mild weather, autumn colour and considerably lower rates.

Is Stockholm worth visiting in winter?

Yes, but know what you are buying. December is genuinely lovely - Christmas markets in the Gamla Stan old square, candles in every window, often snow, and the whole Swedish concept of mys, which is their version of cosiness. The catch is about six hours of daylight and temperatures around freezing. January and February are colder still but cheapest and brightest on clear days. November is the one month to skip: dark and grey without the snow or lights that make December work.

When can you visit the Stockholm archipelago?

Realistically late June to late August, which is when the ferry network runs a full timetable to the 30,000 islands. Outside that window the service drops sharply to a handful of year-round routes serving residents, so island-hopping becomes difficult and many island restaurants and guesthouses close entirely. If the archipelago is a main reason for your trip, book inside that summer window - it is the single strongest argument for paying peak-season prices here.

How dark is Stockholm in winter?

Around six hours of usable daylight in December, with sunrise near 8.45am and sunset before 3pm. It is not polar darkness - that is far further north - but it does reshape a trip. Plan museums and indoor sights for the middle of the day and treat the long evenings as the point rather than the problem, since the city lights, markets and cafes are at their best then. By contrast, late June barely gets properly dark at all.

Is Stockholm expensive?

Yes - it is one of Europe's more expensive capitals, particularly for alcohol, which is sold through the state Systembolaget chain and taxed heavily. Restaurant dinners and hotel rooms both run above the Western European average. Two things soften it: the lunch deal, dagens lunch, is served on weekdays for a fraction of dinner prices and is the single best way to eat well cheaply, and Stockholm's museums include several excellent free ones. Winter rates outside December are markedly lower.

How many days do you need in Stockholm?

Three days covers the city: Gamla Stan and the Royal Palace, the Vasa Museum with its salvaged 17th-century warship, Skansen and Djurgården, and a walk through Södermalm. A fourth day is well spent on the archipelago in summer, which is what makes Stockholm different from other Nordic capitals, or on Drottningholm Palace by boat. In winter, three days is plenty given the short daylight hours.

Stockholm swings harder between seasons than almost any European capital. In late June it is barely dark at all and the archipelago boats run all day; in December you get about six hours of light and the city retreats indoors to candles and Christmas markets. Both are worth doing, but they are completely different trips.
