Best: February & May-SeptemberCheapest: April, June & November

Sapporo is the one part of Japan that escapes the summer humidity, and the one that gets buried in snow. It takes around five metres a year, which is why the powder at Niseko is world-famous and why the Snow Festival can carve buildings out of ice. Those two facts drive the entire calendar.

In Brief

When is the best time to visit Sapporo?

February is the best time to visit Sapporo if you want winter - the Snow Festival fills Odori Park with ice sculptures and the Hokkaido powder is at its deepest, though hotels book out months ahead. For everything else, May to September is the sweet spot: dry, comfortable days in the 20s°C with none of the humidity that makes the rest of Japan hard work in summer. Avoid late April and November, the awkward gaps between seasons.

Time it right: Sapporo's seasonal highlights

  • Sapporo Snow Festival

    Early February

Enormous snow and ice sculptures fill Odori Park and Susukino for a week - the biggest winter event in Japan and the hardest week to book.

  • Niseko powder season

    December-March

Around five metres of exceptionally dry snow a year makes Hokkaido one of the world's most reliable powder destinations.

  • Furano lavender

    July

The lavender fields two hours inland bloom for a few weeks, drawing day trips and photographers across the island.

  • Odori beer gardens

    July-August

The central park turns into Japan's largest outdoor beer garden for the summer - the local way to use the mild weather.
