What is the best month to visit Sapporo?

February if you want the winter version, July if you want the summer one - and they are genuinely different trips. February brings the Snow Festival, with vast ice sculptures filling Odori Park, plus the deepest powder of the season at Niseko and Rusutsu. July gives you warm, dry days around 25°C without the humidity that makes the rest of Japan uncomfortable in summer, plus the Furano lavender fields. June and September are the quieter, cheaper versions of the summer window.

Is Sapporo a good summer destination?

It is one of the best in Japan, for a reason most visitors do not know: Hokkaido largely skips the rainy season that soaks Honshu in June, and it never gets the punishing humidity of a Tokyo or Kyoto summer. Days sit in the low-to-mid 20s°C, evenings are cool, and Odori Park turns into Japan's largest outdoor beer garden. If you have found Japanese summers hard work before, this is the part of the country that solves it.

When is the Sapporo Snow Festival?

Early February, running for about a week. Odori Park fills with enormous snow and ice sculptures, some the size of buildings, with a second site in Susukino and more at Tsudome. It is the biggest winter event in Japan and it fills essentially every hotel in the city, with rates multiplying and the best rooms gone months ahead. Book as early as you possibly can, or stay out at Shin-Sapporo and take the subway in.

When is the best time to ski in Hokkaido?

January and early February for the deepest, driest powder, which is what built Niseko's international reputation - Hokkaido receives around five metres of snow a year, and its low humidity makes that snow unusually light. December is reliable and slightly cheaper as the season opens, and March still has good coverage in the mountains with warmer, sunnier days and noticeably lower prices. Sapporo works as a base for day trips, though the major resorts are two to three hours away.

When should you avoid Sapporo?

Late April and November, the two gaps between seasons. In April the snow has gone but spring has not arrived and the cherry blossom is still weeks off, leaving a muddy, grey city. November is the reverse - autumn colour finished, snow not yet settled, damp and overcast. Both are the cheapest months of the year, so if price is the deciding factor they are usable, but neither shows the city at anything like its best.

How many days do you need in Sapporo?

Two days covers the city itself - Odori Park and the TV Tower, the beer museum, Ohori Park and the castle ruins, and a long evening working through ramen and yatai stalls in Susukino. Three or four days lets you use it properly as a Hokkaido base: Otaru is 35 minutes by train, the Jozankei hot springs an hour, and Furano or Niseko two to three hours out for lavender or powder depending on the season.
