When is the best time to visit Sapporo?
February is the best time to visit Sapporo if you want winter - the Snow Festival fills Odori Park with ice sculptures and the Hokkaido powder is at its deepest, though hotels book out months ahead. For everything else, May to September is the sweet spot: dry, comfortable days in the 20s°C with none of the humidity that makes the rest of Japan hard work in summer. Avoid late April and November, the awkward gaps between seasons.

Sapporo month by month
Every month rated for weather, crowds and price, so you can match the trip to the month.
| Month | Weather | Crowds | Price | What it's like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | -1°C, snowy, cold | High | $$$ | Deep midwinter and peak powder at Niseko and Rusutsu. Cold, dark and genuinely snowbound in the city. |
| Feb | 0°C, snowy, cold | Peak | $$$ | The Snow Festival fills Odori Park with vast ice sculptures. The city's busiest and priciest week by far. |
| Mar | 4°C, thawing | Moderate | $$ | Ski season continues in the mountains while the city slush sets in. Rates fall after the festival crowds leave. |
| Apr | 11°C, cool, muddy | Low | $ | The awkward month - snow gone, spring not arrived, and cherry blossom still weeks away. Cheapest rates. |
| May | 17°C, mild, dry | High | $$$ | Cherry blossom finally reaches Hokkaido, weeks after Tokyo, and Golden Week fills the island. |
| Jun | 21°C, mild, dry | Moderate | $$ | Hokkaido skips the rainy season that soaks the rest of Japan - clear, dry and comfortable. Excellent value. |
| Jul | 25°C, warm, dry | High | $$$ | Warm without humidity, and the Furano lavender fields peak. The best month for the island's outdoors. |
| Aug | 26°C, warm, humid-ish | High | $$$ | Warmest month and still far more pleasant than Honshu. Beer gardens fill Odori Park all month. |
| Sep | 22°C, mild, clear | Moderate | $$ | Crisp, clear and quieter, with the first autumn colour in the mountains toward the end of the month. |
| Oct | 16°C, cool, colourful | Moderate | $$ | Hokkaido's autumn colour peaks well before Honshu's, and Daisetsuzan turns first. Cool and pleasant. |
| Nov | 8°C, cold, grey | Low | $ | The other gap month - leaves gone, snow not settled, grey and damp. Cheapest along with April. |
| Dec | 2°C, snowy | High | $$$ | Snow returns properly and ski season opens. The White Illumination lights up Odori through the month. |
When to book Sapporo
On the table above, Apr and Nov sit in the bottom price band and Jan, Feb, May, Jul, Aug and Dec in the top one. Find the row that sounds like your trip.
| If you want | Months | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The best trip for the money | Sep and Oct | Rated good above without hitting the top price band, so you are not paying peak rates for the conditions. |
| The lowest price, whatever the weather | Apr and Nov | The bottom price band. Check the weather column first, because some of these are cheap for a reason. |
| Peak season anyway | Feb, May, Jun and Jul | Busiest and dearest. This is the window where booking early changes the price, not just what is left. |
| To know what to skip | Nov | Rated off-peak here. The low price is the compensation, not a bargain. |
