In Brief

When is the best time to visit Banff?

The best time to visit Banff is June to August, when the turquoise lakes are thawed and at their most vivid, the hiking trails are open and the weather is warmest - it's also the peak, so book months ahead. September is the insider's pick: golden larches, thinner crowds and lower prices. For skiing, come December to March. Note that Moraine Lake and parts of Lake Louise are frozen and inaccessible from roughly November to May - the postcard views are summer-only.

Jan-5°C, cold, snowyModerate$$Proper Rockies winter: dry powder across the three ski resorts, frozen-waterfall walks in Johnston Canyon and ice on Lake Louise.
Feb-2°C, cold, sunny spellsModerate$$Prime skiing continues with lengthening days; the SnowDays festival brings ice sculptures to town.
Mar3°C, spring snowModerate$$The favourite ski month: deep base, warmer temperatures and sunny afternoons on the slopes.
Apr8°C, slushy thawLow$Between seasons: skiing winds down (Sunshine runs late), trails are muddy and the lakes are still white. Cheap and quiet.
May14°C, fresh, changeableModerate$$Town wakes up and valley trails clear, but Moraine Lake stays frozen until roughly late May-June - too early for the postcard.
Jun18°C, mild, showeryHigh$$$The lakes thaw into full turquoise and the crowds arrive with them. Long days, waterfalls at full volume, some high trails still snowy.
Jul22°C, warmPeak$$$Peak Banff: every trail and viewpoint open, wildflowers out. Moraine Lake access is by shuttle or tour - reserve early.
Aug21°C, warmPeak$$$The busiest month at the famous lakes; go at sunrise or late afternoon and the scenery still outnumbers the people.
Sep16°C, crisp, goldenModerate$$The connoisseur's month: larches turn gold in the high valleys late September, crowds fall away and prices ease.
Oct9°C, cold snapsLow$Quiet and cheap with early snow dustings; Moraine Lake road closes mid-month as the park slides toward winter.
Nov0°C, gray, early snowLow$The dead month: lakes frozen dull, trails icy, ski season barely starting. Good for hot springs and empty hotel deals only.
Dec-5°C, snowy, festiveModerate then Peak$$$Ski season proper begins and the town turns festive; the Christmas-New Year weeks bring peak winter pricing.

Time it right: Banff's seasonal highlights

  • Lake season (Moraine & Louise thawed)

    June–September

The glacier-fed turquoise colour peaks from late June through September - outside this window the lakes are partly or fully frozen.

  • Larch season

    Mid-late September

The alpine larches around Moraine Lake and Sunshine Meadows turn brilliant gold for about two weeks - Banff's short, famous autumn.

  • Ski season

    December–April

Three resorts share one pass: Sunshine Village, Lake Louise and Norquay. Sunshine's season often stretches into May.

  • Johnston Canyon icewalks

    December–March

Guided walks to frozen waterfalls through the canyon's catwalks - the signature non-ski winter activity.
