Glacier has one of the shortest seasons of any big US park: Going-to-the-Sun Road usually opens fully in late June or July and closes again in October. Time it right and you get the most scenic drive in America with open trails - time it wrong and half the park is behind a snow gate.

In Brief

When is the best time to visit Glacier National Park?

The best time to visit Glacier National Park is July to mid-September, the only window when Going-to-the-Sun Road is reliably open end to end and the high trails are clear of snow. July and August are peak - book lodging many months out and expect vehicle reservations on the busy corridors. September is the sweet spot: the road is still open, crowds thin fast and larches begin to turn. From mid-October to June, snow closes the alpine section and much of the park's interior.

MonthWeatherCrowdsPriceWhat it's like
Jan0°C, deep snowLow$Deep winter: only the lower valleys (Apgar, Lake McDonald's foot) are reachable. Snowshoeing is lovely, but most of the park is shut.
Feb3°C, snowyLow$Still buried. Whitefish's ski resort keeps the area alive, and clear days over frozen Lake McDonald are beautiful - and empty.
Mar8°C, meltingLow$Snow lingers everywhere and the alpine road is months from opening; a quiet ski-and-scenery month at best.
Apr13°C, thawingLow$Valleys green up and lower trails clear, but Going-to-the-Sun Road plowing has barely begun. Cheap, quiet - and limited.
May18°C, fresh, showeryLow$$Waterfalls thunder, wildlife wakes up and you can cycle the closed road as it's plowed - a local favourite. High country still snowed in.
Jun22°C, mildModerate$$Lower trails and lakes shine; the full road usually opens somewhere between late June and mid-July, so check status before you plan around it.
Jul27°C, warm, dryPeak$$$The season proper: the road is open, every trail beckons and everyone knows it. Reserve lodging and timed entries well ahead.
Aug27°C, warm, dryPeak$$$Prime hiking across the park (Highline, Grinnell, Hidden Lake). Haze from regional wildfires is the one wildcard some years.
Sep21°C, crisp, clearModerate$$The connoisseur's month: road still open, crowds gone after Labor Day, huckleberry-fattened bears out and larches turning gold late month.
Oct13°C, cold snapsLow$Golden and empty until the first big storm closes the alpine road - usually mid-late October. A gamble that often pays off early in the month.
Nov5°C, snow arrivingLow$The park slips into winter; the high road is closed and services in the gateway towns wind down.
Dec0°C, deep winterLow$Snowbound and silent. Come for Whitefish's ski season and festive small-town charm rather than the park itself.

Time it right: Glacier National Park's seasonal highlights

  • Going-to-the-Sun Road season

    Late June/July–mid-October

The 80km alpine drive over Logan Pass is the park's centrepiece - it opens only when plowing finishes and closes with the first lasting snow.

  • Cycling the closed road

    May–June

Before cars are allowed, the plowed sections open to bikes - riding beneath the melting walls of snow is a beloved local tradition.

  • Larch season

    Late September–mid-October

The alpine larches turn brilliant gold across the high valleys - Glacier's short, spectacular version of fall colour.

  • Huckleberry & bear season

    August–September

Ripe huckleberries pull black and grizzly bears onto open slopes - carry bear spray and keep your distance on every trail.
