What the bands mean
Rates are shown as bands, not figures, because nearly every hotel here sells through a live booking engine. Two operators publish numbers. Hideaway in Arugam Bay lists its rooms in US dollars with government taxes and service charge included: an AC Double Room is USD 130 room only from July to September 2026 and USD 85 from October 2026 to June 2027. Ceylon Tea Trails starts a whole five-room bungalow at USD 4,835 a night. Everywhere else, ask whether a quote is nett. Sri Lanka's levy rules treat a hotel service charge of up to 10 per cent as separate from the room, VAT has been 18 per cent since 1 January 2024 for businesses above the registration threshold, and licensed hotels pay a Tourism Development Levy of 1 per cent of turnover, or 0.5 per cent for small ones. Tips come on top: Resplendent Ceylon suggests 10 to 15 per cent at its resorts.

The 12 hotels, and who each one is wrong for
Walking times are to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo. These are airport transfers, not walks. Every hotel here is a drive from Bandaranaike International Airport, and the transfer decides how many nights a region is worth. Where a hotel publishes a time, we give it. Heritance Kandalama and Earl's Regency publish a distance only. Galle Face, 98 Acres, Jetwing Yala and Hideaway publish neither, so we give the OpenStreetMap road distance from the airport. We leave routed driving times out because they ran well under the hotels' own figures wherever both exist.

Weligama, south coast
Cape Weligama
€€€€Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 769 reviews, as of October 2026Best all-roundA Relais & Châteaux clifftop resort of suites and villas above Weligama Bay, with a cliff-edge Moon Pool, a family Cove Pool and one Michelin Key.

- Right for
- Families who want space: the Two-Bedroom Family Suite sleeps five adults and two children, opens onto the Cove Pool, and cribs and rollaway beds are free.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone who wants to step from the room onto the sand. The resort is on the clifftop, with Weligama's beaches within easy reach rather than below the door.
- The catch

Galle Fort
Amangalla
€€€€Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 949 reviews, as of October 2026Aman's hotel inside the ramparts of 17th-century Galle Fort, a UNESCO site, in a building that has taken guests for over 150 years, with a garden pool and hydrotherapy suites.

- Right for
- Couples who want Galle Fort's streets from the door, with daily morning yoga and up to 30 minutes a day in the hydrotherapy suites included in the stay.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: A beach holiday. The pool is in the garden, and Aman's own pairing for the sea is Amanwella in Tangalle, an hour and a half's drive away.
- The catch
- The catch: Aman's site publishes no room count and no child policy for Amangalla, and its travel notes still describe the October 2024 visa rule, so check entry rules on the official ETA site.

- The catch
- The catch: It is the furthest south-coast pick from the main airport, 2.5 to 3 hours by the hotel's own figure, and Yala is another 2.5 hours on.

Galle Face, Colombo
Galle Face Hotel
€€€Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 10,269 reviews, as of October 2026Colombo's seafront hotel since 1864, facing Galle Face Green, with the only saltwater pool in the city and six restaurants and bars.
- Walk to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo

- Right for
- A first or last night with history attached: Colonial Family Rooms take extra beds, and under-5s stay and eat free, two to a room with their parents.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Light sleepers on a wedding weekend. The Chequerboard lawn takes outdoor events of up to 1,000 guests, with music allowed until 11pm.
- The catch
- The catch: Non-residents must pay in US dollars, and from 23 December to 5 January cancelling needs 14 days' notice instead of the usual 48 hours.

Kandalama, near Dambulla
Heritance Kandalama
€€€Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 9,819 reviews, as of October 2026Geoffrey Bawa's 1994 hotel built into 211 acres of protected forest above Kandalama Lake, with Sigiriya Rock in view from the Sigiriya Wing.
- Walk to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo
- 150 km by road to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo
- Right for
- A first Cultural Triangle stay: the Dambulla cave temples and Sigiriya are minutes away, and the hotel runs its own cave dinners, boat rides and elephant safaris.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Families who need a family room. Every room category the site describes is built around a king-size bed, and none is listed as a family or connecting room.
- The catch
- The catch: Cancellation is free only until 7 days before arrival. Between 7 and 3 days out you pay half, and inside 3 days the whole stay.

Kundasale, Kandy
Earl's Regency

Ceylon Tea Trails

- Walk to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo
- 137 km, 3.5 to 4 hours by road to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo

- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone on a budget. The one whole-bungalow price on the site starts at USD 4,835 a night for five rooms.
- The catch
- The catch: The bungalows sit 1.5 to 16 km apart, and the estate's own page names two monsoons, May to August and October to December.

Ella, hill country
98 Acres Resort & Spa
€€Rated 4.6 out of 5 on Google Maps from 4,795 reviews, as of October 2026A boutique retreat of 46 chalets on a tea estate outside Ella, facing the Ella Gap and Little Adam's Peak, with private heated pools at some chalets.
- Walk to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo
- About 229 km by road to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo
- Right for
- Families or two couples: the Two-Bedroom Suite has two bathrooms, a living area, a fully equipped kitchen and two balconies.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone tempted by the cheaper rupee rate. It is for Sri Lankan citizens and resident visa holders, and foreign guests who book it pay the difference at check-in.
- The catch
- The catch: The resort publishes no transfer time, and at about 229 km by road from the airport it works as a mid-trip stop, not an arrival night.

Palatupana, Yala
Jetwing Yala
€€€Rated 4.6 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,519 reviews, as of October 2026An 80-room hotel on 38 acres of coastal scrub that describes itself as the closest hotel to Yala National Park, with a resident naturalist.
- Walk to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo
- About 295 km by road to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo
- Right for
- Safari-first trips: the park is next door, drives go out with the hotel's naturalist, and 10 of the 80 rooms are built for wheelchair users.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone after a small lodge. With 80 rooms it is, by its own account, one of the largest hotels in Yala.
- The catch
- The catch: There is only one Family Room, and Jetwing's own pages disagree on its size: 100 sq m on the room page, 106 sq m on the accommodation page.

Pasikuda, east coast
The Bay an Uga Experience
€€€Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,337 reviews, as of October 2026Forty-four studios on Pasikuda's bay, half of them on the ground floor opening onto the beach, plus a two-bedroom Bay Suite and a Beach Villa with its own pool.

- 280 km, 5 hours 30 minutes by road to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), north of Colombo
- Right for
- Families with young swimmers from March to October: the hotel says its reef-protected bay stays warm and extremely calm all year.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: A November to February trip. The hotel says conditions are wetter then and the sea beyond the bay turns rougher.
- The catch
- The catch: It is 5 hours 30 minutes by road from the airport, and the quicker route is a Cinnamon Air flight to Batticaloa plus a transfer.

Kuchchaveli, north of Trincomalee

- Couples who want the quieter north of the east coast, 15 minutes from Nilaveli's calm water and within reach of Pigeon Island's reefs.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone landing on a long-haul flight who wants the beach the same afternoon. The hotel puts it 5 hours 30 minutes from the airport.

- The catch
- The catch: Online card payments carry a 3% fee, deposits are non-refundable, and the café at the roadside entrance turns into a cocktail bar with music at dusk.
Where not to book in Sri Lanka
No region here is a mistake in itself. The mistakes are seasonal and contractual. Do not plan a south-coast beach week from May to October around calm swimming: Cape Weligama calls those months its Emerald Season and runs its whale trips from December to April, when it says the south coast is calmer. Do not book the east coast for November to February: The Bay at Pasikuda says it is wetter then, with rougher sea beyond the bay, and Jungle Beach near Trincomalee gives its own dry season as March to June. Second, do not book a rupee rate unless you hold a Sri Lankan passport or residence visa: 98 Acres and Jungle Beach both reserve them, and 98 Acres charges foreign guests the difference at check-in. Third, check the Poya calendar before planning a celebration dinner: Earl's Regency in Kandy stops serving alcohol on Buddhist Poya holidays and through the Esala Perahera.
When to book
Book the east coast first if you are going in July, August or September. Hideaway in Arugam Bay sets a three-night minimum in those months and charges USD 130 for a double that costs USD 85 from October. On the south coast, Cape Weligama's Emerald Season offer, 30 per cent off with one child aged 2 to 16 staying free, does not run from 1 December to 15 April, so the discount and the dry season never overlap. Over Christmas, Galle Face Hotel needs 14 days' notice to cancel stays from 23 December to 5 January. Whatever the month, apply for your ETA online before you fly: since 25 May 2026 it is free for US and UK citizens, but you still need one.
