In Brief
Which luxury hotel in Sardinia should I book?
Hotel Capo d'Orso near Palau is the best all-round choice for a couple: a five-star member of the Leading Hotels of the World with a beach just below it, a seawater pool, a private marina and boats to the La Maddalena islands, 40 km north of Olbia. Smy Carlos V in Alghero is the best value, a 180-room five-star 300 metres from the old town.
Key takeaways
- 20 of Sardinia's 53 five-star hotels are in Arzachena, around Porto Cervo and Baja Sardinia
- The Gulf of Orosei, including Cala Gonone, has no five-star hotel at all
- Only 3 five-stars were open in February 2022, against 42 in September
- None of the ten is adults-only; 7Pines has an adults-only pool and Baia di Chia calls itself adults-oriented

Which one fits how you travel
Find the row that sounds like your trip. Every pick below names the traveller it is wrong for, so you can book on fit rather than on rank.
| If you are | Book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A couple wanting the islands on the doorstep | Hotel Capo d'Orso Thalasso & Spa | A private marina facing Caprera, sun decks over the water and a beach below the hotel. |
| After the Costa Smeralda's classic address | Hotel Cala di Volpe, a Luxury Collection Hotel | The original Couelle hotel, by the Pevero golf course. Accept that the beach is a boat ride. |
| Wanting a pool with no children in it | 7Pines Resort Sardinia | The Laguna Pool is reserved for adults in the Laguna rooms. Note it publishes no star rating. |
| Here mainly for dinner | Petra Segreta Resort & Spa | A 2026 Michelin star, 27 rooms, and 25 km from Olbia airport. No beach. |

What the bands mean
These are bands, not prices. None of the ten publishes a fixed nightly rate, every one sells through a live booking engine, and most are closed through the winter, so a rate read in October says nothing about August. Each band describes what the hotel is, from its own website on 3 October 2026: its size, its brand and what it includes. The live rate for your dates opens from the button on each card. Two costs to check on top: Almar Timi Ama charges extra for the front two rows of its beach loungers, and Hotel Capo d'Orso charges for entry to its thalasso centre.

The 10 hotels, and who each one is wrong for
Walking times are to the sea. On Sardinia the useful distance is from your room to the sea, so each card gives the hotel's own description of how you get there: a boat, a shuttle, a stairway, a land train or a path. Where a hotel publishes no distance, the card says so rather than guessing. Airport distances and drive times are the hotels' own figures. Star ratings are the hotels' own words; the island-wide counts come from the Regione Autonoma della Sardegna's accommodation register for 2025 and its monthly opening data for 2022, the latest year it publishes by month.

Cala Capra, near Palau
Hotel Capo d'Orso Thalasso & Spa
€€€Rated 4.6 out of 5 on Google Maps from 541 reviews, as of October 2026Best all-roundA five-star in a 100,000 square metre park facing Caprera, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, with a seawater pool, five wooden sun decks over the water and a private marina.
- Walk to the sea
- Cala Capra beach is just below the hotel to the sea
- Right for
- Couples who want the La Maddalena islands on the doorstep: excursions leave from the hotel's own marina on a 1927 sailing ship.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone travelling with a dog. The hotel's own catalogue says pets are not allowed.
- The catch
- The catch: Of its two beaches, one is public and one has the sunbed service, and entry to the L'Incantu thalasso centre is charged on top. The shuttle into Palau runs once a day, not on Saturdays, and costs extra.

Cala di Volpe, Costa Smeralda
Hotel Cala di Volpe, a Luxury Collection Hotel
€€€€Rated 4.6 out of 5 on Google Maps from 907 reviews, as of October 2026The Jacques Couelle-designed five-star on the Bay of Foxes, with an Olympic-size saltwater pool and the Pevero golf course next door, reopened on 16 April for 2026.
- Walk to the sea
- A five-minute boat ride to the hotel's private beach to the sea
- Right for
- Anyone who wants the Costa Smeralda's most famous address and the Pevero Golf Club, the 18-hole Robert Trent Jones course, beside it.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone who wants to step from the room onto sand. The beach is a boat ride away.
- The catch
- The catch: The boats to the beach run every 30 minutes from 10:00, and the last one returns at 17:30, so an early swim or a sunset on the sand is not part of the deal. The owner counts 125 rooms and the Costa Smeralda consortium 121.

Porto Cervo Piazzetta
Cervo Hotel, Costa Smeralda Resort
€€€€Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,683 reviews, as of October 2026The pink-stone five-star on the Piazzetta of Porto Cervo, 108 rooms including 16 Tennis Club rooms, open from 27 March in 2026.
- Walk to the sea
- Free shuttle to a private beach to the sea
- Right for
- Anyone who wants the Piazzetta and the marina of Porto Cervo outside the door rather than a resort with nothing around it.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone who wants a beach day without a timetable. The beach is reached by shuttle.
- The catch
- The catch: One pool for 108 rooms, and the beach shuttle leaves hourly from 09:30 to 12:30 and 14:30 to 16:30, with no departures over lunch.

Baja Sardinia
7Pines Resort Sardinia
€€€Rated 4.4 out of 5 on Google Maps from 303 reviews, as of October 2026A 75-room resort on 15 hectares at Baja Sardinia, part of Hyatt's Destination collection, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, the Cone Club on the beach and a pool kept for adults.
- Walk to the sea
- A main beach in the grounds, plus four coves to the sea
- Right for
- Couples who want an adults-only pool: the Laguna Pool is reserved for adults staying in the Laguna rooms and suites.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone booking on a star rating. The resort's own site calls it luxury but publishes no star rating.
- The catch
- The catch: Capogiro, the Michelin-starred restaurant, is closed on Sundays and Mondays, and the four coves along the grounds are not serviced. Day passes are sold to outside visitors.

San Pantaleo hills
Petra Segreta Resort & Spa
€€€Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 325 reviews, as of October 2026A 27-room five-star in the hills by San Pantaleo, the only Relais & Chateaux on the island by its own account, with a Michelin-starred restaurant and 10 rooms with a private heated pool.
- Walk to the sea
- No beach: Cala di Volpe is 13 km away to the sea
- Right for
- Couples who care more about dinner and privacy than sand: Il Fuoco Sacro holds a star in the 2026 Michelin Guide.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone without a car who wants a beach every day. The nearest bay the hotel names is 13 km away.
- The catch
- The catch: It is inland, so every beach day is a drive, and the spa is open to non-residents by reservation, so not every face in it will be a guest.

Chia, south coast
Conrad Chia Laguna Sardinia
€€€Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 415 reviews, as of October 2026The five-star flagship of the Chia Laguna estate, 107 rooms and suites over Chia Bay, with private beach clubs, the Monte Cogoni and Campana beaches and a pool heated for the shoulder months.
- Walk to the sea
- Monte Cogoni and Campana beaches; no distance published to the sea
- Right for
- Couples who want the south's golden-sand beaches and a pool that is heated for spring and autumn.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone who wants a hotel with only adults around it. The hotel says it welcomes couples and families.
- The catch
- The catch: It shares the estate with The Village, the resort's family hotel, and the Oasi rooms are a five-minute walk uphill from the main lobby.

Clifftop above Monte Cogoni beach, Chia
Baia di Chia Resort Sardinia, Curio Collection by Hilton
€€Rated 4.3 out of 5 on Google Maps from 326 reviews, as of October 2026A clifftop hotel on the Chia Laguna estate, newly raised to five stars and renamed, which describes itself as an adults-oriented retreat, with a semi-Olympic pool.
- Walk to the sea
- A stone stairway down to Monte Cogoni beach to the sea
- Right for
- Couples who want the quieter end of a big resort, with access to the estate's 13 restaurants and bars.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone with limited mobility. The beach is reached by a stone stairway.
- The catch
- The catch: Adults-oriented is not adults-only: the hotel sells a two-bedroom Suite Incanto as the best option for families. It is about an hour from Cagliari airport, 58 km by the resort's figure.

Notteri, Villasimius
Almar Timi Ama Resort & Spa
€€Rated 4.6 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,582 reviews, as of October 2026A 238-room five-star inside the Capo Carbonara marine protected area, between Porto Giunco beach and a lagoon with flamingos, with a seawater thalasso spa.
- Walk to the sea
- 500 m to the private beach, on foot or by electric land train to the sea
- Right for
- Couples who want a full resort with a seawater spa and Villasimius village 2 km away by the hotel's free bicycles.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone after a small, quiet hotel. It has 238 rooms, a Mini Club and a Teen Club.
- The catch
- The catch: The front two rows of beach loungers cost extra unless you book certain suites, and Cagliari airport is about an hour's drive, 55 km.

Lungomare Valencia, Alghero
Villa Las Tronas Hotel & Spa
€€€Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 422 reviews, as of October 2026A 24-room five-star in a former aristocratic villa on its own promontory, a few minutes from Alghero's old town, with a seawater pool outside and a heated one indoors.
- Walk to the sea
- Private piers on the rocks; no sand to the sea
- Right for
- Couples who want a small historic hotel, the old town within reach and Alghero airport only 10 km away.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone who wants a sandy beach. You swim from the villa's private piers.
- The catch
- The catch: The outdoor seawater pool is not heated and opens only in the summer months. All pets stay free, so a quiet villa can also be a dog-friendly one.

Alghero seafront
Smy Carlos V Wellness & Spa Alghero
€Rated 4.4 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,209 reviews, as of October 2026Best valueA renovated 180-room five-star directly on the Alghero seafront, 300 metres from the Catalan old town, with a seawater pool, a spa and free parking.
- Walk to the sea
- On the seafront, 300 m from the old town to the sea
- Right for
- Couples who want five stars and Alghero's old town on foot, for the lowest band on this page.
- Wrong for
- Wrong for: Anyone after an intimate hotel. It has 180 rooms and six conference rooms, so it is a conference hotel as well.
- The catch
- The catch: The entry room category looks over the garden, not the sea: the sea views start a category up.
Where not to book in Sardinia
Three traps on Sardinia, none of them a district. The first is the label: a famous five-star is not automatically a couples' hotel. Belmond's own factsheet calls Romazzino the perfect family retreat, Cala di Volpe runs a kids' club for ages 3 to 12, and Baia di Chia, which calls itself adults-oriented, still sells a family suite. The second is geography: if you picture Cala Gonone or Orosei, there is no five-star hotel on the Gulf of Orosei in the Region's 2025 register, so luxury there means a four-star. The third is the beach: at several of the best-known hotels it is a boat, a shuttle or a stairway away, and at Petra Segreta it is 13 km away. Check how you reach the sea before you pay for the view.
When to book
Book around the season before you book around price. In the Region's 2022 monthly figures, 41 five-star hotels were open in August, 42 in September and 39 in October, but only 10 in November and 3 in February. September and October therefore give you almost the full choice of five-stars outside the August crowds. Opening dates differ: the Cervo Hotel opened on 27 March in 2026 and Cala di Volpe on 16 April, and Chia Laguna advertised stays until 3 November. None of the hotel pages we read states an August minimum stay. Minimums appear on offers instead: Chia Laguna's late-summer discount needs three nights, Almar Timi Ama's Sardinian Break two, and Petra Segreta's off-season rate four, and that one excludes July and August.
