Driving in Corfu: what to know

Olive-grove lanes are one car wide
Away from the main coastal roads, Corfu's lanes thread between olive groves, stone walls and village houses with no room for two cars. Watch for pull-in spots as you go, be ready to reverse to the last one, and take mirrors in when squeezing past. This is why the small car wins here.
Split the island into two loops
Treat the north and south as separate days. The north loop - Paleokastritsa, the west-coast viewpoints, Sidari, Kassiopi - is the mountainous, winding one. The south day - Achilleion, Pelekas, the Halikounas beach strip - is gentler driving. Cramming both into one day means a lot of car and not much beach.
Don't drive into Corfu Town's old centre
The old town is a maze of pedestrian alleys with almost nowhere legal to leave a car, and the streets around it fill fast. Use the large paid car park by the old port or the spaces along the Spianada's approach roads, then walk - everything in town is walkable from there.
Scooters look tempting, cars make more sense
Scooter and quad hire is everywhere in the resorts, but Corfu's roads mix gravel patches, sudden bends and fast local traffic, and hire scooters here have a poor accident record. If you only ride occasionally, take the small car - air conditioning in August settles the argument anyway.
West-coast roads reward slow driving
The road down into Paleokastritsa and the lanes to viewpoints like Bella Vista at Lakones are steep, narrow and busy with coaches in summer. Go early or late in the day, use the horn lightly on blind hairpins, and don't stop on the bends for photos - there are proper laid-by viewpoints.
Fuel up before heading to the far north or south
Fuel stations cluster around Corfu Town and the main resort strips. Heading to Kassiopi, the northwest beaches or the island's southern tip, fill up first - rural stations are sparse and some keep short hours on Sundays.
