Cheap car rental in Europe: where it's genuinely cheap
Cheap car rental in Europe is real, but it lives in specific countries: Spain and Italy from about $10/day, Portugal and Ireland from $17. The table below compares live from-prices country by country, each linking straight to that country's car list, and the rest of the page covers the habits that keep a European rental cheap - manuals, early booking, and knowing each country's toll quirks.
Which country in Europe has the cheapest car rental?
Spain and Italy, with economy manuals from about $10/day outside peak season, then Portugal and Ireland from around $17/day. Book weeks ahead with free cancellation, take a manual, and compare totals with insurance included - that combination beats hunting a specific supplier every time. Islands and coastal hotspots run hot in July and August wherever you are.

| Country | From | Good to know | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spain | $10/day | The cheapest big market in Europe - fierce competition on the costas and islands keeps rates low year round. | Search |
| Italy | $10/day | Matches Spain on price. Watch the ZTL restricted-traffic zones in historic centres - fines arrive months later. | Search |
| Portugal | $17/day | Cheap, compact and rewarding to drive. Sort the electronic toll transponder at pickup. | Search |
| Ireland | $17/day | Low base rates but insurance excess runs high - price the total with cover included. | Search |
| Poland | $19/day | Central Europe's bargain, and a good base for a multi-country loop east of Berlin. | Search |
| Germany | $24/day | Mid-priced with an excellent road network and no motorway tolls for cars. | Search |
| Czech Republic | $25/day | Affordable, but buy the motorway vignette before you drive the highways. | Search |
| France | $26/day | Pricier base rates and paid motorways - budget tolls into any long drive. | Search |
| Croatia | $29/day | Summer demand on the coast pushes prices up - book months ahead for July and August. | Search |
| Greece | $31/day | Mainland is cheaper than the islands, where small fleets sell out fast in summer. | Search |
The cheapest way to rent a car in Europe
Three habits do most of the work. Book early with free cancellation - European fleets are smaller than American ones, so prices climb steeply as pickup approaches, and a cancellable booking lets you rebook whenever the price dips. Take a manual if you can drive one: it is the default across Europe and routinely a third cheaper than the automatic version of the same car, which also sells out first in summer. And compare the total with cover included, because the cheapest headline rate often carries a four-figure excess that the desk will happily reduce for more than the car costs.
Then match the country to the trip. If the route is flexible, starting it in a cheap market changes the whole budget: a two-week loop picked up in Spain or Portugal can cost half of the same loop started in France. Crossing borders is normally fine within Western and Central Europe as long as every country is declared at booking - it is dropping the car in a different country that gets expensive, so plan a loop rather than a one-way where you can. Each country then has its one quirk worth knowing: electronic tolls in Portugal, ZTL camera zones in Italian old towns, motorway vignettes in Czechia and Austria, pricey autoroute tolls in France. Our Portugal and Ireland guides cover the two cheapest markets we've written up in full, and the car rental hub has the rest.
