What is the best month to visit Montreal?

September, if forced to one answer: 21-degree normal highs, the summer machine still humming, the festival crowds gone, and the first Mount Royal colour by month's end - at rates a notch below July. For maximum city, July is the honest pick, with the Jazz Festival spilling into its first days, the comedy festival mid-month and fireworks over the river on Saturdays; you pay peak prices and share the terrasses for it. How cold does Montreal get in winter, really?

Genuinely cold, not picturesquely cold: January normals run minus 5 by day and minus 13.5 overnight, with 52 centimetres of snow falling in that month alone and cold snaps pushing far below the averages. The city is built for it - the RESO underground city links about 33 km of metro, malls and hotels so whole days can happen indoors, and the winter culture from Igloofest to a steaming rooftop pool is real. The equipment rule: proper boots, proper coat, and the cold becomes scenery instead of suffering.

When is Montreal cheapest?

November, and the late-March-to-April thaw window. November is the structural low: fall colour finished, snow culture not yet started, no festivals, and hotel rates at their annual floor - a fine month for the museums, the food neighbourhoods and the underground city. April is the same logic on the other side of winter, with the bonus that late March and April overlap sugar-shack season in the countryside. When is fall colour season in Montreal?

Is Montreal worth visiting in winter?

Yes, with the right expectations and the right coat - it is the most distinctive version of the city. January and February bring Igloofest's snowsuit raves on the Old Port, Nuit Blanche's all-night art crawl in late February, skating, the underground city as a genuine experience rather than a novelty, and the surreal pleasure of the Bonaventure's heated rooftop pool steaming at minus 15. Flights and rooms run far below summer rates. What winter is not: a walking-holiday city in the summer sense - build days around indoor anchors and short outdoor bursts.

The all-night art and performance crawl closing Montreal en Lumiere - the 2027 edition is officially set for Saturday 27 February, with the metro running through the night.
