The Best Hotels in Langkawi, Coast by Coast

The best hotels in Langkawi sit on six different stretches of coast, and the water in front matters more than the star rating. Langkawi Hospital treated 759 jellyfish-sting patients in three years, 590 of them from Pantai Cenang, and only one hotel on this page says it nets its swimming area.

Best all-round: The Datai Langkawi

In Brief

Which hotel should I book in Langkawi?

The Datai Langkawi (€€€€) is the best hotel on the island: a guests-only bay, resident naturalists, and the only hotel here that publishes its jellyfish months. For value, The Frangipani (€€) on Pantai Tengah nets its swimming area against box jellyfish and is 18 minutes from the airport. Do not book Pantai Cenang just to swim.

Key takeaways

  • Best overall: The Datai Langkawi, on Datai Bay, 45 minutes from the airport
  • Best value: The Frangipani on Pantai Tengah, with a netted sea swimming area
  • Pantai Cenang accounted for 590 of the 759 jellyfish-sting patients in Langkawi Hospital's three-year study
  • Foreign guests pay RM 10 per room per night in tourism tax on top of every rate

What the bands mean

Rates are shown as bands, not figures, because almost every hotel here sells through a live booking engine. Only two print a starting price in Malaysian ringgit (MYR, written RM locally). The Datai's FAQ says from MYR 2,500 a night plus a 10% service charge, and Tanjung Rhu Resort's booking panel showed from RM 950 on 3 October 2026. Two costs sit outside any rate. Every guest who is not a Malaysian national or permanent resident pays Malaysia's tourism tax of RM 10 per room per night, collected by the hotel, and Malibest Resort adds a RM 3 per room per night local charge, both in cash at check-in. What you do not pay is service tax: Langkawi is a customs Designated Area, and Customs says services provided inside it are not subject to it.

The 12 hotels, and who each one is wrong for

Walking times are to Langkawi International Airport. These are transfer times, not walks. Every hotel here is a drive from everything else, so the number that separates them is how long the car takes from the island's only airport. Where a hotel publishes its own figure we use it: Casa del Mar 10 minutes, The Frangipani 18, Four Seasons 25 minutes and 20 km, The Datai 45 minutes, and The Ritz-Carlton 10.2 km. Where a hotel publishes nothing, the figure is a road distance routed on OpenStreetMap from the airport, and our research marks it as a road route rather than an operator figure.

    Best all-round

A rainforest resort on a 1.5 km bay reserved for its own guests, with resident naturalists, marine biologists and a nature centre.

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
45 minutes by car to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Anyone who wants a private beach with the rainforest behind it, and dusky langurs and colugos as the evening entertainment.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants to walk out to restaurants. Kuah is a 60-minute drive away.
    The catch
The entry-level Canopy Deluxe rooms are a 15-minute walk or a buggy ride from the beach, and the hotel's own site carries two limousine price lists that disagree: MYR 190 to 390 in its FAQ, MYR 350 to 550 on its getting-here page.

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
25 minutes by car, 20 km to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Couples who want naturalist-led boat trips into the Kilim mangroves and karst straight from the beach.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants to stroll out for street food in the evening. Kuah, the nearest town, is about 30 minutes by car.
    The catch
Jet ski rides are one of the resort's own beach activities, so the water out front is not motor-free.

    Tanjung Rhu

    Tanjung Rhu Resort

    €€€
Rated 4.4 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,777 reviews, as of October 2026

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
About 16.5 km by road to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Families who want a long beach, babysitting and five-person Bayu Family suites without paying the international-brand rates.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants bars on foot. The resort describes itself as away from the crowded beaches and tourist attractions.
    The catch
The Damai suites, 24 of the 74, look onto the central garden courtyard rather than the sea, and they sleep two at most.

    Wrong for
Anyone counting on a free hotel bus. The hotel says plainly that it runs no shuttle.
    The catch
With no shuttle, the hotel's listed option is a third-party car at MYR 200 one way. The minimum check-in age is 18, and spa guests must be 18 too.
  • The lighthouse at Telaga Harbour on Pantai Kok, below the Machinchang range in Langkawi

    Telaga Harbour, Pantai Kok

    The Danna Langkawi

    €€€
Rated 4.8 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,450 reviews, as of October 2026

A colonial-style luxury hotel at Telaga Harbour marina, with refurbished rooms and beach villas that have their own lap pools and beach access.

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
About 11.4 km by road to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Anyone who wants the marina, the cable car side of the island and a villa with a private pool on the sand.
    Wrong for
Anyone who books the cheapest room expecting the sea from the balcony.
    The catch
The hotel itself describes its rooms as having mountain to marina and courtyard to sea views, so a sea view is a category you pay for, and beach access comes with the villas.
  • The Oriental Village at Burau Bay, at the foot of the Langkawi cable car on the west of the island

    Burau Bay

    Berjaya Langkawi Resort

    €€
Rated 4.4 out of 5 on Google Maps from 8,422 reviews, as of October 2026

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
About 13.8 km by road to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Families who want two interconnecting chalets, breakfast and a daily minibar included, and the rainforest outside the door.
    Wrong for
Couples looking for a small, quiet hideaway.
    The catch
It has the island's largest ballroom, seating up to 900, plus eight meeting rooms, so conference and wedding groups are part of the mix.
  • Beach chairs and parasols on the sand at Pantai Cenang, the busiest beach in Langkawi

    Pantai Cenang

    Casa del Mar Langkawi

    €€€
Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,655 reviews, as of October 2026

A 33-room Mediterranean-style beach hotel on Pantai Cenang, with a pool and jacuzzi steps from the sand and a lounge with showers for late flights.

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
10 minutes by car to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Couples who want a small hotel on the island's liveliest beach, ten minutes from the airport.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants a quiet sea. Jet skis and banana boats run off Pantai Cenang, and the hotel books them.
    The catch
Pantai Cenang is where Langkawi Hospital's study recorded 590 of its 759 jellyfish-sting patients, and the free airport transfer applies only to the top suites or to stays of five nights or more.
  • Granite boulders and palms on the sand at Pantai Cenang on the south-west coast of Langkawi

    Pantai Cenang

    Malibest Resort

    €
Rated 3.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 4,967 reviews, as of October 2026

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
About 7.8 km by road to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Budget travellers and families who want to walk from the room onto Cenang Beach. Children under 12 sharing with parents stay free.
    Wrong for
Anyone whose plans might change or who needs to work from the room. Cancellations are non-refundable and Wi-Fi is lobby only.
    The catch
Rates exclude breakfast, and the RM 10 tourism tax and a RM 3 local charge per room per night are paid in cash at check-in, along with a RM 100 cash key deposit.
  • Jet skis off the beach at Pantai Tengah, the bay next to Pantai Cenang in Langkawi

    Pantai Tengah

The Frangipani Langkawi Resort & Spa

    €€
Rated 4.2 out of 5 on Google Maps from 2,033 reviews, as of October 2026
    Best value

A 115-room eco-resort on Pantai Tengah with a netted sea swimming area, a saltwater pool, a children's pool and an indoor kids' corner.

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
18 minutes by car to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Families who want to swim in the sea, not just the pool. The resort nets its swimming area to keep box jellyfish out.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants a sea view from the cheapest room. Deluxe Rooms face the garden.
    The catch
Jet skis are offered from the same beachfront, and Pantai Tengah was the second-worst beach in the hospital study, with 48 sting patients, which is exactly why the net matters.
  • Fishing boats in the bay below the wooded rocks at Pantai Tengah, Langkawi, at dawn

    Pantai Tengah hillside

    Ambong-Ambong Rainforest Retreat

    €€
Rated 4.8 out of 5 on Google Maps from 400 reviews, as of October 2026

Eleven adults-only suites, studios and cottages on a rainforest hilltop above Pantai Tengah, sharing restaurants, a rooftop bar and a spa with the nine-villa Ambong Pool Villas.

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
Same road as The Frangipani, about 18 minutes by car to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Couples who want hornbills and dusky leaf monkeys from the balcony and Pantai Tengah's restaurants within walking distance.
    Wrong for
Families. The retreat is adults only.
    The catch
There is no beach of its own. The sea is a walk down to Pantai Tengah, and the resort sits on a hilltop, so the walk back is uphill.
  • The eagle statue at Eagle Square on the waterfront of Kuah, the main town of Langkawi

    Kuah

The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa

    €€€
Rated 4.5 out of 5 on Google Maps from 3,071 reviews, as of October 2026

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
About 20 km by road to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Families who want a structured kids club, with the ferry jetty, shops and Eagle Square close by.
    Wrong for
Anyone who wants Pantai Cenang's sunset beach on the doorstep.
    The catch
The kids club is charged per child, MYR 300 for a full day and MYR 200 for a half day, and Kuah is the town side of the island, about 20 km by road from the airport.
  • The Kuah waterfront in Langkawi seen from the bay, with the eagle statue beside the jetty buildings

    Kuah

    The St. Regis Langkawi

    €€€€
Rated 4.7 out of 5 on Google Maps from 1,484 reviews, as of October 2026

A butler-service resort on the Kuah side, with six restaurants and bars and four overwater villas that each have a private infinity pool.

    Walk to Langkawi International Airport
About 20.3 km by road to Langkawi International Airport
    Right for
Honeymooners who want an overwater villa with its own pool on a duty-free island.
    Wrong for
Beach-bar hoppers who want Pantai Cenang on foot.
    The catch
Only four villas are overwater, and the hotel's own suggestions for a night out are Kuah's night market and Jetty Point rather than a beach strip.

Where not to book in Langkawi

No part of Langkawi is unsafe to stay in, so the mistakes are about the water and the map. First, do not book Pantai Cenang assuming the sea will be your pool. Langkawi Hospital treated 759 jellyfish-sting patients between 2012 and 2014: 590 from Chenang Beach, 48 from Tengah and 26 from Kok, with most visits in July and from October to December, and 68.1% of them foreigners. Book a hotel with a good pool, or one that nets its swimming area, as The Frangipani does. Second, do not book The Andaman from an old list. Its former owner's annual report says operations ceased after a major fire in 2021 and the land was sold in June 2024. Third, Kuah is a town, not a beach base: the Westin and the St. Regis are about 20 km by road from the airport, and their own suggestions for an evening out are the jetty, the mall and the night market.

When to book

Book around the weather and the water rather than a sale. The hotels split the year almost the same way: The Datai calls November to April dry and May to October wet, while Casa del Mar starts its dry season in October. MetMalaysia adds that the west coast of the peninsula gets its heaviest monthly rain in the two monsoon changeovers, with thunderstorms most frequent from April to May and October to November. The Datai sees more jellyfish from the end of January to February and again in April to May, and the hospital's busiest sting months were July and October to December. March is the one month that misses all of those. If you are arriving by ferry, the two hotels that publish the crossing disagree: The Frangipani gives 45 minutes from Kuala Perlis, Four Seasons 1 hour 15, so plan around the longer one.

Best hotels in Langkawi: FAQ

The questions travellers ask most when picking a hotel here.

Pantai Tengah suits most first visits. It sits next to Pantai Cenang's restaurants without being on the island's busiest beach, The Frangipani puts it about 18 minutes from the airport, and that hotel nets its swimming area against box jellyfish. Choose Datai Bay or Tanjung Rhu on the north coast for a resort holiday on a quieter beach, Pantai Cenang for nightlife on foot, and Kuah for the ferry, the shops and the Westin's kids club.

Avoid the monsoon changeovers if rain worries you, and July and October to December if you mainly want to swim off Pantai Cenang. MetMalaysia says the west coast states get their heaviest monthly rain in the transitions, with thunderstorms most frequent in April to May and October to November. Langkawi Hospital saw most jellyfish-sting patients in July, October, November and December, and The Datai sees more jellyfish in late January to February and April to May.

The Datai Langkawi is the strongest all-round resort: a 1.5 km bay for its own guests, naturalists and marine biologists on staff, from MYR 2,500 plus 10% service. The Ritz-Carlton has the shortest transfer of the big names at 10.2 km, Four Seasons sits on Tanjung Rhu's mile-long beach, and Tanjung Rhu Resort gives you 2.5 km of sand and a 60 m family pool from RM 950.

It depends on what you want, and this page measures only the Langkawi side. Langkawi is a duty-free island, services provided on it carry no service tax, and the hotels here publish transfers of 10 to 45 minutes from a single airport. The trade-off is the water: plan your swimming around the sting months and pick a hotel with a private bay, a netted swimming area or a good pool.

RM 10 per room per night for every guest who is not a Malaysian national or permanent resident. It is Malaysia's national tourism tax, collected by the hotel, and Customs confirms that hotels in duty-free and designated areas such as Langkawi must charge it. Malibest Resort also adds a RM 3 per room per night local charge for all guests and takes both in cash at check-in. No service tax is added inside Langkawi.

Yes. Langkawi Hospital treated 759 jellyfish-sting patients from 2012 to 2014, at least 90 of them with Irukandji or Irukandji-like syndromes, the reaction linked to one group of box jellyfish, and no one died in that period. 590 were stung at Chenang Beach, 48 at Tengah and 26 at Kok. The Frangipani nets its swimming area, and The Datai publishes its own higher-risk months.

The Datai Langkawi, The Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons and The St. Regis are the top tier. The Datai and the Ritz-Carlton each call themselves five-star and have a private beach. Four Seasons has villas with plunge pools on Tanjung Rhu, and the St. Regis has four overwater villas with their own infinity pools. Tanjung Rhu Resort also calls itself a luxury five-star, at a published rate from RM 950.

Yes, and the best two here are small by design. Ambong-Ambong calls its Rainforest Retreat an award-winning, adults-only boutique hilltop resort, with 11 suites and cottages plus 9 pool villas above Pantai Tengah. Casa del Mar has 33 rooms on Pantai Cenang and describes itself as a small and intimate setting. Neither has a big resort's kids club, which is part of the point.

Yes. Malaysia's aviation authority says Langkawi is excluded from customs duties, with no duty on goods brought in apart from rubber, marble, anchovies and petroleum products. The allowance for taking duty-free goods on to the mainland applies after a stay of 48 hours: up to 1 litre of alcohol, 200 cigarettes and gifts or souvenirs from Langkawi worth up to RM 500. Anything above that pays duty on the excess.

Yes. The Andaman, a Langkawi luxury resort, has gone. Its former owner, Landmarks Berhad, says in its 2024 annual report that operations ceased after a major fire in 2021, receivers were appointed in July 2023 and the land was sold in June 2024. Marriott no longer serves a page for it, so treat any hotel list that still recommends it as out of date.

Not far by most island standards. Casa del Mar publishes 10 minutes, The Frangipani 18 and Four Seasons 25 minutes for 20 km. The Ritz-Carlton gives 10.2 km but runs no shuttle, so budget MYR 200 for its listed car. The Datai is the longest at 45 minutes. Kuah's hotels are about 20 km by road, on the opposite coast from the airport.
