A citywide anchor makes no sense in Houston, where the Museum District and the Galleria are ten kilometres apart, so this follows the same method this site used in Dubai: measure to the transport, not to a landmark. Where not to book in Houston
The mistake in Houston is booking the Galleria because the hotels look good and the pictures are nice, then discovering the city is somewhere else. Measured on foot in August 2026, the Post Oak is 9,133 metres from the nearest METRORail station, the Westin Galleria 9,062 and the Houstonian 10,942. Those are two to two and a half hour walks, which means they are not walks. If you book there, hire a car and budget parking at both ends of every trip. The second thing to plan around is the heat, which from June to September is the defining fact of a Houston day. Downtown answers it with a tunnel network of more than six miles under 95 blocks, air conditioned throughout, and the hotels connected to it are meaningfully more comfortable in summer. The tunnels are a weekday system though, so do not build a weekend around them.
When to book
Aim for late October to April, and book around the convention calendar rather than the weather. Houston's summer is genuinely punishing, with heat and humidity that make outdoor plans with children difficult from June through September, and that is also hurricane season. Spring and autumn are pleasant and are when the city's outdoor spaces, Buffalo Bayou Park and Hermann Park, are actually usable. The demand spikes are conventions and the rodeo, which runs for around three weeks from late February and fills downtown hotels completely. If your dates are fixed and downtown is full, the Museum District is the better fallback than the Galleria, because it keeps you on the train line.
