The Best Hotels in Gothenburg, and Who Each One Is Wrong For
Best all-round: Hotel PigalleGothenburg's centre is smaller than almost anyone expects. Seven of the eight hotels on this page are inside a nine minute walk of Kungsportsplatsen and three are inside five, so location barely separates them. What does separate them is breakfast, which in Sweden is usually included and generous, and one awkward fact: the hotel most often called the best in the city is a 25 minute walk from the middle of it.

What the bands mean
No Gothenburg hotel publishes a fixed nightly rate, so the symbols below are relative tiers only, cheapest to dearest. Two things about Swedish pricing make this town easier to budget than most of Europe. Breakfast is normally included rather than bolted on, and it is a proper buffet rather than a pastry, so a rate that looks high often already covers a meal. And there is no separate city tourist tax to add at checkout. Measured in August 2026 on OpenStreetMap foot routing at about 4.3 km/h, from each hotel's own published address to Kungsportsplatsen, the square at the top of Avenyn where the canal, the tram lines and the main shopping streets meet. The numbers are the argument of this page: Avalon is 94 metres away and Upper House is 1,756. Everything else falls between two and nine minutes.
Kungstorget
Avalon Hotel
€€€The closest hotel in the city to Kungsportsplatsen, 94 metres from it, on the corner of Kungstorget above the market hall. It has 101 rooms across six categories and a rooftop terrace with an outdoor pool, which in Gothenburg is a rarity rather than a given.

Drottninggatan

€€Best valueThe value answer, four minutes from the centre on Drottninggatan, and by its own account the oldest hotel in Gothenburg: founded in 1852 as Sundbecks Nya Hotel For Resande. It has 76 individually furnished rooms with air conditioning, and breakfast is included with every stay, served from 06:30 on weekdays for anyone with an early train.

Drottningtorget, the old post office

Where not to book in Gothenburg
Gothenburg has no area a visitor needs to avoid, and the centre is small enough that the usual neighbourhood argument barely applies. What to avoid instead is booking on reputation without checking distance. Upper House is repeatedly called the best hotel in Gothenburg and it is a 1,756 metre walk from Kungsportsplatsen, which is fine if you are at the trade fair next door and a nuisance if you came to wander the old town. The second thing to check is who a hotel will actually take: Dorsia's own site says children are permitted from age 8 onward and that prams are not allowed on the premises, which no booking site puts in front of you. And confirm what your rate includes at Clarion Post, the one hotel here where breakfast depends on the price type rather than being standard.
When to book
Gothenburg fills on events rather than on seasons, so check what is on before you check the weather. The trade fair complex at Korsvagen and the Scandinavium arena sit next to each other, and a large fair or a big concert takes rooms across the whole city, not just the ones nearby. Liseberg's opening season and its Christmas market do the same in a gentler way. Outside those weeks, late spring and the second half of August are the sweet spot, with long light evenings and no summer holiday crush. Deep winter is genuinely cheap and genuinely dark, which is the trade. Whatever the month, book earlier for the small hotels than for the big ones: Royal has 76 rooms and Bellora 97, against 539 at Clarion Post.
