The Best Beaches in Texas

Texas has about 600 km of Gulf coastline, and the honest pitch is this: the water is warm from May to October but usually brown-green from river sediment, not Caribbean blue. These ten beaches are ranked with that reality in mind - including the one place the water actually runs clear.

In Brief

What are the best beaches in Texas?

South Padre Island is the best beach in Texas - the clearest water on the Texas Gulf, real resort infrastructure, and dolphins in the bay. Padre Island National Seashore is the wild alternative (the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world), Port Aransas is the best classic beach town, and Galveston's Stewart Beach is the easiest family day trip from Houston. Everywhere, expect warm water over white-sand postcard looks.

The 10 best beaches, ranked

Ranked on sand and water quality, setting, and how much the beach rewards a full day - with the honest trade-offs stated.

  1. South Padre Island

    Clearest water & resort trip

Rio Grande Valley, southern Gulf Coast

The only Texas beach with genuinely clear, green-blue water - it sits far from the big river mouths and catches cleaner currents from the south. It's also the state's one real resort island: high-rise hotels, dolphin cruises on the Laguna Madre, Sea Turtle Inc.'s rescue centre, and serious kiteboarding on the bay side. Avoid March unless you want spring break at full volume.

Best time: May or September–October: water 26°C+, clear on calm days, and the spring-break and summer crowds are gone.

  2. Padre Island National Seashore

    Wild solitude & sea turtles

south of Corpus Christi, Gulf Coast

The longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world - roughly 100 km of federally protected sand, dunes and Laguna Madre with no buildings at all. Malaquite Beach near the visitor centre is the easy, vehicle-free stretch; in summer the park releases Kemp's ridley sea turtle hatchlings at public events. Drive south down the beach and within minutes you can have a kilometre of Gulf to yourself.

Best time: June–August for turtle hatchling releases; April–May and October for mild days and empty sand.

  3. Port Aransas & Mustang Island

    Beach-town character & fishing

    Mustang Island, Coastal Bend

The best beach town in Texas: a small fishing port reached by a short free ferry, with golf carts on the streets, a long fishing pier, and 29 km of drive-on beach running south through Mustang Island State Park. It has the food, bars and character Galveston's beaches lack, at a smaller scale. Driving and parking on the sand requires an inexpensive local permit sold around town.

Best time: May and September–October: warm water, good fishing, and the summer rental crowds thin out.

  4. Galveston (Stewart Beach & East Beach)

    Easy Houston day trip

    Galveston Island, Upper Gulf Coast

An hour from Houston, which is both the appeal and the trade-off: easy access, big crowds, and the murkiest water on this list thanks to river outflow. Stewart Beach is the family pick - lifeguards, facilities, no alcohol - while East Beach is the party beach with concerts and drinking allowed. The town itself delivers: the historic Strand district, Pleasure Pier, and the 16 km seawall built after the 1900 hurricane.

Best time: May–June or September: warm water and manageable crowds; summer weekends are wall-to-wall.

  5. Rockport Beach

    Toddlers & calm shallow water

    Rockport, Coastal Bend

A bay beach rather than open Gulf - which means calm, shallow, ripple-flat water that's the safest small-kid swimming in Texas, plus it was the state's first Blue Wave certified beach. The town is an artsy fishing village, and in winter the endangered whooping cranes arrive at the nearby Aransas refuge. There's a small day-use fee, and being a bay beach it's short on surf and sand-dune drama.

Best time: May–September for swimming; November–March to pair the beach with whooping-crane season.

  6. Crystal Beach

    Beach houses & low-key weekends

    Bolivar Peninsula, Upper Gulf Coast

The laid-back alternative to Galveston, reached by a free 20-minute ferry ride across the ship channel - dolphins often escort the boat. It's a drive-on beach lined with stilted rental houses, golf carts everywhere, and a fraction of Galveston's crowds. There's no boardwalk and little to do beyond the sand, which is exactly the point.

Best time: May–September: ferry queues are shortest on weekday mornings; summer evenings are the local ritual.

  7. Matagorda Beach

    Solitude, fishing & birding

mouth of the Colorado River, mid-coast

Where mid-coast Texans go to escape the crowds: a long, undeveloped beach at the Colorado River mouth, with a nature park on the river, a jetty for fishing, and some of the best birding on the Gulf. Facilities are minimal and the nearest town is small - bring everything. On summer weekdays you can walk for an hour and see more shorebirds than people.

Best time: April–May and October: mild weather, active fishing, spring and fall bird migrations.

  8. Surfside Beach

    Quiet alternative to Galveston

    near Freeport, Upper Gulf Coast

A tiny beach village about an hour south of Houston that stayed a village: stilt houses, one strip of local seafood joints, drive-on sand and one of the more consistent (if modest) surf breaks on the upper coast. It's the anti-Galveston - fewer facilities, far fewer people. The water is upper-coast murky, so come for the mood, not the clarity.

Best time: May–September for swimming; fall brings the best surf swells and empty sand.

    Hotels near Surfside Beach
  9. North Beach (Corpus Christi)

    Kids & rainy-day backup plans

    Corpus Christi Bay, Coastal Bend

A calm bay beach with the two biggest attractions on the coast directly behind it: the USS Lexington aircraft-carrier museum and the Texas State Aquarium. That combination makes it the best wet-day-plus-beach-day option in Texas, and the gentle bay water suits small kids. It's an urban beach - expect city views, not wilderness, and seaweed some weeks.

Best time: May–September: warm bay water; go on weekdays to have the sand mostly to yourself.

Hotels near North Beach (Corpus Christi)
  10. Boca Chica Beach

    Rockets & end-of-the-road solitude

mouth of the Rio Grande, southern tip of Texas

The strangest beach in America: a free, completely undeveloped strand at the Mexican border that now sits next door to SpaceX's Starbase - you sunbathe under a rocket-launch complex. There are no facilities, no lifeguards and no shops, and Cameron County closes the beach and its only access road for launches and testing, so check the closure schedule before driving out.

Best time: October–April for mild temperatures; any visit depends on the published closure schedule.
