Flights from New York to Miami

New York to Miami is one of the busiest air corridors in the country, which is good news for your wallet: nonstops leave roughly every half hour all day. The price you pay depends almost entirely on when you fly and which of the two Miami-area airports you pick.

In Brief

How long is the flight from New York to Miami and what does it cost?

Nonstop flights from New York (JFK, LGA or EWR) to Miami take about 3 to 3.25 hours. Off-peak one-way fares typically run $60-150 on Delta, American, JetBlue and United, with Spirit and Frontier often lower. Winter holidays and spring break push fares to $250-400 - book those 2-3 months out.

Every way to get from New York to Miami

All three New York airports have nonstops, and two Miami-area airports compete for your arrival. The airline matters less than the airport pair and date:

  • Nonstop to Miami (MIA)

    Our pick

    American, Delta, JetBlue, United

    Duration
    ~3 h – 3 h 15 min
    Typical price
    $60–200 one-way
    Frequency
    20+ nonstops/day across JFK/LGA/EWR

MIA is American's fortress hub - the most schedule depth. Closest airport to Brickell/downtown (~15-20 min) and the cruise port.

  • Nonstop to Fort Lauderdale (FLL)

    JetBlue, Spirit, Delta, United, Frontier

    Duration
    ~3 h
    Typical price
    $40–150 one-way
    Frequency
    15+ nonstops/day

JetBlue and Spirit's South Florida base. Often meaningfully cheaper; ~40-50 min drive to Miami Beach, or take the Brightline train to downtown Miami.

  • Budget carriers (either airport)

    Spirit, Frontier

    Duration
    ~3 h
    Typical price
    $40–120 one-way
    Frequency
    Multiple daily

The headline fare excludes seats and all bags - add $60-120 round-trip if you're not traveling ultralight. Price the full basket before choosing over JetBlue/Delta basic economy.

  • Amtrak (the slow alternative)

    Amtrak Silver Service/Floridian

    Duration
    ~28–31 h
    Typical price
    $120–300+
    Frequency
    1–2 trains/day

An overnight experience trip, not a practical commute. Only worth it if the journey itself is the point (or you want a roomette).

How to book, step by step

  1. Check both MIA and FLL

Search 'New York to Miami' and 'New York to Fort Lauderdale' separately - the $30-80 spread between the two often pays for the ride from FLL to your hotel.

  2. Book 3-6 weeks out (more for peaks)

That's the reliable sweet spot for this corridor. For mid-December to early January, spring break (all of March), and Art Basel week in early December, book 2-3 months ahead.

  3. Pick morning departures in summer

June-September afternoon thunderstorms in South Florida cascade delays through the evening. The 06:00-10:00 departures have by far the best on-time record.

  4. Price the full fare, not the headline

Basic economy on the majors and everything on Spirit/Frontier charges for seats and bags. A $59 fare with a $65 bag each way isn't a $59 fare.

Insider tips

  • The cheapest weeks of the year are typically mid-September to early November - hurricane season's statistical peak, which is exactly why hotels are cheap too.
  • Flying back north is usually 15-25 minutes faster thanks to the jet stream.
  • From MIA, the Metrorail Orange Line runs downtown; from FLL, Brightline connects to downtown Miami in ~35 minutes.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday departures consistently price lowest; Sunday evenings highest.
  • If your dates float even by one day, use the fare calendar - shifting a Friday to a Thursday regularly saves $50+.
